Really sad news, I was just reading one of his old threads.

Hello Everyone! Wanted to start a thread showcasing the various rare eugenias and myrciaria many of us are collecting.  Lots of speculation going on, please share your experiences.  Hopefully, some of these actually are as good as they sound.

It is important to remember with all these “new” varieties and species, there could be considerable variability in fruit quality and other characteristics. The 1st mango I tried was not good. Some have been bad, even when eaten at the right time. It is important to not be too quick to judge. With time and selection, who knows how good some of these newcomers may be.

Happy day today, noticed these sprouts of eugenia sp. purple plum (Bellamy) rising up for the equinox.







Seeds always create anxiety for me, and prefer obtaining seedlings, but sometimes that's all that's available and rare seedlings are crazy expensive.  I am sure we have all run up some auctions on each other.

I've been lazu and stingy about fertilizing in the past, but am getting into it lately. Mostly just what's in the potting soil. Sprayed them once or twice with some kelp extract, going to foliar feed more. Probably part of the reason I haven't seen a pineapple fruit in a long time. Time for sun and fert.

Mangoes grow and produce fine in limestone with no amendments. Did nothing for years, and usually got good harvests. Soil ph is 8+ here. Now I fertilize, but not trying to adjust the ph. Never bothered, and wouldn't. Many giant trees in our neighborhood and beyond, no one is tending to them. They usually produce tons of mangoes, and are beautiful trees.

Other trees appreciate or need chealted iron. Mangoes do not appear to need it.

Still waiting on mamey. All other grafted trees I've got from Lara Farms have thrived.

Gotta ripen in opossum dung, perhaps.

Growing 2 of these. Small, won't be fruiting for a while. But wondering, will the heat and humidity affect fruit quality?

Having some bird food around isn't a bad idea. Placed well, you can redirect avian and small beasts away from actual "top flavor" fruit.

I think this is 1 of the 3 original trees. Fruiting at under 4 feet, fruited last year but I got to them too late. Fruit turned orange with a small nipple. Larger than intermedia. Thinking this is g. brasiliensis, what do ya'll think?





...gotta get a better pic, there may be 2 or 3 different garcinia leaves in there.

Sorry, didn't mean to poke fun. Vegans, to me, are the closest we have to saints. It's just that I have tried fruits/vegetables recommended by known vegans and none of those things I was able to stomach (like raw moringa leaves).

Yeah, maybe I'm just stuffing stuff in already occupied pots, but when it appears to workout well for everyone, I consider them "companions." =)

Companion plants in pots helps decrease issues with overwatering, which I am guilty of. it is also nice to have another layer of productivity with potted plants.  Since other stuff is going to grow there anyway, makes sense to choose.

Have played around with different herbs, had some fennel go a little too nuts in one pot. Got a patch of fish mint growing free underneath rollinia tree,. Going to take some and try in pots. Loves the shade here.

I will also grow seedlings of the mother plant in the same pot. Cedar bay cherry, miracle fruit, and loquat sprouts are growing in the mother tree pots. When I eat a fruit, just pop the seed(s) in the pot. Works very well, and can transplant later. Miracle fruit does it on its own.

Moss is another one. Fun to add to bonsais, as well as fruit trees. Can be difficult to keep alive. 

Regular water until just before ripening stage is what is happening here.
