Tropical Fruit Discussion / Russian rototiller vs pork holes
« on: February 28, 2020, 08:39:44 AM »
I restored a vintage russian( soviet) rototiller .Its 60 years old and the original motor is 2 strokes ( kavasaki license) but i changed the motor with a brand new chinese fake honda motor ,7Hp on wich i only paid 70 dollars.
The motor, altough verry cheap its really good and starts verry easy.

Here is the damage, holes made by wild boars or porks did to my land where i planted almonds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Iron pan soil ,tropical rainforest soil
« on: February 10, 2020, 08:50:06 PM »
I found an iron pan ( a type of soil rich in iron) on the river bed near home and i think i can say now that i have real tropical rainforest soil to grow my plants.
Its rich in iron and manganese ,should be verry low ph and off course the color its deep red like the soil of the rainforest.
Its basically iron ore with low ph and low nutrients.

Why i found this tropical soil here its because this iron pan formed where a spring used to flow and that continuous flow of water weathered the soil soo much until it became like laterite.
Just like the rains washed the soil in the tropics until they became red.
Will be adding pictures tomorrow and explain what the iron pan is and how to recognise different minerals in it.

Might not seem much that i found this red soil but i live in a place with alkaline soil and you cant buy such soil like regular  potting soil.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia soil
« on: February 03, 2020, 09:35:24 PM »
Because of my Garcinia humilis seedlings struggle to grow 2 leaves from almost a year of growth ,i started reading on the forum more about the soil requirements.
Most experts say to plant them in slightly acid and fertile soil wich its theoretically black soil just like in the pots of my  seedlings .

2 days ago a friend that struggles to grow mangosteens from seed for years, told me he finally got the secret of growing them- said they need alkaline soil with lots of calcium.

Then i started to google pictures with all types of garcinia species and i found out that all grow in white soil.
Based on that color ,i realise he was true and thats alkaline soil with neutral to high ph and quite poore in nutrients.

Now il be adding gypsum to my seedlings and see if they make a comeback.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Toona Sinensis question
« on: January 22, 2020, 10:04:34 AM »
What could be wrong with this Toona?
Its the only seedling that survived after manny attempts to propagate them from seeds.
On the otther seedlings the ,,needles,,opened into leaves but not on this one.
Its a broad leaf tree and doesnt look like it should be .
Im sure that the seed it came from its Toona Sinensis.
Searching pictures on Google with Toonas germinated didnt showed any result.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lignum nephriticum
« on: January 20, 2020, 08:03:56 PM »
There is a verry interesting reaction that takes place with water thets left to sit for a while in a wodden cup made from Pterocarpus Indicus.
The water becomes red but in sunlight it is fosforescent( has phosphorescence, blue color).
It is called lignum nephriticum wich means kidneywood ,because it is said it cures the kidneys of the one who drinks it.
There might be somme truth to it because ive seen that manny use this concoction to clean their kidneys to pass a drug test.
I never tryed it but i have in mind to line a few small pieces of this wood in a regular oak barrel filled with my homemade distilled moonshine ( alcoholic drink)to get it colored like this and maybe benefit from its health effects too.
More tests needs to be done.
There are also USA native trees that have this water coloring effect like Eysenhardtia Texana,Orthocarpa and Polystachia.
They are all legume trees and Pterocarpus is an Nitrogen fixer but im not sure for the Eysenhardtias.
Eysenhardtias seem to be good for bees/pollinators and cold hardy compared to Pterocarpus .

Ive just bought a pack of limes and this item came with them.
Its a spray for limes but it doesnt work and its logical that fine fibers will block the nozzle verry fast .This is how we fill the planet of garbage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inga pollination question
« on: December 27, 2019, 06:14:56 PM »

Its an unknown specie of Inga and i dont think i can get another one from the same specie.
Would they cross polinate with otther Inga species?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best potting mix for macadamia/ proteaceae?
« on: November 03, 2019, 08:13:47 PM »
What would be a good soil mix for macadamia?
I dont have macadamia but somme related trees,Gevuina and i need to transplant them to bigger pots.
I have perlite,yellow clay,black clay,sandy soil,biochar,simple charcoal , manure and coarse sand.

