Mystery garcinia
« on: October 23, 2014, 06:54:13 AM »
I was at a mates place this week and he has a big garcinia that has been flowering for years, but no fruit. It has super vibrant red new leaves and pretty distinctive flowers. Does anyone have any clues as to what species it might be?

Very nice tree! Looking at the flowers looks like is a female tree, may need a male pollinator, perhaps he can try grafting another garcinia to some branches or plant another tree close enough....

first guess would be G. macrophylla, then G. madruno...

i think both make male and androgynous flowers on the same plant...maybe this one just hasn't made any androgynous flowers yet?

Adam, your first guess might just be right.

BMC- I think it might be Garcinia Madruno - Charichuelo; only because I grow this one, and the new growth is exactly like the picture. It starts off as a nice dark red, more deep purple-maroon color, before it hardens into the green leaf.  The leaves also look right. Each Leaf ends in this small extended tip, or point. I'll try uploading a pic of the tip so you can see what I'm talking about.

Here are some pics I found researching the plant before I got it, and the male flowers do match up.

Thanks for all the feedback.
He has around 10 garcinia species, including a multi grafted tree a few metres away. It is probably 20ft tall, so maturity shouldn't be a problem. It obviously doesn't cross pollinate with the ones that are flowering nearby. I think he will also graft other types onto this tree soon, as they graft super easy for him.

Do you know what the other garcinias are that he has, especially if they are in production?  Most of the new world garcinias aren't diocious except for g. Magnifolia, foliage looks a little like that.
