Ok here's the golden question. How much $$$ have you spent in this hobby? Make an estimate and put in your vote!
I hope as many people as possible vote and increase the validity of the data.

This is an open discussion, so feel free to put anything you feel is relevant in the thread!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chicken Claw Mulberry
« on: August 21, 2024, 10:45:17 PM »
After taking over a year of failure, I was finally able to get the elusive chicken claw mulberry.
I guess it's pretty self explanatory with the leaf patterns.
Definitely looks different that the other mulberry leaf types. Pretty cool!

Here's a picture of a fruiting tree (not mine)

It's definitely something that does really well in a pot.
Not much to eat though I will be honest.
I will add pictures tomorrow.
Had a lot of fruits on it, but the chickens ate all the ripe ones today.
Down to trade or for sale for $101 plus shipping.

Hello Everybody!
Today is the start of the super mega sale lol. I just got in a ton of new seeds and am selling some spare plants.
Sale will end at the end of this week. I am going to be starting college after, so sales of this big qty will be on hold after.
Seeds have been inspected by USDA either Miami or ATL stations.
I'm also selling a bunch of plants too.

If you buy a plant, shipping for any amount of seeds is free!

Here's the list of stuff for sale.

Grapes - many cool varieties you know and love. The pictures shows the average size of plants being sold
I have
Shine muscat - $30
Giant Rose - $50
Golden Finger - $50

Drunken Incense - $40

Check out this link to learn more about the grapes! https://www.itsjapanese.com/food/expensive-japanese-grape-varieties/

Davidson's plum - $25 - Makes beautiful fruits like a plum on the trunk of the tree. This one is Davidsonia jerseyana.
 SOLD

Red Kadsura $30

Plinia sp. Willow. This new introduction is famed for its very long and narrow leaves like a willow tree. $125

Plinia Honey Syrup. This one is a selection of sabara that makes marbeled fruits. In addition to this, the seeds are often aborted leading to greater flesh to seed ratio.
Definitely something to consider for those growing jabos for applicability. $80

SOLD

Rooted Giant Red Crystal cutting. GRC makes big red fruits and has phitrantha parentage, leading to a more precocious tree. $30
SOLD

Grafted Red Pouch - First time I've seen grafted trees offered in the USA. Also has phitrantha parentage leading to quick fruits. $75 SOLD

Restinga hybrid. This is a selected hybrid of restinga noted for its rounder leaves and peculiar appearance. Mother plant has not fruited, as the collector keeps propagating the tree due to the beautiful look. $55

Cynometra cauliflora - namnam. This rare fruit from Indonesia is said to taste like Asian Pears. The fruit is juicy and aromatic and has a nice sweet/acid balance described in taste reports. Joe Hewitt in HI has fruited this one and describes the fruit as, "quite good...it was quite sweet and barely tart...reminded me of a jujube"
$14 a seed.

In addition to this,
I have

  Myrica rubra Seeds available
These came from 2024 crop and are very fresh
Bulk qty available too

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I finally fruited Lychee in TN!
« on: July 16, 2024, 02:58:46 PM »

Well after some time, I finally got my lychee to fruit!
This is sweetheart variety.
Pretty good first crop. Got around 50+ fruits so I'm thankful.
Tree is in ground. In a pot, I would have gotten a fraction of the fruit.
Brix lvls are up there too at 21.5%.
I also got several giant fruits so that's really cool.
I am going to plant another lychee tree in my greenhouse to make the total to 3 plants.
This has to be my favorite fruit or at least top 3.

Hello,
I have one spare mangifera odorata seed for sale. The fruit smells amazing (odorata) LOL. I just let one sit out on the counter for a week and the whole kitchen smelled good.
Has a good bit of fiber like many wild mangos. Sweet and a little like durian has a bit of funk, but nonetheless super cool.
$15 includes shipping anywhere in the USA. Please pm me by tonight so I can send it out tomorrow. I will need your address!
Best,
Ryan

I also have a dwarf orange pitanga plant...seed source was Sellami.
The fruits are orange and are supposed to have great taste and no resin.
Seedling in 1 gallon pot for $30

Hello,
I am in need of someone in SoCal to potentially pick up a tree for me next week or so around San Diego...
Also, you would need to ship the tree to me too.
I am willing to give away a free variegated red jaboticaba for your time. Or something of equal value in scions or random plants. Or can just pay you straight up!
Will also cover shipping.
I have family who could do it too, but they're a pretty far drive away, so I'm seeing if anyone here who is close is willing to first.
I hate Socal traffic too so I totally understand the pain ;D
Plan is not locked in, so may not happen.
Will provide more details once you pm.
Best,
Ryan

I am going to prune back my tree and am wondering if people are interested in scions.
I can do a 5+ Scion pack with different thicknesses up to a little less or around 3/8 of an inch.
$30 shipped anywhere in USA.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A new top mamey emerges
« on: July 10, 2024, 07:14:23 PM »
So when I was in FL, I had the opportunity to visit Julian Lara. His place is sweet, a great place to buy top tier plants.
He gave me a new mamey he found at the TREC planted back then by Jonathan Crane. The seeds originated in Guatemala.
Julian says it’s his favorite mamey, and that goes to say it’s definitely worth something since his family has been growing mamey for a long time.
My friend also tried it and said it’s his 2nd favorite (Jamaica takes win)
Regardless, this mamey is top!
Propagation on this tree has already gone underway and I’m super excited. The fruits aren’t too big so they’ll only take 6-12 months on the tree instead of the 18 for the giant ones.

