Citrus General Discussion / Wikipedia post on Key Lime
« on: April 26, 2025, 12:56:56 PM »
The wikipedia post for Key Lime sayd "The key lime is not to be confused with West Indian lime, bartender's lime, Omani lime, or Mexican lime which are slightly different."

Is that correct?

Does anyone have a pic of the label for the 0-3-22 fertilizer that Truly Tropicals and the Palm Beach Rare Fruit Council sells?

They are out of stock so I'm looking to see if I can find anything similar online.

I bought a Dole Tropical Gold pineapple yesterday and I have been trying to figure out whether it's an MG-03, MD-2, or some other cultivar.

Anyone know?

In the plant patent application for Dole-14, it said that Tropical Gold is MG-03. https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP20885P3/en

"The breed 'Mayan Gold 03' or 'MG-03' was derived from crossing the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii hybrid clones 58-1184 and 59-443. Mayan Gold 03, known as Tropical Gold, is a popular commercial variety that is recognized as yellow and golden bark and flesh color when matured."

This document is syaing that MD2 and MG-03 are the same: https://www.horticulture.com.au/globalassets/hort-innovation/historic-reports/study-tour-to-singapore-and-malaysia-incorporating-the-7th-international-pineapple-symposium-pi10001.pdf

This website is saying that the MD-2 and MD-1 are crosses between the 58-1184 and 59-443. So is the MG-03 the same cross as well, or is it another name for the MD2? https://www.chfusa.com/pineapples_md2.htm

Are cherimoya fruit in season still? If so, is anyone interested in trading a box of cherimoya fruit for a box of Florida mangos?

Mangos will be ready in the next month or two, so I’ll ship once they’re available.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potting Soil for Pineapples
« on: March 15, 2025, 07:25:49 PM »
I've been watching a lot of Gary Matsuoka's videos (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfqxrNDhwJjXYSG8s4QDaFQ) on youtube recently.

He has a lot of videos about why the potting mix we use is not good for most plants long term.

Therefore, I am trying to recreate a better mix for my pineapples that can last multiple years.

Here is the mix I am thinking about making based on what I've learned from his videos:
35% Peat Moss (7 parts)
45% Pumice (9 parts)
15% Decomposed Granite (3 parts)
5% Horticultural Charcoal (1 part)

I am thinking about also adding the following fertilizers and amendments:

Miracle-Gro Citrus, Avocado, & Mango Food - 1/2 tbsp per gallon
Gypsum - 1/2 tbsp per gallon

What do you all think about this mix? I am also thinking about keeping them all in only 2 gallon containers because the root systems seem to be relatively small and I foliar feed often.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB decomposed granite and pumice
« on: March 13, 2025, 01:51:56 PM »
I can't find a reasonably priced source for decomposed granite and pumice in South Florida.

Does anyone know where that sells it?

I am trying to make my own potting soil mix.

Good morning forum members,

We want to bring an important matter to your attention regarding recent reports of possible scam attempts on our forum. Some members have reported receiving private messages from a user with the username jeffbrand, who appears to be instructing them to email someone off the forum to purchase seeds. We have since deleted this members account.

Please be advised that these messages may not be legitimate. The email addresses associated with this person appear to be flagged as potential scams according to Google. It appears that the intention is to lure members into off-forum communication for transactions that may carry increased risk.

Recommendations to potentially avoid these issues:

  • Do not respond to or engage with unsolicited private messages requesting you to email a third-party.
  • Report any suspicious messages or accounts to forum moderators immediately.
  • Conduct all transactions through trusted and verified sources.
  • Be cautious when dealing with new members who have no posting history, as scammers often create fresh accounts to target users.
  • When making purchases, consider using payment methods that offer buyer protection, such as PayPal Goods & Services, which may allow you to dispute a transaction if necessary.

All transactions, whether conducted on or off the forum, are at the members' own risk. The forum and its administrators cannot take responsibility for any loss or fraudulent activity that may occur.

Thank you for your vigilance and cooperation in keeping our forum a safe and trustworthy space for all.

I have a few yellow soursop trees that I grew from seed, now about 5-6 feet tall in 7-gallon pots.

I'm giving them away only to forum members who will plant them in the ground and post updates once they fruit.

If you're interested and live in an area where soursops can survive outdoors without cold protection, let me know.

Who gets the trees won't be based on how quickly you reply, but rather on the factors above and whether I believe you'll take good care of the tree.

Local pickup only, but I don’t mind holding onto them for a few weeks or months if you won’t be in the area for a while.

I’ll post some pictures of the trees later this week.

I saw a bunch cambuca trees at Excalibur today from 7 gallons to 25 gallons.

I went to Excalibur today and I saw they had a variegated variety of pineapple named ‘Juicy’.

Has anyone tried the fruit from it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple propagation from pineapple roots

I saw this video on youtube today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQtisY4w-YI&ab_channel=Year1Organics

I haven't seen this method before. The guy in the video cut the root into discs and the new plants grew from the disc.

Anyone else try this method before?

It may be a good way to get more plants from the less common varieties.
