Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Keledang Ever!!!
« on: May 14, 2017, 11:00:24 AM »
Hi,
This year my tree did not make flowers...it seems to be on a downward spiral.  I think the tree is going to die.  Maybe neighbor trees are too close?  Not getting enough sun?

Micah.  Any updates on this one?  I'm about to plant two keledang seedlings in my yard (from you and Chris).  Wondering how yours turned out and any advice I might need

Watch out for bees and other bugs if you have them there.
No worries I hum as I go in for flower. :)
I worry about slugs a bit more

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is my tongue a good pollinator?
« on: March 15, 2017, 12:01:11 PM »
Haha
Making out with flowers! :o
It feels pretty natural to do...a couple of swirly motions of the tongue and I got my little sugar pollen boost along with maybe more fruit set. Maybe my DNA tells flower what I need in fruit.
Achachairu flowers are sweet...not like they need help with pollination.
Has anyone else ever experienced? Make me feel like a big bee or bat maybe...or a weird perv
I imagine with a big mustache and beard you would be the ultimate flower kisser/pollen holder...isn't  that what Hairs on pollinators are for?
Any thoughts?

We've got a few young ones in the ground. It'll be a couple more years I hope.

Nice photos!
Is the skin eaten too?
Would this campomanesia fruit in a pot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: growing cherapu in pots
« on: February 11, 2017, 10:07:59 AM »
I would imagine that they could flower in a 15gal. Pot.  You are going to need more than one flowering to get fruit.  I have two groups of four each.  There's only one female in one group and two in the other.  The other project I know of here with cherapu in production also has experienced a lot of male seedlings.
Peter
I have same experience with more males than female plants.
Like mangosteen you can get cherapu to fruit in a pot. But ti's much easier when in the ground, especially if you want to get good quantities of fruits.

argh. i'm running up against space constraints.  but will keep this in mind.  :(

Look like I got lucky.  trees 1 male and 3 female.  The taller one from the start became the male.  Not sure if it just happened to be taller or it could be a trait? Like herb plants...I've heard

No my brethren.  When I bought my plants they where about 2-3 tall in 1-2ft deep grow bag.  They were very healthy...maybe they would have set flowers.  They were planted in Earth and three years later set fruit.
I bet if yours are looking nice and healthy it will fruit in a big pot.

Hi evilfruit
Congratulations! Any secret to your success?
Where did you get your seed from?
Please update on growth

Sorry for bringing up this old topic.

I bought 5 seeds and managed to germinate all of them. They started to grow a long taproot but, still no sign of life above the soil.

My question is , how long it will take for platonia insignis seedling to emerge from the soil ?.

Aloha Lance
The graveolens from you made it..because I learned from an earlier rat attack to protect em.
A little while ago friend sent me some thick fleshed tasty graveolens seed..sadly they all got swiped.
Live and learn!
Of course those I'ole love durian seed especially the stinky relatives.  Durio graveolens didn't last long in the nursery.
With rare seed nowadays I flip another planting tray on top of the planted seed tray and weight it down with something heavy like a few rocks.

the graveolens didn't make it!?!?!! s wah.  that sucks.

Here's a seedling of a fruit we got at the farmers market we planted.

Wish I had a nice pic of the inside.
It's crunchy and extra big lobes. Lots of jackfruit juice dripping out of it when cut open
It does have some latex but well worth it for eating..over a day or two cause it's so big.
The last one we ate was 48 pounds..a record holder for me.  One more on tree this season.
Wanna trade?

Aloha
Sechium ticaco it is. Thanks

For the papaya relative ...in my opinion it has only kind of a gummy bear texture when you pop the glob into mouth.  More slimy than firm. The seed like papaya are bigger and spicy , swallowed not bitten.  The pulp is tasty slight sweetfruity. Fruit fall off tree when ripe
