Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Am I over watering my pineapples?
« on: June 08, 2014, 05:44:21 PM »
I grow a lot of pineapples.  Pineapples like fast draining soils, with good aeration.  Over watering, especially if the soil tends to hold water is a real killer.  When a pineapple slip is taken from the mother plant it should lay on a dry surface in the air for a week to callus before being planted, or the chance of rotting is high.   NOTE:  A slip taken from it mother plant can lay on a dry surface in open air for weeks, even months, and when planted it will still live and grow - Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: High Density Home Orchard
« on: June 08, 2014, 11:13:17 AM »
I don't know why I did not think of this earlier, but some years back I purchased a second house that the previous owner had planted two plum trees in the same hole.  One tree was a purple leafed tree, and the other a green leaf tree. They are now full grown plum trees, each growing into a half circle.  Between the two trees they make one complete circle.   They both have grown to the same height and spread, and seem to be healthy trees and produce fruit .  Maybe two citrus trees varieties with the same growth characteristics  would do the same. - Millet

Yorgos, in citrus, each variety has its own rate of growth, and eventual size of tree.  For high density planting you might try to match varieties that possess approximately the same rate of growth, and about the same eventual size.  Example: in your 4 X 6-ft bed you could plant 4 different mandarins or satsumas, or you might plant a kumquat, a satsuma and a couple mandarins, all growing on Flying Dragon rootstocks. These 4 citrus varieties are all slow growing smaller sized trees.    Growing trees such as a grapefruit, and a Page mandarin close to each other, the grapefruit would rapidly over grow  the Page mandarin eventually causing the page to die out, or become greatly under productive.   Personally I have never seen trees planted as close as your trees are. Your high density project is highly interesting, please keep us advised how your orchard is doing, and how each tree is affecting its closest neighbor. Harvest information on each variety would also be very interesting.  . Thanks Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Grapefruit and Medicne Interaction
« on: June 07, 2014, 11:50:43 AM »
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The quest to develop a grapefruit hybrid that will not interact with medication has taken a step forward, as researchers pinpoint compounds most responsible for the problem, a University of Florida citrus breeder says.

Scientists have been aware of the so-called “grapefruit juice effect” since 1989. Compounds in the fruit called furanocoumarins inhibit the action of an enzyme that breaks down certain medications in the human digestive system.

The phenomenon poses a health risk because it can produce unexpectedly high levels of these medications in a patient’s bloodstream. Doctors, pharmacists and prescription drug labels warn patients to avoid grapefruit and related products under these circumstances.

The phenomenon is a disappointment for fans of the tart treat, but Fred Gmitter, a faculty member at UF’s Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred, is part of a team working to address the problem by developing a hybrid between grapefruit and selected varieties of pummelo that have been shown to have low furanocoumarin content and can transmit the trait to their offspring.

In the current study, researchers investigated the effects of furanocoumarin compounds, testing each one to determine the amount required to slow the enzyme reaction by 50 percent. The results showed that a handful of furanocoumarins had the strongest effect.

More importantly, juice samples from 40 different hybrids and their parents were tested directly for their overall effect on enzyme activity, and one of the selected hybrids approved for impending release, known as UF 914, was among the samples with the lowest effect.

Gmitter said further study is needed to learn how low furanocoumarin levels must be to reduce the interaction risk.

Other members of the research team included David Greenblatt, Yanli Zhao, Michael Hanley and Jerold Harmatz of Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center in Boston; Chunxian Chen of the Lake Alfred center and Paul Cancalon of the Florida Department of Citrus in Lake Alfred. - Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: meyer lemon Improved or not ?
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:06:36 AM »
As Mike wrote above, the improved Meyer lemon is a virus free form of the original Meyer lemon.  In the 1940's the original Meyer lemons were found to be a carrier of the tristeza virus.  As a carrier of the fatal virus, it passed the virus to other citrus varieties, but never shown any of the symptoms itself.  The propagation and sale of the original Meyer lemon was banned 20 or 30 years ago.  Luckily in the early 50's a virus free tree was found by none other than Don Dillon, the founder of the Four Winds Growers dwarf citrus company, a very popular California dwarf citrus tree propagator and supplier. I have purchased many excellent quality citrus tree from them.  After Don's tree was certified by the University of California to be indeed free of tristeza, it was release for propagation and sale to the general public.  The Improved Meyer lemon has mostly been grown only as a back yard tree, and never as a commercial tree, as its fruit does not holdup well under long distance shipping. We owe word of thanks to Don Dillon for all the Improved Meyer lemons we are able to enjoy today. - Millet

