Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: At what temp to protect young fruit trees?

did a little experiment sunday night in East Broward County, Fla (Hollywood, 10b). i covered some young, potted breadfruit trees with a painter's, canvas drop cloth and placed a temp logger in one of the 3 gal pots (~10" above grade) under the drop cloth. i placed another logger at the same elevation in a 3 gal pot outside the cover (exposed). i set the loggers to begin at midnight and record temp every 15 min until 10 the next morning. the accuweather temp monday morning here was reported at 45F. My exposed logger recorded 42.7F and my 'protected' logger recorded 43.6F. the bottom line here seems to be that the temp near the ground is lower than reported by weather services (potted plants are usually near the ground), and the drop cloth provided very little protection. it is thicker than bed sheets but a larger weave (more air flow). This says if you are using bed sheets, make sure to wrap them more than one layer thick for decent protection.
