C. tetrameria #6 and #7 scions - CLOSED
« on: February 14, 2022, 09:35:12 PM »
For friends who are around driving distance from North Miami Beach, FL :

I am going to graft some C.tetrameria #6 and #7 (wooly white sapote) variety to my C. edulis- regular white sapote seedlings. I have 5 spots where i can graft. I might be getting more than 5 scions from a very generous forum member in CA. If you want to graft C.tetrameria on to regular white sapote please message me. Won't ship.

Update Feb16th, 2022 - Scions arrived early, i have grafted much, some still left but so far no interest from growers in Miami-Dade and Broward county. Probably there are more rare fruit growers in West palm and northern counties and in Gulf coast area but since nobody reached out, i will close the topic. In future, if my grafts take and i can provide any scions i will be happy to share.

Reportedly, C. tetrameria #6 and #7 are one of the best tasting ones from CRFG taste test. Also using C.tetrameria as an interstock or a rootstock has been found to dwarf the size of C.edulis trees without compromising the fruit production. This experiment was done in CA so i don't know how they will perform in Florida weather and soil, but i am trying to experiment and welcome anyone who wants to join.

Also, i am sharing this, not selling. I am only trying to distribute the species so we can have them for more growers here in South Florida.

Sounds very interesting. It would be nice to have these varieties tested in Florida. I wonder if they will be productive here. Thanks for posting.

Satya, I have C.tetrameria #7 grafted on my tree. I got my scion wood from Jack 2-1/2 yrs ago.

This week I got my first full size fruit, it's huge, taste is good. You will like it when yours start to fruit. The variety is very productive, I had to thin out the fruits since it has large clusters and the fruits are large. You can check out my other post to see the photos of the fruit.

Darn!  Sorry I missed this.  I have been after this yellow sapote for a while even DM you about it.  Unfortunately I have been away from the forum for a few weeks.  It's probably too late but, I am interested in grafting it to my white sapotes.  I currently have 2 big Redlands one with a Mary Lane graft.  I started a bunch of White sapote seedlings to use in the future for grafting other varieties onto.  I also got some C. Tertrameria seeds from Raul in Mexico and they are starting to sprout.  I plan on using these for rootstock and graft white sapote onto it for dwarfing.  I have never tasted the yellow and a bunch of other varieties but want to graft and grow them.  I have tried all the ones at the fruit and spice park as well as Campbell with Julian at Lara Farms.  I love White sapote and am growing it at home.  In the next year I will have several grafted plants.  If anyone out there has C. tetrameria #6 and #7 scions, I'm interested.  Also interested in trying the fruit and other varieties of WS.  Let me know.  Thanks.

Pretty new to fruit growing but I am full steam ahead and getting much better.

viDda, interesting that you have tasted a lot of the Florida white sapote. Can you comment on which Florida white sapote tasted the best to you so far, and especially the taste of Campbell white sapote from Julian.

I have 22 varieties grafted on my two small seedling trees and only got a handful of fruits from some varieties I listed on the other post I referenced. I liked the Younghan's Gold from Florida a lot, it tasted sweet, no after taste, no grit, very smooth flesh to eat with a spoon.

As far as getting scion wood of c. tetrameria #6 & #7, that will be a little more difficult since I don't know but a few people that seems to have it grafted and growing on their trees. I have both, but only the #7 is growing well. The #6 never grew much and the graft may die soon. These yellow sapote grafts do not grow that fast so it will take some years before the tree is large enough to take many cuttings to share.

Hi Kaz, this is very interesting. Hopefully there will be more interest in the forum for the yellow sapotes now. When i was offering scions for free nobody was interested, and probably it could have been because it was free  ::) . My grafts have grown slowly, one or two flushes since that time i grafted. Since i am in the process of moving out of the country, i will be selling the whole tree, 15g with 5-6 different branches grafted with #6 and #7 and one have a branch with suebelle. The rootstock is the seedling tree that you sent me. My best FL cultivar in terms of taste is also Younghan's Gold.

Satya, yes, I agree, when you say free, some people think it must not be good. But they are wrong, the c.tetrameria #7 is probably one with the largest fruit (1.9 lbs), closet I had was the Cuccio fruits. The fruit production of #7 is almost as much as the Younghan's Gold. Your multi-grafted white sapote tree with three varieties should sell quick. I think the rootstock should be semi-dwarf like my yellow sapote tree.

Of all my varieties, the Younghan's Gold (after 3yrs) is the most productive. I have the Campbell plant, a small one from FL that I purchased this year, I will be grafting it on my in-ground tree so that I can compare it with the other varieties next year. I just added another new variety (for me) called Michele, it's a white sapote and it does have some caramel flavor to it. The fruit on the Michele variety was only 1-1/2" diameter and green when I picked it, so I let it soften on my counter. I didn't expect it to have any taste when it got soft, but I was surprised when it tasted good with caramel taste. A full size fruit that is ripe should taste very good.

Well as far taste I'm not very experienced and have only tried a few, but of the ones I have tried the mory of my first WS (Redlands) was the best ever.  Julian gave me a couple about a year ago and that taste has not been matched in my mind yet.  All summer I have been eating the ones from the Fruit and Spice Park (ironically except from the Redland tree they have there) and they are good but not better than the redland's I ate last year.  The one's Julian gave me were from his own tree.  I have a redland grafted from that tree now.  This summer Julian gave me a Campbell (his favorite) to try.  It was very good, but not as good as last years Redlands.  Satya recommended the Younghans which I have yet to try but want to.

As far as the Yellow Sapote,   I never knew about them until this summer.  Like I said before, i missed Satya's offer because I was away from the forum for a blink.  The seeds I got from Raul do seem to be growing strong so I am excited about that.

I don't have a lot of space but am growing as much as I can of fruits that I like.  I have 5 dwarfish - low vigor mango trees (one is multi grafted), Bananas, 2 papayas, Soursop, Red sugar apple, Multi-grafted atemoya (Lisa & African Pride), Makok Sapodilla, several pineapples, Rollinia, Mai1 Jackfruit, dragonfruit.  Some are in the ground some in pots.  I'm being selective as to what I put in the ground because of space which is what caught my attention to the yellow sapote dwarfing WS.  That is ideal for me.  My WS are in pots but I am going to put one in the ground soon.

Thanks for all the sharing and great information.  This forum has been the best!

viDda, thank you for your feedback on the taste. I heard of a few other forum members from Florida that have said they like the Redlands a lot. I do have some cuttings of the Redlands grafted so I hope next year it will hold the first fruits and I can compare it to the others on my tree.