Robby, since Xie Shan is a Satsuma I would just grow the tree from seed on its own roots. A well grown Satsuma should produce fruit in 3 to 5 years, even some what faster if the tree was lighted and root heated during the winter. - Milleet- Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Xie Shan Satsuma Trees

Robby, yes Xie Shan Grows true from seed.  I realize that Arizona, along with all of the other citrus growing states, do not allow citrus trees to be shipped into their states. The reason for this is to protect the citrus industry in those states from imported citrus diseases. Currently Florida citrus nurseries are now being allowed once again, to ship their trees intrastate. The reason for this change in the government's policy, is because before a tree leaves Florida for another state, the tree is inspected by a USDA agent, and is certified  to be free of all diseases. The USDA certifies that the trees have a clean bill of health.  These trees are therefore not  a threat, nor present any danger to the citrus industries operating in Arizona, California, Florida,Texas, or any other citrus producing region.  An exception should be given for these USDA certified trees, and citizens living in the citrus growing states should be allowed to purchase the trees from Florida nurseries, and be able to have them shipped to their destination. - Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Gibberillic Acid (GA3)
« on: June 04, 2014, 10:28:43 PM »
Other uses for gibberellins (GA3)
1. GA3 spray has been shown to stimulate bud break and vegetative shoot growth.
2. GA3 spray can inhibit flowering in citrus if applied prior to the irreversible commitment to flowering.
3. GA3 spray prevents senescence, and keeps citrus fruit green longer if sprayed prior to color break to delay rind senescence of the fruit in late harvested orchards, and when fruit is to be left hanging for an extended period .   So reliable are the annual economic benefits derived from gibbing citrus fruit for late harvest, it has become a standard horticultural practice in most citrus producing countries of the world.
4. GA3 promotes seed germination..
5. When the gibberellin concentration is lower than the ABA concentration, the tree becomes dormant;, when the gibberellin concentration is greater than the ABA concentration, dormancy is overcome and growth resumes.
6. GA3 promotes shoot elongation, by causing cell division in the cells of the node and also causing these cells to elongate, resulting in elongation of the internode, and elongation of the shoot.
7. GA3 promotes fruit set.
8. GA3 promotes leaf expansion.
9. GA3 is pH dependent. High alkaline solutions causes decomposition, and loss of activity of GA3.  A pH lower than 4 also causes decomposition.   At pH 4  the uptake of the chemical is three fold greater that at pH 7.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Want A Citrus Tree In A Cold Yard?
« on: June 04, 2014, 09:19:55 PM »
Yuzu is an ancient cultivar going back thousands of years in China. The British plant hunter Frank Meyer, famous for discovering the Meyer Lemon, which is named for him, also discovered the hardy Yuzu in  Hsi-Chi village in northwestern China in 1914.  Yuzu is a cross between Citrus ichangensis x C. reticulata, thus it is a ichandarin.   The yuzu does not resemble either parent which is quite unusual. The tree is medium sized, narrow upright, and quite cold hardy.  The most notable characteristic of Yuzu is it pungent aroma.   Yuzu fruit are normally harvested in autumn while still green, although the fruit eventually turns a dark yellow color, and when dried is commonly used as a spice.  The peel is edible, and the albedo (the white inner portion of the peel) is distinctly sweet, much like a kumquat.  It is used in Japan like a lemon, and as an aroma ingredient in hot baths.   When fully dormant it can tolerate temperatures as low as 10F and perhaps lower when fully dormant.  Like many Citrus ichangensis hybrids, it can go deciduous during cold spells with no loss to fruiting wood. -Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Amazing Health Benefits Of The Pummelo
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:14:18 PM »
Pummelo Benefits:

The benefits of pummelo fruit are listed below.

