Maha "splash" Variegated Maha Chanok (Rainbow Mango)
« on: March 17, 2025, 01:23:08 PM »
pictures coming soon,

I have this variegated Maha chanok  mango seedling that is about 3yrs old by now, and it's showing a very stable pattern that won't fade.

The chances of me getting this seedling seem very slim, check out the backstory...

about 4-5yr ago I drove by my neighbor's house, noticing his mango trees had been ravaged by freezes, showing only rootstock suckers left growing vigorously.
I explained that the rootstock would produce inferior fruit, and take much longer to fruit than a grafted tree of a known variety, and I offered to top work his trees.

with no qualms, he allowed me to proceed with grafting, which resulted in about 7 successful grafts of maha chanok and cogshall scions onto two separate rootstocks.

the trees fruited in about 1yr after grafting, and I had told the owner that I'd like to taste one fruit when it was fruiting.  One day I drove by and knocked on the door to ask if I could take a fruit off the tree, I noticed a few left that were perfectly ripe, and nobody answered the door....being that I had permission and was the one to graft the trees, I took the liberty of taking a fruit.

The fruit was delicious.  I planted the seed in my yard, out in the field and forgot about it.

Years later I noticed the seedling had a faint variegation pattern...I was astounded given the odds of finding a variegated seedling being that I've planted hundreds of seeds without getting one.

Over the years I grafted a few trees as back up and observed the mother to see if the pattern would fade, but it has only grown stronger.

The pattern is not what I'd call striking, but it's got a very nice splashing pattern on the foliage...so I named it Maha "Splash".

I hope to offer a few grafted plants in the future and would love to see how the fruit quality turns out...and if there's any variegation on the fruit.

I will post some pics of the trees very soon.

This is so cool. This is the 2nd time I heard of Maha Chanok seedling having variegation. The first one was from Rich's Mango Garden on youtube.

thank u so much for sharing!  this must be a viral thing, not a chimera!

his looks almost identical, but mine has a little different pattern...but overall I'd say he has same mutation or viral variegation!!!

Im taking some pics tonight hold tight thank u :)

thanks!  i got two big grafted trees and the pattern is very stable and nice, it keeps getting more interesting as the plant ages, which is usually the opposite of what happens when i find a seedling with faint variegation.

The pattern is beautiful, but as i said before definitely not what i would call a striking pattern, as ive seen on other variegated mango varieties.

but hopefully this one has really flavorful fruit, because of the top notch genetics, maha is one of my favorite

Might be worthwhile grafting on to an established fruiting tree to get some flowers and fruit sooner. I'll gladly volunteer some space on my trees for the sake of science.  Wll be interesting to sprout some Splash seeds and see if anything is passed on. I know a few people with variegated Maha seedlings but none have fruited.

That is my plant Rain.  Very cool to see it seems to occur often enough in Maha. Crossing my fingers it's not a virus, lol.

Ohhh so good to see you on the forum too! I've been watching your seedling project. Some of your seedlings blooming in 2 years is amazing. I hope both of the splash Maha make fruits soon 😁

on second thought i believe you are right it’s not a viral variegation, im sure it is a chimera, because the stems emerge looking like candy canes with stripes sometimes.

The one only advantage of growing mango in California is that seedlings bloom very early 😅

pics on an old post of my grafted trees

Very cool the variegation looks stronger than anything on mine. It would so awesome if it produces variegated fruits 😁

thanks Eggo,

I think yours looks about exactly the same so far, your pattern should improve with age, and keep grafting them young!

I made 3 so far, and the mother tree is coming out with crazy new leaves that look really good, I may dig it up here soon...

i wanna sell one tree here soon to establish a value, if anyone is interested keep an eye on my site...

I just have one to sell soon...probably in the 450-500 range...because the purchaser would be the only other person to have it besides me.

a very strong pattern on this small grafted tree, I’m in the phase of increasing my stock, with hopes of releasing this before 2027.

the best thing to do, would be to wait for it to fruit, to confirm whether or not the fruit is variegated and if it tastes anything like the mother tree (maha chanok)

coming along nicely, the pattern just keeps getting better...I got my rootstocks in gear, and grafting them now, trying to have them ready for sale ASAP, it would be really nice to have them by xmas, but spring of 2026 more likely.  I only have about 5 now, including the mother tree, I need over 50 before I think of selling any.  I have about 38 rootstocks coming, but my grafting success is about 50-60% at best.  Water intrusion to the scion seems to be what gets me, I need to wrap better or something, jabos are easier for me.

Funny how this look could be worth something to some people.  Me and my ignorance would be on this forum trying to figure out what nutrient to apply to correct the pattern on the leaves.  Love the skate videos by the way. Keep shredding the park.
