should I get a myrciaria vexator?
« on: October 10, 2024, 05:38:36 PM »
i have been reading about it lately, it looks cool and prolific. is it worth growing with somewhat limited space?
I'm on the hunt for jaboticaba, Eugenia, Pouteria, Passiflora, and annona fruits (like the fruit part), if you have any to spare, lemme know!  I'm also looking for any plants that could bear fruit soon :)

If limited space...I would vote "absolutely not".  It's a beautiful tree and the fruit is also attractive, but that's about it.  I was very underwhelmed with the fruit itself.  If you have lots of space, go for it.

It honestly is an ok fruit with a sweet taste, but most people would prefer a true jaboticaba over vexator.
On vexator, the skin is very thick and tannic. And it also has giant seeds.
Lowkey about to throw mine out lol.

Tonight is first frost for me here so I had to bring everything in from outside.  When there is no more space in the greenhouse and you know some things must be sacrificed, it makes you look long and hard at a lot of trees to see if they are really worth their space.  I have so many container plants now I have almost grown to enjoy the cull.

Grow it if you're interested, just don't spend too much money on it if you might end up ditching it before first fruiting.

No, but I've tried fruit before...
Not worth my investment.
Sabara is the best jabo you can probably get.
I have 100 plus varieties, but in the end, there's only a few that could trump a good sabara.

I've met fruit people that like it more than any Jaboticaba. To each their own and genetics do differ.
I think they can be pretty good. I think Aureana might be my favorite. Love that super sweet.

I tried them from F&S park in Homestead- there is a chance they were over ripe so I guess I should reserve judgment until another tasting

you can only eat fruit off of the ground there if I am correct? there is a chance it could have been fermented.
but like B2B said, there could be tree to tree variation

I've also heard vexator can be quite tasty. Not trashing my beautiful tree. Rather, trying grafting on to it. Anyone know what it is compatible with?

To me  vexator is better than any jabo iv tried. Only tried sabara, red hybrid, escarlete, coronata and axp. Vexator sucks if it's even a little under ripe. A good ripe vexator is hard to beat for me. I like the balance of sweet to sour, even has a little bitter flavor which like. Jabos get hit by birds here but they give up at trying to peck though vexator. Ill see their peck marks and failed attempts to get through the skin lol. Made jam with vexator and thought it was better than sabara jam

is it graft compatible with normal jabo? if so then I will defiantly make a jabo cocktail tree in the future

Never tried vexator onto sabara but I'm guessing not compatible
