What is wrong with my tree?
« on: August 24, 2023, 10:09:06 PM »
I just got a calamondin from Madison Citrus and was disappointed to find something g wrong with many of its leaves. What is wrong with it and what should I do?

EDIT:: I was wrong, haha. Thanks Millet!

It looks like zinc deficiency to my untrained eye

I just got this email from Madison:My apologies that you were concerned with the tree.  The tree just needs to be fertilized.  After we have so much growth in the greenhouse we cut back on the fertilizer so that the trees slow down in growth otherwise they get too large for the shipping boxes and we have to top them then wait for them to flush out again before we can send them to customers.  Instead of doing heavy pruning we just slow down feeding them.  Just give it some fertilizer and it will green up and be happy / healthy.  We recommend a slow release 13-6-6 or similar or if you want to you can use a water soluble miracle grow during the first few waterings and it will bounce back just fine.
So, do I need to treat with foliar zinc spray?

I'd wait until someone with more experience than I chimes in for concrete advice :)

Take this with a huge grain of salt... My instinct would be to trial a soil fertilizer (if you don't have a foliar option already) and see how it responds - I'd use a water soluble one for the first watering at least and apply a slow release thereafter. But if you have a foliar fertilizer, you could spray that along with a slow release citrus fertilizer to the pot

I have trouble telling between zinc and manganese deficiency (I think zinc deficiency leaves are smaller, and in manganese deficiency the edges of the leaves usually stay green) to be fair  ???

t is a Manganese deficiency. A very common deficiency in citrus.  As Madison suggested, just fertilize the tree with a fertilizer that contains manganese and your tree should be fine