1. Prevents Urinary Tract Infection:
Urinary Tract infection is a bacterial infection that affects the urinary system that creates stores and removes urine. Increased consumption of pummelo juice helps to fight this particular frequent swelling in pregnant women. The Vitamin C present in pummelo increases the acid level in urine and shirks the development of bacteria in the urinary tract.

2. Promotes healing:
Wound recovery practice suggests recovering strength of wounded tissue by replacing the dead tissue with a healthy tissue. Enzyme in Vitamin C helps in the development of Collagen, a protein that fortifies skin making it skin flexible and initiating wound recovery.

3. Healthy gums:
Bleeding and loose gums might be a symbol of Vitamin C deficiency. Collagen development is not just essential for skin, but also essential for creating healthy and balanced gums and teeth. Pummelo helps to make the gums stronger and keeps teeth problems at bay.

4. Heart health:
Pummelo has a high content of potassium, which like Vitamin C plays an important role in supporting the heart. This essential mineral regulates blood pressure levels. Abundant in pectin, pummelo juice clears the arterial deposits accumulated in the body, thereby reducing the impurities and benefiting people with hypertension. Pummelo also reduces the cholesterol count in the body and promotes good cholesterol.

5. Prevents anemia:
Research has shown that Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron in body. Iron deficiency often leads to anaemia i.e. shortage of blood in body. Having a diet rich in Vitamin C helps to combat iron loss and improves blood circulation.

6. Wards off cold and flu:
Eating fresh pummelo fruit or drinking pummelo juice, can help prevent toxins and free radical cells from building up in the body. Too many free radicals in the body can cause health conditions like cold, flu, asthma, bacterial infection, allergies and so on. Vitamin C is one of the nutrients which stimulates the action of antibodies and immune cells which guard the body against bacteria that cause cold and flu.

7. Fights cancer:
The skin of pummelo is very rich in bioflavonoids which fights cancer and helps to reduce pancreatic, intestinal and breast cancer. It also stops cancer from spreading by enabling the body to eliminate excess oestrogen. Fiber, present in pummelo protects from colon cancer.

8. Fights Anti ageing:
Pummelo, like grapefruits contain spermadine which protect the cell from processes related to ageing and cell damage. It combats wrinkles and skin ageing and makes the skin appear youthful, fair and soft. It not only removes free radicals that harm the skin, but also assists the body to boost the production of collagen.

9. Weight loss:
Fiber is extremely significant for weight loss. Foods high in fiber stays in the stomach for a longer time and reduces regular hunger pangs. They also need more chewing time giving the body longer time to feel satisfied and reducing the risk of too much eating. This fruit also has properties which help to burn the fat reducing the starch and sugar content in the body.

10. Prevents osteoporosis:
Uncontrolled osteoporosis can affect posture, bodily movements as well as flexibility. Treatment for brittle bones calls for a diet rich in calcium and minerals to encourage new bone development. The pulp of pummelo boosts bone health and decreases the potential risk of building brittle bones.

11. Aids digestion:
The high Vitamin C content in pummelo retains the elasticity of arteries and improves the digestive system. Although the food has high ascorbic acid content, it produces an alkaline reaction once digested.  Pummelo is filled with dietary fiber which assists in preserving normal bowel motions and avoids haemorrhoids.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Want A Citrus Tree In A Cold Yard?

Ten Degree Tangerine also known as Clem-Yuz 3-3 can be a citrus tree for yards outside of the citrus belt.  This very ornamental citrus tree was developed in Texas, and it sure lives up to it name. A friend's tree bloomed and then set fruit after sustaining temperatures as low as 21-F over a cold period of 49 hours.  The sweet/sour tasting tangerine fruit ripens around Christmas in Texas.  Grafted upon a Flying Dragon root stock the tree can reach a height of around 12- feet when fully matured. Stan Mckenzie of Mckenzie Farms offers this tree at $20.00 in a one gallon container (or $20 per gallon). - Millet
