Recommend Copper Fungicides?
« on: September 07, 2024, 03:08:37 PM »
I contacted my Extension about anthracnose on my mango tree (zone is 10a, formerly 9b - Tampa, FL). They recommended cooper fungicide, and said I should alternate between two different brands. However, they said they couldn't recommend brands. When I searched for copper fungicides, pretty much only two brands are coming up: Southern AG and Bonide (Captain Jack). The problem is that Bonide's label has no instructions for mangos. What other brands of copper fungicides do folks use?

Also, on a related note: The Extension also said copper fungicide for bacterial black spot, which I also have - but elsewhere I read fungicide is not useful for BBS (which does make sense, given fungus vs bacteria; on the other hand, the Extension folks are the experts). Anyone have clarity on that?

Anthracnose is really starting to show up where I am. The big box products are ineffective when it gets like this. I'm trying Cueva. I probably won't spray until the daily rains subside. Maybe another month. Unless your new growth is absolutely being destoyed, I would wait

[/Grove.

I may recall that Har Mahdeem uses Cueva at the Truly Tropical Grove.

Serenade, Actinovate and Double Nickle 55 are biological fungicides for those who like organically approved solutions.

Are you concerned only about anthracnose or do you have to manage powdery mildew?
If so you will see suggestions about alternating between copper and sulfur.

I’m not really a mango grower but how about the classic bordelaise, it’s a combination of copper sulfate and calcium carbonate.  Copper sulfate is accepted for organic as well.

I am planning to wait until it stops raining every day. I just need to be proactive and get the supplies now, or I will definitely procrastinate too long. I will look at Cueva, thank you.

So far (8 yrs), I have never seen powdery mildew. I've had a couple years with very few flowers and fruit, which I suppose could have been mildew that got it very early, but I didn't see any. I've had anthracnose and BBS pretty much every year since I moved in, though.

While copper is primarily used as a fungicide it also has bactericidal action. How effective it is varies based on the particular bacterial disease and the copper product. I know that in the citrus industry copper is used to help control citrus canker--another bacterial disease. My understanding is that it is only partially effective at controlling MBBS. I need to learn more myself about what particular products are most effective.

In my experience, extension agents are best viewed as librarians instead of experts. I don't mean to diminish in any way the work they do, but their main function is to help you find information from an expert. For example, the IFAS article about Mango BBS cites Alex Salazar and Gary Zill as primary sources.

Copper oxy chloride works but it can be mutagenic and hurt sperm ( in fruit flys are high concentrations but ao could do that to humans too) so it’s advised to wear protective gear. Copper oxy chloride are sold under many different brands.

If you mention whats the active infredient in the branded products you mention its easier for us to assist with recommendations.

And as Peter said you can use Boreaux mix. Calcium hydroxide and copper sulphate.
You can also use calcium oxide if you cant find hydroxide but when you mix Ca oxide with wate rit will get really hot and create CaHydroxide anyway, but the hear helps to mix the two.
I think calcium carbonate works too but in Italy I have seen them use Calcium hydroxide, often time Cahydroxide is sold in finer powder so easier to get even mix with copper sulphate.

There should be Bordeaux mixes to buy.
