Citrus General Discussion / Pomelo hybrid from Medici citrus collection
« on: January 01, 2022, 09:15:21 AM »
Finally ripe fruit of C. grandis x C. paradisi called “Piriforme”. Plant I bought from Tintori nursery years ago.
This pomelo hybrid belongs to the Medici citrus collection that was started by Cosimo I between 1554 and 1568 and reached its height under Cosimo III.
The fruit has thick rind that turns yellow when fully ripe. The thick pith is not edible and the flesh tastes like mix of pomelo and grapefruit, its a bit sour, but edible. Mostly for ornamental purpose.

Citrus General Discussion / Honikan mandarin
« on: October 29, 2019, 01:51:58 PM »
In former Yugoslavia nurseries they sold mandarin called Honikan.
Since that time it is in collections.
Adavo nursery in CR also sells it.
http://www.rakytnik.com/index.php/galerie/citrusy/mandarinky/citrus-reticulata-blanco/honikan
According to yugoslavian sources in 1934 japan consul sent 372 trees of unshiu, honikan and natsu mikan as gift to Yugoslavian kingdom.

But I cannot find citrus called honikan in Japan. I would like to find out what is this cultivar about.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Japan acid citruses
« on: June 02, 2019, 01:59:17 AM »
I see a lot of discussion about culinary use of acid citruses in this forum. So, in Japan they eat a lot of sea food, so usage of acid citruses is popular.
So here is a list of japan acid citruses (or citruses used green unripe to use their acidity).

Citrus junos Yuzu

The most expensive is 木頭系(きとう)Kitō-kei (kitō), Yuzu kito, it has biggest fruit of standard yuzus.

Another famous selection is 早生種の「山根系」Yamane-kei  やまねゆず(はやしげる)Yamane yuzu (haya Shigeru)
The Yamane kei was selected in Mr. Yamane 's garden in Anan City.
Seedless yuzu is called 種なしの (多田錦(ただにしき)) Tada nishiki yuzu

Citrus General Discussion / Ponderosa lemon history
« on: April 25, 2019, 05:41:34 AM »
I found great article about Ponderosa lemon history, it is in czech language. http://citrusy.info/ponderosa-citrus-pyriformis/
So, here are some nice points. :
First time it appeared in spring catalog of Schmidt & Botley comp. in 1899. Under the name "American Wonder Lemon"
Here is their catalog from 1900.

Competitive company  Good & Reese presented it under the name Ponderosa in their catalog in 1900.
https://archive.org/stream/CAT31284616#page/28/mode/2up
They choosed the name Ponderosa lemon most likely from "ponderous Lemons".

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop fruiting in living room.
« on: April 20, 2019, 10:02:07 AM »
In 2005 I sowed a seed of annona muricata . Seedling flowered for the first time in the age of five.
Since then it flowered several times each year, but because of long period between flowering of single flowers, it was impossible to pollinate it.
Finally this winter, flowers opened shortly one by one. So I pollinated with one day old pollen.
On 3.24. it was clear that one is pollinated < the right one from this pair>.

I used the pollen from the flower on the leff side of this picture.
On 4.12. I recognized strange thing. The flower from which I took the pollen, started to separate too <on the right side of this picture>.

So now I have two fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana seeds are tough.
« on: September 14, 2018, 05:39:51 AM »
In 2007, I bought seeds of Musa X sikkimensis "Daj Giant", Ensete glaucum and Musa violacea, some of them I sowed and the rest put in the drawer.
One ensete plant in 2008 from those seeds.:

This year, I decided to clean the drawer  and because I did not want to simply throw old banana seeds to bin I sowed them here and there in pots with plants and....
voilà : After 11 years in drawer.
