Golden Annona - big disappointment
« on: August 04, 2023, 05:51:01 PM »
Hello to all tropical fruit enthusiasts. I got my 2 first fruits on a small tree I bought by mail 2 years ago. I've heard it is a relative of Sugar Apple (and I love Sugar apple) so I expected something similar but alas...Smell is not strong but pleasant, like cantaloupe with hint of pineapple. A lot of seeds inside so not much to eat. And the taste...is better described as "tasteless". Really. Raw potato? No sweetness at all. A bit of sour maybe, not much. Not sure I can even eat these 2 fruits. Maybe interesting to grow as exotic but I have a small yard and want to grow fruits I eat. Disappointed.

What you regretfully have there is a pond apple I believe, annona glabra. I saw a video on youtube of someone advertising golden annona, and it was nothing more than a pond apple. The leaves and fruit are definitely what they look like.

On a positive note, you now have a favorable root stock that can be grafted on to with choice sugar apple (annona squamosa), or most any other annona.

Agree with Madfarm.  I'm no expert on annonas but my first thought was that it looks like pond apple.

Look on the forum for Pond Apple, they smell wonderful but have no taste.  And that is being kind.

By the way not everything grafts well to pond apple.  There is a annona graft compatibility table floating around on the forum.  In my experience, Cherilata does well on pond apple.  Some say Ilama does to but not in my experience.

Yes this is correct, and variety of pond apple matters too.
There a lot of delayed incompatibility also.

Zhpp grafted reticulata to and I haven't seen a single sucker in the 3 years I've had it planted.

In this case I don't think it will matter but the first annona fruits can be
misleading. My Lisa Atemoya were very bland the first year and also my
Isan Indigo sugar apple. The second year both rocked!
I believe those golden annonas come from Top Tropicals?
I had a friend that really wanted some of the seeds from them even after
I told them about the reputation. I live about 20 minutes away and called them
and arranged to pick them up. When their employee walked out with the seeds he
told me they were nothing special?
