How do you know?
« on: September 09, 2024, 03:54:21 PM »
I've heard that there were batches of Nam Doc Mai #4 grafted by Zill's High Performance Plants that were on dwarfing rootstock. I have a Nam Doc Mai #4 that is growing slower than any of my other varieties.
How would I  know if I scored a dwarfing rootstock? What varieties would it Dwarf?
What would be the best flavored vigorous variety I could graft on it if it can be surmised to be dwarfing rootstock?

I always heard that NDM#4 was a dwarf tree. Are you sure it's the rootstock that's keeping it small and not just the intrinsic growth habit?

slower growing mangos grafted onto turpentine at least I have noticed tend to swell at the base below the graft.
Above the graft it looks skinnier.

Julie trunk, your statement has some visual validation

I've grafted NDM#4 and I believe it grows more slowly independent of the rootstock. I think I got my budwood from Tropical Acres, but I'm not 100% on that.

There could be several confounding factors, but what I'm thinking is that your location is not the best where the ndm is planted.
I noticed a lot of rocks around the tree.

In my neighborhood, that's what we call soil.
