You may do air layering with large branches in a good condition it will root out for some species of tree. It would take longer time as well the time to care for it in a pot before you can plant it in the ground, than a smaller air layered branch. You May even make multiple air layering on a large tree branch in some species of tree.

However, I do not recommend do air layering on a single main trunk of a tree at the base. Even "a couple feet up". You can web search for" how to kill a tree by girdling", then you will understand.
1 , It may kill your tree. 2, If it roots out, then it not over yet. You have potted it up and put in bright shade/shade, protect from strong wind ... elements and wait until it fully rooted actively growing in pot, before you can plant it in the ground. 3, A newly air layered just cut off, it has very weak roots. It does not have enough energy to support the entire tree with many branches, that is why usually we would trim off extra branches and remove some of the leaf. An air layered large trunk with many branches is not easy to secure in a pot. If you let it move around, then it would damage young roots.

What I would do is look for good branches and make more than one air layering .... These videos are some of large size branches that I did with other species of trees.

More # number of air layering would give you more chance getting a good tree or many trees for back up.  Wishing you have a safe and fun with your project.

I grow my Monstera deliciosa as ground cover as well let it grow up on a large tree. It like to grow in places where it gets good amount of sunlight for fruit production. In this video you will get more information of what I mean by good sunlight.               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpaYcdb4bN0

In this video explain both Monstera deliciosa and Monstera borsigiana are vines and it can be climber as well as crawler.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXXGPS2oICc

your plant in photo show it is growing direction of the light which is somewhat its growing away from your avocado tree. It is good that you don't let it grow up your tree. I let my grow up big trees but in check. I don't let it grow wild out of control. As long you have space, soil with good nutrients, light, air circulation...etc. elements of what both of your plant's needs, then no problem if they grow side by side.

Make sure you grow the correct Id Monstera deliciosa and not Monstera borsigiana. Don't waste your time with Monstera borsigiana for fruit production.  Here are reviews fruit taste of both varieties.

Monstera Borsigiana Albo Variegata Fruit Taste.     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yucIGIkITA8

When both varieties Monstera deliciosa and Monstera borsigiana young, they look somewhat very similar.  At the time they mature, then you will note the differences between them.  This video show both varieties were collected and grown from seeds by me.      https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5aRjG9xFZ3A
More video how you ID them.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBprGjzCSGg

More than one way to ID them. However, one of the most important keys is the "ruffles"  . Mature Monstera deliciosa has large waves on the back of its leaf where petiole joint with leaf. This video would give you some examples when it shows "ruffles"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xkcJOtwbck

My question is when you said, "I bought as a small quart size tissue culture start". Most of the time green form Monstera deliciosa seedlings sold were grown from seeds.  Where did you buy it and how do you know it was tissue cultured plant?

How old is your Monstera? Did you make any propagation from it?

At 15:25 to the end of video you will see the size of a tree. This one still  young .Web search may have information of other larger tree .   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHBbUr4ZZEw

10
The most significant difference I notice is my Deliciosa likes to crawl and become bushy, where my Albo Borsigiana much rather grow upright and climb.

Not really ...both are vines so they can be whatever they like to be to reach out for sunlight/searching for food. Examples here in video    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXXGPS2oICc

11
My understanding is that borsigiana can exist as both full green and variegated, with the former being a common plant sold in stores. Supposed biggest difference with the full green borsigiana and deliciosa is the former has much less pronounced fenestrations and overall smaller leaves.

Yes it has variegation as well the green form. Leaf size, fenestrations can be varied when grow under low light conditions, different environments and age of the plant.

I used the top of good, sweet variety that I bought from store for propagation. I have learned from Mother Nature that if you remove some of the tip leaves, somewhat similar to damaged it, then you would get more plants out of it.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH4CTjrljAc

This one is amazing variety from Vietnam. The fruit size is about similar size of a large pineapple with stunning crown.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0khPW7yh1xo

I have not yet taste tested the long neck avocado " Popenoe" "Wilson Popenoe" fruit yet . However , based on photos and information provided over 90% it is not the same as Bơ 34 . Bơ 34 has darker green , bumpy skin fruit. The taste very close to a Hass avocado. Thanks for your feedback.

I use kitchen waste for organic fertilizer. It can take some time to break down in the soil. These are some stuffs that I would add in including making biochar.      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it0X_WH8scA

"Know anyone up north near Sac?"

xesoteryc,

I do not know anyone that has good collection near Sac. If you can do some homeworks, take time to look for honest, knowledgeable seller/collector, then it does not have to be near Sac. Most of them may ship plant to you. I know getting plant near your location for better acclimate, but Winter is already here at Northern California. You want to wait for warmer months to get the plant.  Hope you all find good healthy true variety dragonfruit plant. Happy Planting to You All.

greenerpasteur,

I bought a bag full of velvet tamarind. It was spongy sour. I learned from the seller, that they do not grow the tree. Fruit was harvested every 3 years in the jungle, then come the process of how to make it ripen before it can be on the market.

There was no jamun for sell in the market when I was there. Strangely, I found jamun trees loaded with fruits in the park as shown at the end of video. I did not eat any of those fruits, but I ate jamun before and I like it more than velvet tamarind.

Happy Thanksgiving to All of You.

Have you try bon bon (lazones)? Is it as good as I remember it?

It's funny apple is priced similar to lazones and crystal guava is so cheap.

One of my favorite memory of VN is buying a bagful of sugar apple. Me and my dad finish the entire bag. We both wished we bought 2 bags. It's that good!

Yea bon bon is the best if you buy it fresh. The Thai variety is very popular at this time, but the season already over end of July. My review bon bon in this video with other fruits. The best tasting guava I came across also in this video.   Sugar apple is the best even they have atemoya there, but most local like sugar apple over the atemoya.
