Citrus General Discussion / Sukari orange (sweet Egyptian orange)

Stopped over at my favorite nursery and my nurseryman said he had only one of these Sukari oranges trees for sale. I bought it as I like the odd ball citrus and couldnt find almost any info on it.

Can anyone tell me more about this Sukari orange?

I recently purchased some ugli fruit from the grocery store and am amazed how delicious these are. Possibly my new favorite citrus! The inside is simialr to a pomelo with differentiating membranes. The ones I bought contained 10 or less seeds in each. I plan on growing them until I lose interest or need more space in the greenhouse.

 Is anyone growing these outdide of their native range? If so, how are the overall characteristics of shape, size, taste, and overall hardiness?

Im growing I. feuillei variety. From my extensive research and given flavor profiles of similar species, feuillei seems like the real deal in taste and texture compared to edulis and other varieties that either contain only taste or texture but not both as the superior feuillei speciee

That's my website and a page I've forgotten about - so it hasn't been updated for 13 years!!
Nevertheless, many of these books are still a good read.
The Citrus Industry, Vol. 1 is still the most detailed botanical reference book covering citrus and related species, even though genetic studies have now altered the understanding of some relationships. It can be found through second hand book sites but is also available to read online.


Thank you for building that website. I am thoroughly enjoying it and I hope you can continue working on it one day (hopefully before I read most of it)




Also, thanks for the recommendations. I ordered 'The Biology of Citrus' off ebay the other night. Any more recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Same here. All my manure is added the same day I clean out the rabbit and quail cages. Other than foliar sprays in winter and homemade compost, the plants thrive perfectly fine. It is worrisome that so many members are okay with the added plastic in their ferts that inevitably they consume  :o

Before I made a purchase, I noticed many reviews stating the new formula has micro-plastics. Anyone have more info on this?

I have had good experience pruning about 1/3 back or less and I usually get more vigor and more fruit after pruning. I usually prune early fall and in spring the next year the pruned off sections grow fast and flower and fruit. I usually prune almost half the total number of branches at one time and the following year prune the other half that was not pruned

Georgia grown citrus has good quality and very reasonably priced plants.

Ive been to Mckenzie farms many times being 1.5 hours away. Definitely call him if you are driving there for anything in particular. Ive picked up red limes, sanbocan lemon, kumquats, jaboticabas, yuzu, meyers. He has a nice random variety but stock is also limited

Anyone have any growing experience with the Japanese raisin tree? Since I cannot find a live plant I planned on ordering seeds online and germinating them myself. Any advice would be great! I am in zone 8b

The blood orange can hang outside longer than your finger lime. Finger limes prefer 45F and up. Im in zone 8b and last winter I put mine on a wooden pallet with caster wheels and wheeled it in and out of the garage from mid November to end of March and it did just fine. As mentioned earlier, go light on watering and do not fertilize or prune at this time

This looks like a Fuyu variety. I have some myself. It is best to wait until they turn yellow and then orange. Once they have a small give to them when you squeeze them they are ready to be eaten. I enjoy them more soft then firm. If you pick them somewhat early they will still ripen in the sun over time
