Want to add a Thai mango to my collection. Sia Siam possibly
« on: November 21, 2025, 10:01:51 AM »
I am growing several mango varieties and i feel it necessary to add a Thai mango to the family. A grower in my area had nothing but good things to report about this variety. Any experience with this tree or fruit? Any experience with the varieties that I'm currently growing? Please share. Pictures are welcomed as well. Thank you.

Doesn't look like you have many late season trees like Orange Essence or M4 so they could be a good addition. Never heard of Sia Siam though - sorry for off topic answer.

How about Thai Purple? I tasted this one at Xain's last summer and it really impressed me as an improved Valencia Pride with better flavor in a very large mango.

Do you have a photo of the Thai Purple, sounds like a good one. My friend Mike has the Valencia Pride and really likes his mango and doesn't want any others on his tree.

Dont be sorry! You make a good point. Ive heard Giselle is a notorious late season variety. I hear so many great things about m4. Do you have experience with them? I do also want to add OE it was between that an OS the last time i went to purchase trees lol. I told myself next time.

I've heard different opinions about TPs taste. I would like to try it first. Such a cool mango itd be awesome to have it even just as a collectors piece. I also try to buy locally and I don’t believe the growers I know carry it. Sounds like you're convinced on it. Are you growing it as well?

There are others with more experience - I'm sort of a beginner myself so my trees have not fruited yet. That said, M4 looks to be the gold standard of late season trees now and OE has a season that mirrors Kent - both are seemingly trouble free and productive within reason from what I've read and both taste excellent (IMO). Honeykiss and USDA Himsagar are great as well and if your area does not have MBBS, Venus could be another option for the time being. There's also Delores which probably tastes very similar to OE but there is little data on its performance. Oh yeah, and Neelam - but everyone hates it lol.

I went to Xain's with a buddy of mine and we were chatting with Xain and his brother. We tried a bunch of fruit, including a Thai Purple mango which really stood out with strong sweetness, classic mango flavor, nice texture all from a big size mango fruit. I'm out of space in my yard but my friend immediately bought a tree. I am pretty tough in my evaluations and I give Thai Purple a strong passing grade for those with the space to grow it. If you are looking to grow a big fruit type of mango like Harvest Moon or Valencia Pride, I would go with Thai Purple instead.

I didn't take a photo but  it does appear in the top left corner of Xain's mango poster. It's the big old purple one:

One thing I didn't think to ask is whether Thai purple truly is a Thai mango, you know, from Thailand?

I’ve never been impressed with any Thai mangos until I ate Kook Long Krong.

Did some research. This one sounds like a winner. Are you growing it?

If you have space, then sure.  However, I now live in Thailand and while there are some good mangoes here...none of them can begin to compete with one of the Zill varieties.

I have two of them, that I got years ago from Alex at TAF. It’s the only Thai mango I’ve ever tried with some complexity.
