South/Central Florida Cold Fronts
« on: November 07, 2021, 08:25:42 AM »
We woke up to the first what-we-call-cold morning of the fall/winter season, but it feels great!  59 in Deerfield Beach/Boca Raton.  We can use this thread to track and comment on our cold fronts.  Hopefully we eventually see some nights in the 40's to get all the fruit trees blossoming, including lychees.

40s are great, but hopefully we don't see any 20s.

Yes, let's not wish it too cold here. My ultra tropical plants could use a mild La Niña winter.

Finally, first cold front of December last night.  61 this morning, and should be cooler tonight.

Brrrrrrrrrr.        41.5 degrees here at 7 this morning in Lakeland, FL.  Hate to say it but with all the panicles here, I am not sure I want to see it get any colder this winter here.

it was 54 here this morning at 6:00.  (My sister said 19 in Richmond, VA.  Now that's real cold.  Her mango trees are dead!  Nah, she doesn't have any.)

The lowest temp that I had here in (urban) north Tampa was 48ºF. overnight during the last three days.

So fortunately it seems like we got a reprieve for now.

53 this morning, and we may go down to the high 40's Monday night.  Then another cold front coming up within the next 10 days, but February and March are forecast to be warmer than average.  I think our mango trees are getting what they need.

Dropped to 49 last night here. Quite an abrupt change (around 80 something in the daytime), certainly should stimulate mango flowering. More cool nights forecast too. =)

Doesn't help with germinating seeds though.

I've been noticing my Cempejack seedling with lots of weeds around them tend to fair better than those in weed free pots. Same with Marangs... so far no damage from coldest night, last night, at 51F.

49 degrees at 7:00am.  I put my soursop (3-gal) in the garage last night just to make sure it wouldn't lose any leaves.

39 was the lowest in NE Orlando last night.
I brought inside only rooting fig cuttings. Jackfruit seedlings don't show any issues.

34 here on the panhandle last night. A light frost was on the roof tops. Had my potted mangos in a unheated greenhouse and no damage. I also have a potted lychee that has blooms starting and no damage(unprotected). Lychee and longan seedlings are doing great with no damage and no protection. Avocados Oro Negro, Brodgon, and Sir Prize all unharmed. Eventually I'll have to cover and protect if it gets much colder but so far things are doing great.

Post said South/Central Florida and I felt left out  :P Lol.

Good to hear from you.  You're welcome to comment anytime even though I tend to think in terms of in-the-ground mangos, lychees, etc., in South and Central Florida.

Thanks, I've lurked on here for over a year now and learned so much. I think my bloom times for mangos and lychees will be a bit earlier because of the temps but I still keep tabs on what is happening in down by you. Maybe one of these days I can move to at least 9b.

9b seems like it could be the ideal zone.  Our winters in 10a/b are getting too warm!

The I-10 corridor is forecast to go below freezing tonight. I suppose everyone here is battle hardened and prepared.  8)

I could give up lychee and mango to replace with Marang.
