Cold Hardy Citrus / OxiDate, Any experiance use this on citrus?
« on: March 04, 2023, 05:49:17 PM »
I have been reading that hydrogen peroxide is good for treating fungal diseases, sterilizing soil, eliminating mites and scale and even increasing the oxygen in the soil.  I bought OxiDate to try out.  I would love to know  if any of you have used it and how effective or what risks there may be when applying it to citrus or citrus potting soil?

Can one see a visible difference between the dormant PT flower buds and leaf buds in the fall?
Thanks!

I have a Mayer lemon in a pot that has a weeping form. It sends out long sender branches and blooms and sets fruit on the branch tips. It then the branches bends and drops to the side and destabilize the pot. Its cumbersome to move about and doesn't look as nice as it would if the branches were sturdier and shorter.  I noticed and treated it for scale this spring which made it grow more vigorously but still the same long slender framework with fruit at the tips of the branches.

Is there a general practice for pruning potted citrus you can recommend. Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Are these leaf minor eggs?

I often notice these tiny eggs on new citrus shoots. The citrus leaf minor is a nuisance here.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Fukushu X PT seed
« on: September 02, 2021, 05:09:48 PM »
Here are a couple of images of seed from a Fukushu X PT cross I made this spring.  I peeled the seed coat off to increase the speed of germination.  It's interesting to see the color differences in the embryos. Someone on this forum had indicated there would be a color difference if the PT parent has tan seed and the citrus parent's seed are dark green. I am hoping/guessing the lighter colored embryo's are the crosses and the darker green are the apomictic embryo's.

The is the second batch of seed I prepared this way. Many of the seed from the first batch have germinated eight days later, the shoots are still too small to see if any have trifoliate leaves.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / American black cherry
« on: June 26, 2021, 09:57:55 PM »
There are many wild black cherries in the US south east where sweet cherries and pie cherries do not grow or live very long.  Does anyone know if black cherry cultivars have been selected for fruit and if any one is working with these fruit?

Citrus General Discussion / Orange Pollen: is it sterile ?
« on: March 15, 2021, 07:11:38 PM »
I have read a couple of sources that state that oranges have sterile pollen. I have a Hamlin orange and an Amber-sweet just starting to bloom. The anthers look plump and yellow but I have not seen them shed pollen yet. Does anyone have experience with pollen and these two oranges?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Is precociousness inherited?
« on: February 26, 2021, 07:32:42 PM »
It seems like there has been some breeding work by members of this forum with Laaz's precocious PT.  Has anyone noticed if this trait transfer's to hybrid offspring?

Citrus General Discussion / monoembryony inheritance question
« on: January 29, 2021, 11:39:33 AM »
I read this post on a citrus site

" Originally uglis were thought to be chance hybrids of mandarin and grapefruit. Closer examination of the various strands has shown that many parents are involved. Because of the monoembryony exhibited by the seeds, some botanists are of the opinion that a pomelo is the parent in question rather than grapefruit." -- http://citruspages.free.fr/pomelos.php

It seems that there is an idea about monoembryony quality of trees transferring to the offspring when the tree is used as the female parent.  Does  monoembryony transfer in that way?  Any ideas on how it segregates in mono x polyembryonic crosses?

- Thanks

Citrus General Discussion / What causes hardened pulp in tangerines?
« on: December 30, 2020, 02:33:22 PM »

Does anyone know what causes citrus pulp to harden like in this picture?   Here is an example of three fruit from Changsha tangerine.  The one in the middle is intermediate between juicy and hard.  The fruit appear normal in all the other ways and  make seeds that look normal. I cannot tell which ones will have hard pulp by looking at the fruit. Only when opened up is it possible to tell.

Does anyone know if Changsha would provide good cold hardiness and dwarfing to scions?  I made a few cleft grafts of various citrus on an orange X  P. trifoliate  cross and all varieties took except the Changsha which all failed. The Changsha scion died really quickly also, not a lingering death.  At least 50% of all the other varieties successfully grafted and the ones that didn't stayed green for months. Earlier,  I used the Changsha as a root stock and the scions (tangelo, tangerine) grow but much slower than on citrange or citrumelo.  The Changsha root stock grafts are only a few years old so I like to know if they will be good root stocks.   Thanks.
