So, maybe the Sylvia guava grows larger (weight) than any of the Carmine series so it may not be from the same family of guavas.

Peter, do you think I should cut the leaves back severely?  I could even cut it back to that swelling bud just above the roots, if drying out is the main risk.

I think it was cut too early but that it could grow. I’d keep it wet and warm. I’ve seen stuff like that work out.

I do not know the variety. They are seedlings from a good fruit. Not sure how true they grow to seed.

I also have some small Syzygium Jambos which make the yellow fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Flower buds on Loquat not blooming
« Last post by Cablebeach on Today at 10:16:02 PM »
Hi again, I have a Loquat that has been in the ground for 12 months that started producing flower buds about 4 weeks ago, they have not yet bloomed which seems odd to me. Is this normal behaviour for a young plant? The variety on the plant tag is “Enormity” if that is of any value.

From what I recall, the Carmine can be divided into four varieties: Palace Pink, Full Red, Born Red, and Big Leaf Red; with palace pink and full red being the best.

not  “four varieties”,It's five series.

宫粉红 gong fen hong --Palace Pink
全红 quan hong --Full Red
出世红chu shi hong --Born Red
大叶红da ye hong --Big Leaf Red
七月红qi yue hong --July Red

七月红是最多人种植的一个系列( July Reds are one of the most widely grown series.)

“宫粉红”and “全红”不是最好吃的吗?为什么大家喜欢种植七月红呢?

宫粉红只是一个传说中的品种,是否真实存在都未可知,以前果农之中是没有“宫粉红”这个叫法的 。全红个子小、不易坐果,优点是水分足。

fanshiliu, thank you for posting these photos of the Carmine guava. If you can translate in English any of your comments that would be nice.

I have not seen these Carmine guava photos so your pictures are appreciated, thanks.

I think there were a few other TFF members that mention this to me as well. It sure does look very similar to the guava fruit you posted, I'm excited to see this.

The person who has this large tree (height about 17 feet) told me his relative brought the tree from Taiwan. He has 2 trees, his tree and one more at another house.

So far, for me this guava is my favorite of all of the ones I have eaten. Still did not taste the frutis from JF (Frank) pnk/red flesh guava called Delores and Jalisco. My grafted branches of this one is still growing slow and may not get a fruit on it for another year. If anyone else (besides Brad) is growing Frank's guava, please post some photos of it here so I can see what it looks like. I surprised that not many if anyone else has Frank's guava fruiting yet.

抱歉,我以为你是华人,以为你能看得懂中文。Sorry, I thought you were Chinese and thought you could read Chinese.

胭脂红是广东的品种,台湾应该没有,但是也不排除有人从广东把种苗带到台湾去了。Carmine is a Guangdong variety and should not be found in Taiwan, but we can't rule out that someone brought seedlings from Guangdong to Taiwan.

我发的这些图片是别人上传的,我也只是一个刚入门的爱好者。 These pictures I'm posting were uploaded by someone else, and I'm just a hobbyist just getting started.

fanshiliu——就是中文里番石榴的意思  “Fanshiliu”  it means guava in Chinese.

Too late, it's cut.  The roots do look sparse, I'm not sure if it'll survive.  I cut half the leaves off to try to balance it out, as you suggest.  It is now in a container in the greenhouse in half shade.

Think it has a chance to survive?

If not, it isn't a huge deal.  I expect the parent will survive the coming mid-30F lows and if so I have six months or so to try again.  And I have an Inga Spectabilis seedling growing meanwhile.

The medium needs to be kept very wet when establishing layers in pots.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can you bury passionflower trunk?
« Last post by xesoteryc on Today at 09:48:41 PM »
Dont. You will kill the plant like I did with my first vine, on top of not having good enough drainage.
I guess I can try to ease the plants out of the containers and add soil to the bottom or up-pot. Maybe add mulch for the plants that I want to wait until the end of the 2024 season to do that for (mulch should let enough air in not to harm the trunk while keeping the moisture closer to the surface of the soil, encourage roots to make use of the near-surface).

Why would drainage be an issue though?