These proteaceae dont like much phosphates in the soil but Gevuinas are more tolerant of normal levels of phosphates.
Lowet phosphates i can achieve by maintaining a lower ph( acidic) but im also thinking (this is my own idea)to mix somme red iron oxide powder into the soil wich will bind and make the phosphates non available.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse heating invention
« on: October 12, 2019, 06:52:21 AM »
I will start building a central heating on wood for my greenhouse.
The fire place will be outdoor ,near the greenhouse and the stove will be a small rocket stove made from ytong bricks and the stratification chamber will be a stainless steel beer barrel.
The chimney i want to make it also from stainless steel.
Instead of water to move the heat from the stove outdoor inside the greenhouse il use air .The advantage is that air doesnt freeze like water and its not toxic as the antifreeze.
Off course water based heat transfer is more efficient than air heat transfer but somehow i think my air heat transfer will be more efficient than the hydronic.
And here is the idea: because il use air to heat the floor of the greenhouse through pipes ,i can recycle the hot air that rises near the ceiling, and heating it again then store that energy back into the floor.
With water heating you can reuse that hot air near the ceiling.
Another idea is to have a blower fan ,brushless 12-24 volts that for the begining il be driving with a power source.
But later i want to use 15-20 TEGs ( peltiers) to harvest the heat from the chimney and to tranaform it into electric power to drive the fan.
Basically there will be no need for a socket since the fire itself will create enough electric power to drive the fan .
Note that il not be using the exhaust to heat the greenhouse but the air from the greenhouse wich will get heated through the stainless steel beer barrel .So altoigh il have ,,chimneys,, looking pipes in the floor ,there will be fresh air but heated that will pass through them ,not the chimney exhaust.
Later il make a hand drawing and explain it better.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feijoa with iron nails in the pot
« on: October 11, 2019, 03:27:33 AM »
I just moved the 2 feijoas grown from seed into a bigger pot at forum members insistences so that i can move them in the greenhouse when it gets too cold for them.
Initially i planned to keep them outdoor in the ground.
These are the severely chlorotic plants that i treated by mixing iron nails into the potting soil and i also watered with pyroligneous/ hummic acid ,water solution.
The soil in the bigger pot has 30 % biochar( 50-50 charcoal and manure from rotten weeds) ,30% sand and 40% black clay soil.

Citrus General Discussion / Charcoal for citrus
« on: October 08, 2019, 04:38:49 PM »
I found this link about the benefits of using charcoal for citrus trees.https://www.wakefieldbiochar.com/biochar-beats-citrus-greening-disease-and-improves-productivity/

Only 2-5 % charcoal is enough they say and i think it should be washed well first to remove the ash.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Efficient wood stove to heat the greenhouse
« on: September 07, 2019, 11:13:23 PM »
I found this ,,canadian stove,, or Bullerjan stove wich is a free flow and a highly efficient gasification stove just like the ones that work on pellets used for central heating.The bullerjan thogh can use pellets and wood .Aluminum pipes can be conected to the stove pipes and moved outside of the greenhouse in certain situations and this could be usefull to heat a tree near the greenhouse;
Altough i am a fan of rocket stoves i have to say that this its more efficient than the rocket stove;
The design its beautifull ,looking like a Diesel engine.

« on: August 28, 2019, 05:25:09 PM »
This is a nursery in Bulgaria wich it seems it has the best offer in the whole Europe and the prices are more than decent( 3-4 times cheaper than in Romania).
There is the language barrier but using a translator helps while surfing their website.
Lots of authentic cold hardiness info are presented.
Anybody has experience ordering from them?
I tryed this last spring  but i got late reply to my emails and i ordered from romanian shop instead.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nitraria Schoberi
« on: July 15, 2019, 02:21:38 PM »
I just realised that im cloose to somme bushes of Nitraria Schoberi ,the only place in Europe where it grows.
The fruits are edible and said to taste like salty grapes. So i will search it,photograph and taste the fruits, and get somme seeds.
Every bush its protected here and tolerates verry salty soil thats why ,probably, the berries are salty.
