Potted persimmons showing some worying sighns
« on: July 02, 2023, 09:09:25 AM »
I have those two, one is fuyu, the other is a astringent type, prolly hachia. Lately they have been slolely getting yellower(leaves), especially the fuyu. They are also getting some little brown spots/dots, mainly on the oldest leaves, both of them. I am watering every day, they dry up very fast, could this be from lach of nutrients, i am scared to fertilize them, as ive had tremendous fruit and flower drop after fertilization in the past. I gave them a green kristalon leaf spray several days ago. I think i have to repot them also, as those pots are probably way too tight on them, hence the fast drying up. I gave them some iron drench today, hopefully it helps some, planning to repot them somewhere theese days.

Well i replanted them i bigger pots, soil i used was 2 parts peat, 1 part vermicompost and a generous amount of perlite.
I did them about a week ago, when i took them out of the pots, oh wow were they potbound, the bottoms had nothing but layers of roots on top of eachother. I untagled what i could , all of the curling roots at the ends of the pot i untangled, i would have done alot more root work but since its summer and hot as an oven , i kept it to a minimum.
I think i am seeing a slight greening on them as of now. I find that the iron needs a good 2-3 weeks to show its effect. I will dose them again theese days.
They do have some fruit set drop now, i just hope i dont end up with nothing like last year, i wont fertilize them with npk ferts, the new soil i planted them in should cover those.
The black spots i think havent gotten worse,  havent really looked at the plants in detail theese days...

They started declining a bit so i ended up planting them in the ground last spring. One of the trees died over winter, could have been the cold, as they were never subjected to much cold, as i was overwintering them in my basement trought the years they were pot grown. The other plant is fine and is waking up right now. I think that they do fine in pots, but once you reach the maximum of the pot size you vould handle, then you should start root pruning and replacing soil periodically. I did not want to mess further with them, being in pots, beacuse they are hardy enough to grow outside here.
