Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: is there a good general tropical soil mix
« on: February 18, 2024, 07:26:43 PM »
Promix soil blends are great.
You can make your also make your  own peat based soil mix 3parts peat 1 part compost/topsoil. Mix in perlite or sand for drainage if needed and also mix in very little bone and blood meal, and worm castings to feed soil. I also use a little vermiculite in my soil mix for the cation exchange capacity boost, it has to do with the ability of soil to move nutrients. However too much vermiculite in the mix has proven to cause significant drainage problems.

No I have not tried the original J31 just the seedling tree growing here, yes the fruit can be opened by hand fresh off the tree however there is latest in the skin that needs a day to drain.

Ive tried sunshine, and other firmer flesh jak, they were a pain to process and the fruit was okay, then I tried homegrown J31 softer flesh jak and it was a win win, being an easy peel with excellent  notes of flavor, I decided to plant 3 more seedlings of J31 as im really interested in this cultivar, I have orange crush jak fruiting for the first time and hoping my neighbors Bangkok lemon puts out fruit soon. To me a jakfruit is of exceptional quality when the fruits are relatively manageable, easy to peel, and full of flavor. The flesh should have some firmness also.
Im always interested to hear about a great Jakfruit.

Currently water temp in the Keys and as far north as tampa bay have given readings of 90’. The seasonal average high temp is 87’ for the keys.

Cutting the tree in half now would be a great idea, the energy in the sap would be diverted into pushing new branches while the initial shock would stimulate vigorous root growth.

I enjoy bananas stir fry in oil, butter n cinnamon, to me Orinoco and Blue java have the best texture for cooking. Out of hand raja puri, pisang ceylan and lakatan very sweet.
