Those who ordered and got them, I am sure you are getting good takes??

I don't consider myself an expert grafter as this is probably like my 5th or 6th time ever doing it but....So far so good Behl! Thanks again for the scions and buddy tape!

I’ve used both. I can’t tell the difference. I feel like Bioflora has gotta have something in there that’s good because my dogs love Bioflora...little bastards love to eat it. So I keep buying Bioflora.

I bought a GEM on a salt tolerant and possibly on a clonal rootstock. It was tiny for my taste but was the last one left at sub tropica. I transplanted it in a 15 gallon after bringing it home. It is full of flowers. Is it a good idea to pinch off the flowers now, or wait till it forms fruits and pinch off the fruits?

Why not just put it in the ground?

It’s like a baby hurricane without the rain. Had to go tie up one of my young Manila mangos that got loose from its stake and bent all the way to the floor.

Debating if I should make that investment for the IV organics vs the white latex paint...iv organics is pricey.

Hi Alan,

How often do you do foliar feed on your GEM?  Do you feed it when the flowers are blooming?

-James

I do it maybe 2-4 times a month on all my young/small trees and yes I have done it during flower bloom.

Latex paint alone does very little for me.  I have been planning to do several test:
The 3-1 product.
Latex paint with Kaolin (Surround)
LAtex Paint with Ceramic Paint Additive several products out there

Any updates to your testing?

I finally planted my sir prize from clausen in San Diego two weeks ago after buying it in January.  The tree has been doing well.  The guy Ray at Clausen told me not to fertilize the tree for a couple months.  There is a foliar feeding formula using seaweed extract, fish emulsion, and sugar to get the tree to grow.  Is it safe to do foliar feeding on this tree?

I sprayed that (fish/molasses/seaweed) to my GEM and it went from 2 feet to 6 feet in a couple of months. Kind of backfired since the growth looks a little funky now. Looks like a tall skinny kid with no muscle. BUT yes it made the tree grow faster if that is your goal.

Pictures are from July 2018 and October 2018. So 3 months of growth.

Reed avocado tree has become a beast at 12'H X 8' wide, coming back from a frozen stump in March 2018. 3 thick trunks, just beginning to flower. Love the big, red new leaves. Gorgeous tree.  "Naked" cocktail cherimoya tree in the foreground, 3 varieties were from Behl, all took.  Side veneer and cleft.

Nice size Ardith I grafted Sept. 2018 on the left, giant Atis sugar apple, newly plucked skeleton, Reed in the back.

Second Pinkerton graft to push, this one at a permanent installation.  Still waiting on another side veneer graft to push on this Bacon seedling rootstock.

My Reed looks like that and it took it 4 years in ground to get that size. Pretty crazy growth...do you give it anything special?  Ive heard foliar feeding with Molasses, fish fertilizer, and seaweed makes trees grow fast.

Thanks Mark in Texas. Yea I was a bit hesitant of doing it at first. Only time will tell. Ill keep them pruned to a small size though which should help. I am from Houston so I know what you mean about those Oak trees. My parents have a Pecan tree that's huge maybe 100 feet tall, I wont let these avocados get that big!

Thank z_willus_d...I figure I make use of the baby side yard since I never walk thru there anyways.

An update on Sir Prize and Lamb Hass. Sir Prize is flowering a lot (Sir Prize pics are from March 09) compared to all the foliage that lamb hass is putting out and not so many flowers (picture of lamb hass from a couple of days ago) ... The Queen in the middle died due to sunburns. I’m trying to tie down the branches up against the trellis...we will see how that works out though.

I am not too sure. I always thought all avocados flowered around spring time.

I have Frederick and Ruby...and ruby has never fruited. Ruby does give off a lot of flowers though. It must be pollinating with something else you have.

My Sharwil is in the beginning stages of flowering

Nice!

Ribbit (sharwil fruit on the left)

Very nice!
I have a lizard friend that lives on my Reed tree. Not too sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Found my answer.

Sounds like I should wait for average temps to be over 65 to pinch off.

I have a tree or 2 starting to bloom.  Its cold weather making it bloom.

What do you do with these fall blooms? Do you eventually cut them off? I had another Manila seedling flower around April/May of this year and produced mangos which I thought it was normal, but these are a little weird going into winter.

It appears that I have one branch from the whole tree flowering...seems kinda weird. I stopped fertilizing September 15. It is one of those Manila Seedlings from Home Depot. I am going to assume this has happened before to other people and would possibly know what is going on here.

Thanks Warren for an awesome presentation which was very informational. That evening I was a bit starstruck from seeing so many familiar faces that I've seen on YouTube (especially the guy from the ''Let's Find Out'' show)...really enjoyed it. Thanks again Warren.

The usual recommendation is horticultural oil or soap spray.  I don't know about the scent additives but I can't imagine they would hurt.  I use Dr Bronners unscented baby soap which has no detergents.  It's kind of expensive so if anybody knows a cheaper solution let me know.

I have been fighting a cottony cushion scale infestation for *years* now.  Soap spray keeps them in check but they keep coming back.  Like you, I live in a temperate area where CCS isn't native and have not brought any new trees in for a while I know that I simply haven't eradicated them all from my trees.   I am going to switch to hort oil in the fall when it cools off a bit.

My biggest issue has been that it takes forever to spray using a 3-gal pump sprayer.  It takes me an hour and a half to coat all my trees.  I tried two different hose-end sprayers and they were complete junk.  However, you can find horticultural oil bottles with built-in hose-end sprayers (Bonide brand I think, maybe Bayer).  I read somewhere these built in sprayers are far superior to the re-useable sprayers.  I am going to try this, and if it works well see if I can modify the single-use sprayer to be re-useable.

here's the link about the sprayers:  http://lawniac.com/battle-hose-end-sprayers-chapin-g362d-vs-ortho-dial-n-spray

Would this Dr. Bronners soap work as well? Its at Costco right now
