Achachairu and Wampi
« on: January 28, 2015, 06:55:22 PM »
I have access to Achachairu (Garcinia sp. often called Garcinia humilis) and superior strains of Wampi (Clausenia lansium). I have both the spicy and large and very sweet varieities of Wampi available. Any interest?

I'll try to take pics before my kids eat them all and post them into the thread in the main discussion board. The cultivars are Guy Sam and Yeem Pay. Not particularly rare in Oz, but by the sounds of it there is a dearth of good wampi material elsewhere. IMHO, The Yeem Pay in particular is right up there with the best of what I would describe as the lemony type fruits, which include the south American garcinia, baccaurea, lansium, etc. Yeem Pay is sweeter than any of these. The main drawback is size, which is small lychee size.

I have a lucky chance dwarfing seedling that is producing beautiful (small) sweet fruit with chicken tongue seeds. It started producing in it's first year and hasn't stopped since 2008. 7yo and below armpit high.

Just a fyi for those that are not aware.  The mentioned c.v. "Guy Sam" is the Cantonese dialect for "chicken heart" wampi.

I'm quite happy with the performance and taste of this chance seedling. The plant itself is dwarfing in size and most of the seeds don't appear to mature, they're like a chicken tongue lychee seed.

JMC, are they the only ones you grow? If grown in isolation they are often seedless or have aborted seed husks.
They look good and quite like my Yeem Pay the first few times it fruited. They were very angular like yours, but more recently the fruit has been much larger and round.

Yes, you are quite right Bruce. I have a Yeem Paye up the back but I don't think it's flowering or fruiting, I'll have to check. Explains the aborted seed kernels. In contrast to another seedling that I cut down, this one fruited very early in it's life and the fruit is very sweet. I've heard that seedling fruit can be quite sour.
