Citrus General Discussion / Re: compact lemon options
« on: Today at 06:06:06 AM »
Brian, it has been years and I forgot the Lison lemon on my FD was the original variety grafted on FD rootstock. So it hasn't grown much in all these years. I'll take a photo so you can see how much it grew in 30 yrs, not much.

Brian, Millet, ok, I will do an experiment of grafting my Italian lemon, Sumo, Ponkan, on my larger Volkameriana tree so we can test the brix of the mandarin in 2yrs, and I will compare the taste of the grafted lemon with my other trees. I already have a few Valencia orange grafted so it should have fruits next year.

The original variety grafted on this rootstock is the Kiffir line. The fruits of the Kiffir line is not any larger on this rootstock.

Brian, your rootstock is still alive. You should cut off the scion portin completely from the rootstock, it will save the rootstock. I do this to my purchased trees as soon as I see it die off. Then you can still graft on the rootstock in 6 months after it recovers. Or you can just let the rootstock grow out and see what it was before you graft over it.

I like pineapples but I can't really taste anything unique of different pineapples. There may be one members who grow them like Brad that can detect differences in tastes/flavor.

You can name it what you want, just make sure there isn't one already named the same.

Yes, I try to eat it every time I go to Hawaii. Flesh is white, fruit is small like a perfect sphere, 12 lb shot put ball. Taste is super sweet. But now a days, some of the other sweet varieties may be as good tasting. Fruit is very small compared to normal pineapples.

Pau is a good seller. I have his variety grafted on my tree. The small fruit variety is doing well, but the larger fruit may have failed so I may need to buy a few more cuttings.

Greenerpasteur, nice job digging up the tree. I'm surprised it didn't have much smaller/finer roots. Looks like that tree had a long fat tap root. Guava trees must be strong to recover with so little roots.

I did something similar when I dug up a 45 yr old Meyer lemon tree, but I had no choice since the tree was planted next to a block wall and had a concrete border on the other side 3 ft away. Most of the large roots of the tree was under the wall or concrete so i ended up cutting them off and what was left on the tree looked like your guava tree.

Ok, for those of you that I message saying you are on the Advance Sale List, you can start making the payments to my Paypal.

I am ready to ship out at half (5) of the orders now. The rest I will need to get more fresh cuttings in next week and send you message.

Marta posted in one of the other forums that her website has many cuttings (140) available starting 3/1/24.

Here's the website link below:

https://reallygoodplants.com/

She has good cuttings which are hard to find so they sell out very fast. I suggest you place your order now.

I just order a few more items I wanted to graft. Her price is reasonable, cuttings are fresh and she knows what she is doing so you should be getting the correct variety listed.

She is selling a few yangmei cuttings, hard to find mulberry like Skinner, Taiwan Long, Himalayan Steve Murray.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: The Fig Hunter
« on: March 01, 2024, 07:22:47 PM »
I attended one of the Fig Hunter exchange/presentation in Long Beach area last year. I was hoping it would be like the CRFG exchange, but it wasn't as mentioned above. More of a sales pitch and some decent presentation. He did give away a few free figs, but I don't know if they were average seedlings figs he found. I did take a few. They were also selling his other figs as mentioned. I don't think David(TFH) is a con, just trying to make sales.

I doubt that I will go to it again. I was surprised how many CRFG members were in attendance, over 50, I could have done better on my own buying on FigBid.

I have most of the rare good tasting figs so don't need to attend it any longer.

Jeremy, ok, thanks. I think this tree must be the same variety. All you fruits resembles what I have seen on this tree. The flavor description also matches how I rate it and tastes very good. Probably the best tasting for the non-crunchy variety. The only variety that might tastes as good or better may be JF (Frank's) Delores or Jalisco. I haven't tasted fruits of JF's fruits yet but Brad says it is very good so it might be as good or better than this one.

I'm definitely going to be grafting and air-layering this one for my collection. If anyone asks, no I'm not selling any air-layers, just for my personal collection.

Your cocktail grapefruits look very nice. Kinda reminds me of the Golden grapefruit. Have you tasted that one, not bad tasted. I like it because the Golden grapefruit has a neat flesh color.

Jeremy, you fruit photo looks much more like the Betty. The flesh is white and if you let if fully ripen until it gets a little soft, then it will look like the same flesh as your photo.

I prefer the fruit & flesh to on the firm side so I like to eat it before it gets to soft. I read someone's link on the Carmine and the weight of the fruit is lighter than the Betty fruit. Like about 20 grams less in weight.

The first one is a sumo. Sometimes the fruits don't always turn dark yellow/orange. You will know it when you pick and eat it. Sumo should be seedless with fruit sack similar to an orange (large for a mandarin). I also have both it's parent trees which fruits and the Ponkan is the better tasting of the parent tree.

I think most of my Meiwa trees I purchased are grafted on Flying Dragon, that is why they grow so slow. Even after 4-5 years, the tree is not even 3 ft tall. I'm cutting the branches and grafting them to my large FD tree and my large Macrophylla tree so I should know which one works best. So far, I say it's the Macrophylla rootstock tree.

Looks like the Advance Wait list has one last spot so I will close this offer today.

When I go back and take the cuttings again in another week, I will send each person on my list a message and when I will start sending out the 2 cuttings as mentioned above. For those of you in CA, I may be able to ship in a slightly larger box for the same cost with some leaves on the cuttings. For everyone else outside of CA, don't expect any leaves on the cuttings.

If you have any questions on your order, just send me a message and not posted them here.
Thanks.
