Mercurial Marvel Mango
« on: March 05, 2025, 05:11:39 PM »
Does anyone have any more information on this one other than it is from MMH?
Does anyone have trees or scions available?
I love it very much top 5 mango for me.
I was wondering if any other collectors are growing it out and if they have any comments.

I believe these are Mango Men Homestead/ Dr. Richard Campbell exclusives. Not sure what the background story is- might have been when he was working with Fairchild. I have started to see them slowly escape little by little, but I don't know any reliable sources that are grafting/ providing scions yet. Hopefully soon.

I'm always interested in more mango varieties

Did a little digging. Squam has Mercurial Marvel on the website(Tropicalacresfarms) - but his probably isn't large enough to propagate. Then Chris (Truly Tropical) had a recent video where she mentioned a Nectar of Neptune topwork

We can probably graft it now. I top-worked the stump into it years ago but it’s in kind of a lousy spot that sees a little too much shade. In fact I tend to forget that it’s even there.

Thanks for the info! I look forward to putting a grafting request in when available!

I was actually just wondering the other day about Campbell’s celestial series mangoes. Does anyone know if any of those selections were originally a part of Zill’s breeding program or do those mangoes come from seeds planted at his property? Also I haven’t really heard of anyone else in south Florida growing or selling the trees of his mangoes like Big Saturn, juicy Jupiter, Mercurial Marvel, Veluptuous Venus, Martian Pride, Sunset, Plutonic Pleasure, etc. and from what I can tell most of them have been around for years but I don’t hear many people growing them in their yards nor do I ever see them being sold at truly tropical, tropical acres, Walter Zill’s, etc.
-Regards,  Josh W.

Not sure what the pedigree on those, I guess he would have to tell. 'Sunset' is an old variety from Pine Island planted by Frank Adams in the 40s, It's likely one of the parents of the Maha Chanok mango. Doesn't seem like it really made it off the island.

I've asked around there, but I suspect the newer growers have no idea, you'd have to ask an old timer. I know there were some mother trees around, not sure if any made it after all the hurricanes the past few years. Tropicalacresfarms (squam) propagates it, that's where I got mine.
