i will have to upload some pics later but first flowering this year:

Plinia asa grayi (which seems to be Myrciaria or Eugenia, definitely not Plinia)

Eugenia azeda

Garcinia sp. "Madruno Lindero" from Jim West

Does anyone else have these species flowering yet in USA?

thanks to the group for any info

Bellamy posted that they fruited Eugenia azeda on their Insta last year! And apparently somebody else did the year before. Here's what they wrote about it, for posterity (and 'cause Insta is a bit stubborn if you don't have an account):

Quote
This was a specie first introduced via seeds back around 2020. This plant is around 3 years old. We are happy to find another specie that will fruit and stay a decent size in a container. This plant is growing in a 1-2 gallon pot.

This is the first time this plant has fruited for us. Joe Hewitt fruited his plant last year in 2023. Others may have fruited this one in the USA as well.

First off, this fruit has a really nice flavor. To me it tasted a lot like a peach. It’s not very sweet, as you can see in the brix test. It is sour, but in a good way. With that being said, I love sour lol. So what’s perfectly sour for me may be too much for someone else. The fruits have a good amount of flesh as well.

Juiciness, texture, and flavor, all remind me of peach. Just think of a sour peach and that’s what this fruit is like. Definitely a worthy plant to have in your rare fruit collection, especially if you are a container grower with limited space. Definitely a winner in my book!

Thanks for sharing this update from Bellamy.  I’m impressed that this fruited at such a small size!  Good thing too as this grows incredibly slowly.  I did notice that mine seems happier in direct sunlight and not much smaller than his, so hopefully I’m only a year away from seeing fruit.

Any idea how old these plants are?

I have a G. sp "lindero" in the ground but my guess is that it is at least 3 or 4 years from flowering.

Do you have any of Jim West's "medruno" growing? Over a decade ago, you sold me a G Madruno with leaves that are long and skinny, maybe 9 inches by an inch and a half, similar to achachairu, and some purple on the petiole. The tree has a weeping habit. It is flowering for the first time. The flower buds haven't opened yet. Some of the flower buds have some purple coloring too. I wonder if maybe it is a Jim West "medruno"?

I have lindero and the leaves are much narrower on the tree in question. I have at least 6 different garcinia species with purple petioles, dulcis, multiple different bumpy madrunos, lindero, and the tree I am trying to identify. I will take some pictures of my tree tomorrow.

I found a video of a medruno tree. Some of the leaves look similar to my tree but some are wider. The viewpoint of the video is from inside the canopy of a huge tree.  The poster of the video states medruno is Garcinia pulvinata in the comments. I had a bunch of medruno seedlings from 2021 but I screwed up by not protecting them during winter. They did not handle a windy drop into the lower 40s while still small. These did not get big enough to compare to the tree I got from Adam.

I think I started my eugenia azeda in 2023. i've since gotten better at labeling. It is still really small and nowhere near flowering. the only thing I have growing slower is eugenia caipora. Excited to see photos if you guys have any. I'll get one of mine this week.
I would like to be the Eugenia King of New Orleans and spread tropical fruit throughout the city starting in the 9th Ward. I'm especially interested in guava and eugenia from around the world and in breeding new varieties by chance, coincidence, and accident.

Some pictures of my garcinia tree I purchased from Adam in 2014ish. Leaves are thinner than most garcinia but are similar to achachairu but obviously not.

I researched my emails and found the seeds were planted about 5yrs ago exactly, during spring of 2020.  So they're not that old at all, i have 3 of about 10 that are flowering now.

some in 15 and some in 25gal pots, I need to step up the ones in 15's now.

the fruit will be for sale once I can get a quantity of it to ship.

The pic of the tree u said I sold to you, i don't recall. But maybe I got seeds from my brasilian contacts..i think, sweet madruno?  I don't remember, but it looks like achachairu a bit to me...but I never really sold achachairu that I remember.

I guess nobody else has the Lindero fruiting yet huh?

Thats great, 5 years for Lindero! I think I got my seeds in 2021. My tree is around 5ft tall.

On my tree, I found the email you sent on 1/7/14:

Quote
Right now I have only one Madruno left  (it doesn't look perfect, but its' quite healthy...about 12 inch tall, in a one gallon) ...it was from a supposedly superior "sweet" type (although ive heard most are pretty sweet)

Leaves do look like achachairu but the coloring and habit are nothing like it. I guess I will see if it is dioecious or not. Flower buds have different shapes so I am hoping it is a hermaphrodite.

if you have achacha, just take the leaves and look at the undersides and you can tell if they're different.

also the top, the mid vein (how prominent, what color) and the marginal veins (spacing, and pattern of layout)

I don't think it is achachairu. I have 5 achachairu in the ground those are basically identical to each other. Achachairu have much lighter green leaves with no purple coloring anywhere. I checked the texture of the green wood on the mystery madruno and it is bumpy, as are my other madrunos.  Achachairu has smooth green wood. Maybe it is a madruno x achachairu cross or just a doppelganger. Madruno is widely used as a generic name to add confusion to the matter, sapote of the garcinia genus. I was hoping to narrow it down. If it ends up dioecious, trying to find budwood or additional seeds of the same line.

My e. Azeda started flowering little less than a year ago. No fruit set so far, it doubled in size this last year. It's about 5ft tall. Any g. Lindero I have are still small and just starting to branch. Hopefully my g. Medruno from Jim West makes flowers soon I have about 5 in the ground and my largest one is 8 or 9ft behind my. Azeda.

Thanks for posting the G. medruno pic. I will need to buy some seeds when they are restocked. I had some going but they seem more cold sensitive or wind sensitive than any other garcinia I have grown.

Joel here new member from Deland Fl. I am excited to grow out my Garcinia’s. I got a few from Adam and a few from some other growers. I’m interested to grow the fruit for my kiddos. They are still very young so it will be a little before I have anything to share when it comes to garcinia but I have 10 different varieties of mango that are of good size. Another year or so in those and I will have plenty to share.

Awesome!

My madruno put out flowers that have a stigma but are missing the ovary (Dude looks like a lady). Some do not have the stigma.

Just noticed this on my e. Azeda. It's been flowering a bunch but this is the first fruit to set. Hopefully a bird won't beat me to this one and I'll get to update with a flavor description.

Hey Adam, were you able to graft the special variety of canistel from Oscar at fruitlovers? I think he sent you scions.

Thanks! Just got to try the fruit, I was surprised it wasn't more sour. Felt like I picked it a little early, didnt want the birds to claim it. The flavor was kinda similar to my orange grumichama but more sour. It had a very distinct flavor that reminded me of somthing that I couldn't recall. Overall this one exceeded my expectations, the flavor was sweeter and more complex than I had imagined. No weird bitter or astringent flavor either. Hopefully it begins to pollinate better as it gets older
