What does Shirokolistvennyi mandarin taste like?
« on: January 31, 2021, 11:13:12 PM »
Two years ago, on a whim, I ordered a Shirokolistvennyi cutting from CCPP. Me, being Russian, thought it would be neat if I got a Russian citrus tree.
I grafted it but it failed. I rooted the rest of it. Last summer, it put out a relatively huge branch off to one side, so I cut it off. I could not just throw the cutting out, so I cut it in two and stuck them into Optisorb in a plastic cup. I taped anther plastic cup on top to maintain humidity. One of the two cuttings is now putting out new leaves.
So now I have two Shirokolistvennyi trees, with another possibly coming soon. But I have no idea what this variety tastes like!
So, has any of you tasted it and if so, how did it taste?

Just ordered one of these myself (not a cutting, but an actual tree. Not sure if it is grafted to PT or Flying Dragon, but I assume so) and will be trying out in my yard in the Portland, OR. area of the US. I am also curious about the flavor. I have read an article online that states the fruit is sweet, is less acid, and is more tart than other Satsumas. I will be sure to update on this thread when am able to get ripe fruit from my tree. A description of it's fruit is listed in this article I found via a Google search:

It tastes like regular satsuma. With a good climate on the sunny side of the tree, the fruits have a rich sweet taste. It is characterized by a more powerful growth and large broad leaves

Frost resistance is similar to other satsums. Probably-7-10C. night freeze with non-critical damage

I finally tasted the fruit this year. It looks and tastes like a lemon but sweeter. It does not look like a Satsuma. Did CCCP send me the wrong cutting?

It seems that way. According to your description, it resembles a Meyer lemon.