This is so good that I think mamey could have a good run for my top 5 fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mercurial Marvel Mango
« on: July 09, 2024, 11:57:55 PM »
Anyone have more information on this?
I tried it and it was my favorite mango this year, and definitely in my top 3-5 overall.
I know it's from MMH, but other than that, anybody have a tree?
I'm keen to get this variety.
Tastes like mango with a hint of muscadines!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / FL 2024 Trip Jaboticaba45
« on: July 06, 2024, 11:06:47 PM »
Just got back from my FL 2024 trip yesterday.
It was very quick. Thank you to everyone that let me stop by.
Also thanks to everyone who would've let me stop by but couldn't due to scheduling issues.
I had two days to hit all the stops, so it was very busy and I ended up getting sick at the end from all the action and heat down there.

I may have some more content coming out on YT...but I need to start my plinia costaricensis video first.

Check out the three big trees I brought back...Fruiting imbe, cashew, and grimal. The imbe is at least 8 ft tall with pot lol.
not to mention the other 20 or so random small ones.

Not much mangos this year. Also many were washed out.
Winners were angie...and some LZ. Very disappointing year. Next year is supposed to be good though!
Tried some more wild mangos and wangos...wild child from Mango Men Homestead
and some odorata and katsuri from Xain!

There's achacha, imbe, lemon drop, and seashore.

If you see any seeds you want, please pm me if you want to buy. Or else they'll be hitting the trash lol.
I'm not selling any mango seeds this year though of the wangos or wild mangos.

The mamey that is not cut has a big story...I'll make a separate post on it.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Rare grapes + Jabo for sale
« on: June 17, 2024, 04:12:11 PM »
Hello,
I have some new and cool grape varieties that have just been released on the market.
These can grow zones 5-9b. But any warmer and you may get problems with disease in Florida.
My connections in South Florida who trialed the grape reported that they didn't do too well. These grow well where you can grow yangmei.
California should be good as there is low humidity.
high humidity and heat year round = not good.

Grapes
Shine muscat - $40 buy 4 and get free shipping
Giant rose- $65
Drunken Incense - $50
Red Incense - $50
Gold finger - $75
Prices reflect rarity and qty alive.
Some I could only get a couple of.

Also have this nice Giant Red crystal plant for $65
Giant Rose ----This size reflects most other ones too.

Hello everyone,
I've realized that there has been not much conversation about the tropical spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, bay leaf, star anise, nutmeg, etc.
This thread will be used to discuss and bring light to growing different spices.
What cool ones do you have in your collection?
Which ones do you want to grow and obtain?
This is a very open thread to whatever pertains to spices.

S - Spices

T - Tropicals

A - Aromatics

R - Roots (Ginger, etc)

I'll go first...
After a long long time of waiting, I was finally able to obtain some true star anise plants (Ilicium verum). When you crush the leaves, it smells just like the ones in stores.
Be careful as all of the relatives of star anise are toxic!

I will post pictures tomorrow!

What spices are you growing?

24
Well after having trouble with pictures, here are some more plants for sale.

Kadsura var red
These are the red variety! The price is $40.
There are 4 plants, but one is already taken. (You know who you are please message me when you need it sent!)

Shine Muscat plants
I am thankful to have many available.
$40 each if buy 1
35 each if buy 2
if buy 4+ 30 each

This is Eugenia Truncata. This is not for sale. I'm just posting it here cause the pictures work. (see other thread)

Big variegated scarlets available
These have fruited and flowered before. One has flowers that got knocked off by accident
Please offer what you would like. They are very thicc and broad.
$450 obo
The trunk diameter 4 inches up is around 1 inch!

Local pickup in TN = no shipping charges and 10% off
If ordering = shipping cost add in

Hello everyone,
I recently got back from my Costa Rica trip,
and while I was there, I found a new eugenia which is E. truncata.
Tastes very astringent, but when soaked in salt water for 12 hours, the astringency level decreased and was definitely eatable and had a nice sweet tropical blackberry flavor.
Makes a beautiful black fruit and has very pretty leaves.
I can't upload pictures for some reason...maybe can drop them later.
I've posted this one on FB already.
I have three seeds to give away. (I don't feel right selling a eugenia that has more ornamental value than eating value).
These are the only ones I can offer.
Then it will be gone forever.

All you have to do to enter is to subscribe to my YT channel  https://youtube.com/@ryanstropicalfruits?si=FzaPPU8om1UdKFEa
and comment on this thread.
Stay tuned for CR content coming soon!

I'll pick out three winners on 5/30 at 10 am eastern time.
If you win, just send me your address and I'll ship the seed out to you!

Thanks for looking!
