active mods... good question.

I'd probably reach out to JakeFruit or pj1881

drymifolia, did you contact admins directly for a password reset? Not sure how frequently they browse the forum topics themselves. Best of luck!

From the USDA APHIS website (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/traveler/intl-travel/plants-seeds/plants-seeds):

Travelers may bring seeds of admissible herbaceous plants for planting if they meet the following conditions:

- The seeds are not otherwise prohibited, protected under the Endangered Species Act or Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or subject to any special restrictions, such as post-entry quarantine or treatment*

- You have a phytosanitary certificate issued by the National Plant Protection Organization of the country you are leaving indicating the seeds are free of pests and diseases

- U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspects the seeds at the first port of entry and determines they are free of pests and diseases and meet all entry requirements

*Please call APHIS’ Plant Import Information Line at 877-770-5990 (toll-free) or by email at plantproducts.permits@aphis.usda.gov.

Some information on USDA websites indicates that tree and shrub seeds can be brought back to the US per requirements listed above, yet some sources say none can be brought back with passenger luggage. Best course of action would be to shoot an email inquiry to that listed email.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What Eats Papaya Leafs?
« on: December 01, 2023, 10:49:43 AM »
Fairly certain it's iguanas Rob.
I had the EXACT same damage on my smaller papayas and mulberries at opposite ends of my yard. Finally caught them one morning -- 2 baby lizardrats hanging out on a pencil-thin strawberry tree (they figured out what could support their weight) and casually eating the adjacent plant leaves. Sent them to a farm up north for unlimited leaf buffet...

Aside from that ^ the only thing that worked for me was elevating the plants on a stand that they can't climb or jump onto. That papaya is definitely sturdy enough to support their weight, at least the smaller ones.

Female papaya's that dont get pollinated will produce seedless fruit, i believe they are considered parthenocarpic.
I prefer the taste of seedless papaya, much milder. Lucky find!

Seeds arrived looking great, thanks Miguel!

I highly recommend anyone in Zone 10b+ grabs at least a few Matoa from Lance. One of the prettiest trees I've grown and had great germination from Lance. I didn't experience any pests.
Lost it to a cold snap and wish I had the space to try again.

My man Dan absolutely killing it with these beautiful cacti!
Dual purpose as a medieval morningstar is also very clutch lol  ;D

Not much literature but I would think investing in more than one plant would definitely increase the odds of fruit production.

Although my two grafts failed, I had luck with three cuttings pushing leaves. Unfortunately two of my cuttings up and died one day, one molded over quickly. I wish I started this process ~2 weeks ago, the weather here has cooled down like 10-12 degrees.

One rooted cutting still alive and pushing some growth though! Thanks Kaz! really looking forward to this variety.

An update for the current and future growers of this species:

At this point, I think its safe to terminate my plant (the other one died on its own accord) as the health issues are too persistent. I am still leaning towards fungal issues as the ultimate reason for their weakness and demise. New soil, micronutrients, pH adjustment, etc nothing seemed to help.

Initially after a series of fungicide baths, both plants were pushing clean new growth with healthier-looking, darker leaves. Then they shed those leaves, one plant died, and the other is pushing new chlorotic leaves with brown spotting (pictured below). Overall, I think I just got unlucky with the circumstances.

This straggler is free to anyone who wants to bother before I send him to 'live on the farm up north'

I think most of these are going to be difficult to find.

Anderson Tropical's has a few V. surinamensis seeds left.
https://andersontropicals.com/products/virola-surinamensis-ucuuba-seeds

If you're working on a legitimate research project and don't want to spend too much on Inga laurina seeds, you can register with the USDA and snag some seeds from the Plant Germplasm database. Otherwise plenty of sellers online.

Forum member Lilith-vzla was selling Tetragastris panamensis seeds a few years ago, you may want to reach out to them.

Best of luck.

Wallets out, y'all!
The $10,000 Duguetia seedling is here!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1536875292/duguetia-furfuracea-extremely-rare?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=duguetia+furfuracea&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&frs=1&cns=1&organic_search_click=1

Make sure to buy it now because there will never ever ever ever ever be another Duguetia available in the US again. I should have never given my plants to a friend, I would've been a millionaire!  /s

You could also consider Logees, a reputable seller and they usually have solid grafts. They are selling a Set of Susquehanna and Shenandoah, two great Peterson varieties.
Or see what aaronn's got cause honestly those KSU varities are fire.

20
You can preorder from Tropical Acres if you don't find anything here.

I agree with W., maybe a few crops in and itll taste better. Have you fertilized recently?
I don't think ice cream beans are to die for, but all the ones i've eaten are very pleasant and sweet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit tree zone 9 wet area
« on: October 09, 2023, 11:21:07 AM »
I'm not familiar with any good-tasting fruiting species that like their feet wet, other than Acai palm that grows naturally in swamps. You may want to consider finding a dwarf variety.

You should also consider using the pond apple as a grafting rootstock for better Annonas, especially if it is healthy and thriving.

kankan has yours ever flowered? My tree was producing fruit within the first year. Year 2 is when the quality/taste got better. They love warm temps, full sun, and some humidity.
They only sell females commercially because its considered an invasive species, when a male gets involved they spread by the hundreds. I would suggest making sure you have a female prior to purchasing additional plants.

If you want a "small" one, I heard they are relatively easy to air-layer. Would be the best bet, otherwise they grow really fast (like most pioneer species) and large.
I would offer but I sold my tree about a month ago, as it was too large.

Yeah at this time, I dont see any available online for a reasonable price or from a reputable source.

I believe forum member nattyfroootz (www.wildlandsplants.com) mentioned they would have seedlings for sale in the near future. May want to reach out.

If any forum members are willing to part ways with a cutting of their vine(s), I'm all ears!
