Citrus sinensis 'dolce' or Citrus sinensis 'Vainiglia'

(1/2) > >>

Gansus:
I am looking for another citrus to have on my Balcony here in Germany. I am really interested in the Variantes "Dolce" and "Vainiglia". However I need some help deciding, both are supposed to be very sweet and have almost to no sourness in the fruits. I could find plenty of Sources verifying that for Vainiglia, but when I search for dolce there is practically nothing more than the salespage of Zitronenlust, which is the sales platform recommended for Germany.

Also if you have experience growing these fruits and the taste of them in Zone 8b I would love to get your feedback, thank you so much in advance.

I bought a Vainiglia a few years ago from Tintori nursery near Florence. I was very disappointed to find the oranges produced were not noticeably less acidic than any other orange variety.
So, either the plant was incorrectly labelled, or the Vainiglia only produces its sweet, low-acid fruit in warmer climates than here in England.
I seem to remember posting about this on a citrus forum and one other cool-climate grower had found the same thing.

For a well-balanced flavor, a certain amount of acidity is essential in fruit—perhaps slightly less than in oranges—but the complete absence of acidity makes them taste rather bland; the comparison to sugar water is quite accurate. It’s easy to test whether you like it. :)

Mandarins have a more pronounced sweetness and less noticeable acidity in the fruit.  Maybe this is a better choice?

The nursery Eisenhut also has Dolce Lemon, it is also named in the Citrus book by B.Voss

That is a great idea, maybe that is an option for me. I already have a bunch of different Oranges so that might be a great change. Do you have any recommendations for the variety?

Ah okay that is a little bit disappointing, I have read similar things and thought about supplimenting light in the autmn/Winter, but with that added cost it really wouldn't make sense. Thank you for your answer.
