Looks like Diptera // long legged fly. Probably beneficial similar to a Mayfly. Not a plant pest.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Seed Weevil In Kona
« on: April 03, 2025, 02:17:53 AM »
Last year I was buying Mangos from small Kona growers to acquire fresh seed for rootstock and pig out on delicious Kona Mangos. The ones from Kailua Kona proper (3 different places)  75lbs total had 25% damage from the seed weevil. Keitt and Haden. The ones gifted from a friend in Mauna Lani (Brooks Late) were clean 0%. As far as I know the Mango Seed Weevil couldn't care less re. cvs. I am guessing this is a common problem in Kailua Kona during harvest season due to the close proximity of trees and rotten fruit left on the ground.? It is a good sized  1/4" beetle and a pretty good flyer. Some emerged ones were buzzing my kitchen where my seeds were drying until I caught on to the problem. Weird how they don't really affect the fruit quality.

I have run into 6'' branches with my tractor and it stops the tractor. Green Avo wood is tough.  I'd cut it off below the break and look for weird colors and insect tunnels if there are none it probably got twisted and weakened by the wind.  If you see strange things keep cutting till you get clean wood and seal it. Avo makes excellent firewood burns very cool.

Mangos have very soft wood and are easy targets for beetles. A stumped tree struggling to regrow even more so. The sap is a sign of boring and a defense mechanism .There is a  Mango Borer //Batocera rufomaculata  that killed a 4 foot tree of mine. You might want to consider spraying Sevin on the trunk to stop further damage. Sevin (carbamate) is very effective at killing beetles.

5
Mites will cause that look as well/ they proliferate in dry conditions. A heavy watering might help. Broad Mites/ 2 Spotted SMites/ get a magnifying glass and take a look.

I am not clear on if it has ever flowered and if so was it a little or a lot. If it not setting fruit after flowering there could be many reasons.
Lack of H20/ too much H20 / wind/ fungus/ not hot enough/ too much shade/ nutrient issues/ no pollinators/ etc etc.

How tall is the tree? When was it planted in the pot? if the trunk is less than 3 inches at the base forget growing any fruits. After 2ys of growth it should be OK to allow fruiting.

Mango Loa Project is on the dry side of Kauai, he's put a ton of effort into a high density orchard. If I remember right he's working off of a grant on leased land. If he is able to keep them properly irrigated the only worries will be rats and birds.

Same family as Coffee B Borer, a single female lays 10 or more eggs 90% of the larva are female a single male impregnates the females and dies never seeing the light of day. Females emerge pregnant, do the math. Bostrichid Beetles are horrible little buggers that spread like wildfire under the right conditions. CBB has badly impacted the Haw'n coffee industry

Tropical Fruit Discussion / North Hilo / Hamakua Mango Trees
« on: March 23, 2025, 01:41:43 PM »
I am rounding out my collection of Mangos that will do well here in Kalopa and had the pleasure of visiting Lani at she and Tim's Tropical Abundance Nursery near Paipaikou to pick up a couple Kuini trees. Lan'i is focusing on Mango cv's that do well in wetter tropical climates plus mangifira Lalijiwa, odorata, rubropetala and casturi , she even has her own creation made from budwood from a legendary tree in Hilo she calls Iwalani.
Successfully growing Mangos on the North Hilo/ Hamakua coast has it's challenges but can be done at the right elevation= sea level to 1500.
Tropical Abundance Nursery can be found at www.tropicalabundance.com. 808 987 8126

Coffee is stupidly easy to grow from seed, you are better off buying fresh parchment, no way of knowing how old green coffee is. Just like any large seeded plant the viability decreases pretty rapidly. The birds eat the skin off the cherry on mine and the seeds fall and grow like weeds.

She is right covid is no joke, for some people it results in a low grade long term infection that is life altering. Getting vaxed is a personal choice but it is real and can be really bad. I chose not to be vaxed and am glad I did, but I don't spend much time around large groups of people. We won't know for decades the long term effects of the "experimental" covid vaccine.

Bigger is better 1yr is about the right age for rootstock/ the whole grafting technique requires practice. Cleft grafts are a good place to start. The success depends primarily on bud wood selection all else being equal. I keep my newly grafted trees in shade from 10AM to 2PM if it is sunny and cover with the little baggies with a removable zip tie. After 4 wks you will know, once the bud wood turns brown it is over/ lop it off and try again.
You will get better results in spring and summer/ early fall.

Coside is one product// Badge X2 Copper Hydroxide really sticks. It is all about timing,  spray upon panicle emergence and then 2wks later and then after set.. Azoxystrobin actually is more effective // trade name Heritage SC. not cheap but works ,systemic fungicide works on PMildew as well.
Just follow the directions, use a sticker for best results drench the entire tree.

Citrus General Discussion / Coconut Rhino Beetle
« on: March 19, 2025, 12:16:48 AM »
You folks in Fla might want to be aware of this literal monster beetle. It came into Hawaii on military transport and is killing trees on Oahu it is spread in mulch. Hawaii Dept Of Ag is waging a good fight here but better to keep it out if possible. The crowns die back and once you see that it is too late.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: huanglongbing disease

Didn't think of that, I guess if you have uninfected plant mtl and keep it screened that would work. There is a millionaire in Kohala Estates who has a giant screened poly house with mangos inside. A few years ago I tried that with my cannabis it kept every thing out except the 2 spotted spider mite. Funny how $ solves many problems. Really sad how modern agriculture is increasingly moving indoors.

The plant hopper (asian citrus psyllid)that spreads it carries the bacterium. Control the plant hopper and control the problem good luck with that, homopterans are impossible to eradicate difficult to control. Luckily modern science has gene editing technology that should be of help. Only problem is that means cutting and chipping susceptible trees and planting genetically modified ones, developing new resistant cvs is going to take decades. I wonder if the Chinese have done any work on this. It's their darn disease.

Kinda wondering if any hobbyists on this forum has encountered this in their  backyards yet.  AKA / Citrus Greening Disease
Wondering if maybe USDA / Fla. St, Dept of Ag  is stepping up to save the industry.
Pretty sure death nell there for Fla Citrus.   next Ca... headed to Hawaii zero doubt.
Maybe contact congressional reps and demand exemptions to USDA /UDAID cuts to research and plant quarantine.

The GA rate is .15g in 500ML of H20 wet the leaves up to the point of dripping. I did 2 applications 3wks apart and it switched off the flowering rut my small trees were in.  Rapoza is a cv from what I can tell is easily triggered to flower. I have a large 10 yr old tree here that flowers year round. It does it's regular big Feb/March bloom but the slightest stress from a dry spell to a cool snap makes some dormant buds go again.
