Leaning papaya
« on: September 27, 2022, 06:23:05 PM »

I know it’s a concern when papayas lean, especially young. I think this is wind or sun related.

Should I add a stake and haul it over?

This is a male so it won’t hold fruit if I’m not mistaken?

If it is a male very unlikely to ever make a fruit. Sometimes rarely they can make a fruit so this is an ornamental and wouldnt be carrying fruit.

You do need a male for pollination of true females though, right?

Turned out fine. Also this is what happens if you top a papaya at chest height. Frost did it, not me! Sadly, this turned out to be a male. :(

Try planting the hybrid papaya seeds from alohaseeds.com. They are "feminized" which means produced from a female forced to produce pollen, therby making all seeds be either female or hemaphrodite, almost no chance of any male plants from these seeds. The commercial growers can't ber spending effort growing male plants so that is what they use. I've grown several hundred and never got a male. My favorite is Red Lady, even folks who thought they didn't enjoy papaya like the flavor, very nice red flesh.

I somewhat regret not waiting longer to see if these were male or female. It's such a hog of a papaya now I don't have the heart to take it out. I was watching hummingbirds flying in the middle hitting the flowers, and the flowers smell like fruit loops. I think it'll stay as an ornamental. There's a brewery in the same parking lot so I highly doubt I'd get any fruit off of it anyways if female... Customers would drunkenly steal the fruit.

I originally purchase Sunrise & Waimanalo seeds from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Seed Bank.  They are mainly hermaphrodite.  Sunrise, aka strawberry papaya, is very sweet with no musk smell.  I highly recommend it

Thought about it, the way it branched out is cool, just hard to get a plant with a nearly 2" trunk that's ready to go here in CA.
