Pruning Mamey Sapote
« on: August 15, 2024, 10:38:53 AM »
This is my Mamey, approx 8+ feet tall. Should I remove the lower lombs?  I am in Highlands County.

That is a nice-looking tree, what variety is it?

You don't need to cut any branches, I would wait until you get your first fruit, then trim accordingly to the final shape you would like to keep it.

Not sure, where you learned this technique to not prune until producing fruit. Sounds like you would fit in on Big Island Hawaii where they grow 80ft avocado and jack fruit central leader trees to host their PDC classes.

Additionally, just by looking at your location there's a 99% chance you are not growing Mamey successfully.

I like the low branching on your tree, it looks great to me. If anything, I would trim back the very top and aim for more lateral growth and branching.

I am not an expert on Mamey Sapote trees though, and with the amount of time they take to bear fruit, any trimming should be carefully considered.

Leave the lower branches. Cut the highest branches back, opening so light reaches the lower branches.  You want access to the fruits for careful, selective harvest.

Thanks everyone, I'll trim the top and leave the bottom branches.  I don't remember what variety it is.  Although it flowers profusely, it has never fruited.

I would agree with this. Definately remove the top, to encourage lateral growths. This will result in a shorter tree with lower fruits.

Your tree is looking beautiful. You should easily pull Mamey Sapote, but it might take a bit longer to fruit. And I would advise you protect the tree hand if a bad frost is on the way.

Good luck, and prune carefully.
