Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizer's that sweeten fruit
« on: June 04, 2017, 01:18:44 AM »
My first fruiting of my Barbados cherry produced very tart fruit, but a cherry after taste.  I don't want to yank it until I get a second year of fruit and hopefully get improved fruit.  I also wanted to know if there are additives to the soil that can sweeten fruit.  More or less watering.  More or less sun. Planted the tree specifically for my son, who loves cherries.  Cannot grow regular cherries in Phoenix.

I tried some and thought them rather bitter as well.  But, if anyone can locate ones with sweet fruit, would love to try to grow some seeds.

Not trying to slander anyone.  For the record, gardening is my past time.  Regular job is dr.  Shamus is worse than Jake.  Hi new nickname on the Internet is shameless.  He makes even worse claims.  I guess, the other thing I don't like is that there are really good places out here for fruit trees, tropicamango,  a tropical concept, RSI nurseries.  These are great places to buy, the owners have a wealth of information and will talk you out of purchases if they think you are going to kill a tree.  But, because they don't go shirtless on the Internet or completely nude, they are all just old foggies that don't know what they are talking about.
If you have to educate yourself first to figure out what parts Jake and shamus say are true, versus total bs, then I wouldn't say they are good people to learn about gardening.

There are about 4 or 5 guys in Phoenix metro that self promote their products and trees.  They all act like experts, until someone calls them out on what they are doing as completely wrong.  Then they will admit they are amateurs.  Otherwise, they infer they are experts.  They also like to say things like, don't listen to the garden experts, you don't have to listen to what university agricultural sites say you can and cannot grow.  And on these same sites, they will block you if you too frequently correct their mistakes.
I have seen people do this a lot in the past.  I used to grow palms in southern VA.  Then, people come in selling their palms, when in fact their palms are good for so. FL.
I mean it shouldn't bother me too much because they affect me, but, when I see people out of state excited that he is coming to speak, it just seems so sleazy to me.

I wouldn't risk it unless someone says it is OK.  They get their name fRon the ability of their roots to suck all of the salt out of the ground.  They then transfer that salt to their needles.  When they drop their needles, they have a high salt content.  That high salt content kill's all the vegetation around it and kills off all competition.

Yeah, states rootstock abs grafting is a waste of time because he will show you how to modify your soil for any plant.  Has tons of sights that are supposedly educational, but, just are advertisements for him and his business.  Promotes planting some plants that are mostly tropical and says they will grow no problem in AZ, but, next cold winter we get they will all be toast.  Has no educational background to support the claims he makes.  Promotes all these soil additives as being necessary, when they are not, and low and behold he has them all for sale.
Promotes extremely waterm thirsty plants for the desert.  Promotes products with high amount's of nitrogen and phosphates which, with, storm run off, polutes strrams and wate supplies.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Barbados cherry
« on: May 14, 2017, 02:05:43 AM »
Are there varieties of barbado cherry with better fruit?  Bought mine off of a local guy that knows nothing about fruit.  Mine produced fruit first time this year, and it was really tart.  I let the fruit set a long time.  They are almost purple.  Even the birds aren't eating them.

Jakes mace gives a lot of false information on his videos.  Most people that know how to garden in AZ consider him a complete clown.

My wife was born in Nicaragua and lived there until 5, when she moved to NYC.  When she lived there her favorite fruit was jocote.  Hard to find, but, I finally got one.  I want to general what is it's general hardiness.   I have a large vaulted ceiling that leads to my backyard, so, I could keep it potted.  But, would prefer to plant with protection if possible.

I originally wanted to buy some of these trees.  U liked the ornamental value and of course, I like to eat fruit.  Lately I have heard many comments that the fruit lack flavor and are insipid, ie. Not worth growing for fruit.  Any advice?  Any have seeds or plants that more flavorful/sweet?  Thanks.

I have one growing and this is the first year that it flowered.   Thank you very much for the post, now I will eagerly await the fruit.
I was told that the fruit was too small to be commercially viable.

I may just hold off for a while and try some different grapefruit carieties.  I had oro blanco once and it wasn't my favorite.  Might try some different pummelo's, too.
I have eaten a fair amount of keraji and I really like them.  I kind of agree on the clem yuzu.  Pretty sour.

Ok, maybe what I should be asking is, is it worth the struggle to find seeds for this apparently rare variety of a sweet grapefruit, or, are there other, more easily attainable sweet grapefruit hybrids out there that I should maybe consider.  If bloomsweet is the best of the bunch, then I will just keep looking.

Citrus General Discussion / Bloomsweet
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:51:35 PM »
When I lived in Hampton, VA, zone 8a, I got the bug for cold hardy citrus.  With the helping of Gaylord in VA Beach, I was amassing a very nice colection.  I had changsha mandarine and a limequat in the ground.  I had keraji madarin, satsuma mandarin, bloomsweet, clem yuzu, Sanbokan lemon, ichang lemons in pots and was scoping for places to plant them in my yard.  If I could have found kishu mandarin in VA, I would have been a very happy camper.
Well, life did a turn around and after 7 years in VA, I left for AZ in 2012.  I had to leave all my citrust behind and start a new.  I was so invested in this point in cold hardy citrus, that I wanted to regrow all my favorite's out.  To my great sadness , I quickly found out only kishu mandarin and owari satsuma mandarin could be purchased in AZ.
So, over the past 5 years, I started a one man campaign to beg wherever I could to get or pay for the remaining trees through seeds.
One note is that I decided to leave out limequat and ichang lemon.
Well, I am happy to report that I am almost whole again.  With my clem yuzu and keraji recently sprouting, and from the past couple years, I know have the complete list.. ..except for bloomsweet.

So that leads me to a question, should I just up on bloomsweet?  Unlike all the other citrus I listed, I have never actually tried a bloomsweet.  Was growing it mostly for cold hardiness.
I have heard mixed reviews on the flavor of bloomsweet, with some saying it is insipid.  Also, I have seen some interesting grapefruit seeds on ebay for some sweet grapefruit and thought maybe I should just give them a try.
Any recommendations?

Looking for either seeds or seedlings of this shrub.  Of course, looking for a variety with best quality fruit.  Do they need 2 to germinate?

Looking to buy either seeds or preferably seedling of spondias purpurea. Apparently,  it was my wife's favorite fruit when she lived in nicaragua.   If there is a dwarf variety, even better, as it will have to stay potted.

Citrus General Discussion / Sending seeds/fruit
« on: December 12, 2016, 11:49:52 PM »
I wanted to ask millet if it is legal to send seeds and fruit.  I thought I had read an article where the ban on sending seeds was lifted, as it was shown citrus greening could not be transferred through seeds.
Also, I did not think there was ever a ban on mailing citrus fruit.  Sending fruit is actually my preferred way of sending seed.
Just wanted to be completely clear on this, so no one makes a mistake.
