Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees I gave up on
« on: December 31, 2022, 08:07:32 AM »
Soursop will be gone. Any temps below 40f , it drops leaves and fruits. Trying mountain soursop instead.
Everbearing mulberry is gone. Too tiny and messy. Will keep thai and
austirkey.
Many unproductive figs are gone.
Kaffir lime tree will be gone. No use for it in my house.

In case you really like Soursop, I have one that did not loose leaves each of the time I get 36 degree or less, while the others all turn brown and drop leaves.  I will be able to share scions in the future.  For now, I am waiting to see how the fruit tastes.
Interesting soursop you have!  Hopefully it taste good!

I live in your area.
Persimmons, pineapples, sweet potatoes, mulberries, star fruit grow pest free without much care.
Guavas are tough too.

I added a little of kaffir lime juice to salmon dish  without tasting it first. Big mistake... Its not like any other limes. Its strong and bitter. I am not sure how people like it but i am ready to cull my tree since i have no use of fruits.

I have read the same about anise smell. Mexican or mexican hybrid avocados should have that smell and usually they are cold hardy. I tested Poncho leaves, very strong anise  smell.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Kumquat yield

Which one is bigger than most others, really round, and really sweet? I got a meiwa and it's oblong and not as sweet, but I'm not sure if it's because of a first year issue or plant mix up

You probably have nagami. They are not sweet. My meiwa was a pencil thick and already produced sweet fruit.

I grow only meiwa  but tried nagami too. Meiwa is sweeter and can be picked up green as well, still sweet. My 7 gal is producing non stop. I like it!

Some of them need a second tree. I had one and it was mature, had beautiful flowers every spring and not a single fruit set. Friend of mine purchased unknown variety in a small pot and it produced fruits on the second year.
I feel like trying growing them again but afraid i will end up with non fruiting one.

This storm was very slow moving and kept dumping tons of water for hours before it left any area. Ever in Orlando we see streets flooded that never happened before with any other storms.

I recently planted taiwanese pink guava that looks like on your picture. Plant those seeds! My white asian guava fruited on the second year from seed.

I will be able to report on my purchase from him maybe next year, but i would not ever buy anything else from him due to so many mismatched varieties.
It looks like he lists all hard to find varieties knowing people will pay big money for them....

I am not a citrus expert, but many years ago an orange seed was planted in my yard and after 10 years it produced perfect sweet oranges.

If grown from seed, purple sugar apples are not always give purple fruit. Pictures on etsy look like seedlings, not airlayered or grafted.

There are might be different types. I have two varieties and they don't have thorns at all. I still grafted it on osage.

I have male and female that i grafted on osage orange hoping i will like them. This year it fruited and it's a keeper for me. Consistency of a chewy fig with easy to chew seeds taste of a very sweet watermelon.
My scions came from fruitwood nursery

Hi all,
Please help me to pick a mango variety that:
Small to medium size tree,
Great bacterial/fungal resistance
Taste great when firm
Fiberless
Taste wise classic is fine
Have greater chance to survive in winters (will protect it to some point)

So far looks like i narrowed it fown to:
Pickering
Cogshall
Edgar
Glenn

I appreciate your professional opinion!!

I bought a tree from him that will be able to confirm maybe next year. We might not like his prices or size of trees but he is not a scam. He is using the same name for at least 10 years, sells on ebay, etsy, his own website, has youtube channel and Instagram.

I bought an airlayered tree from his etsy shop this year. Tree is smaller than on the picture, needed some careful care for a while, very expensive for that kind of value, but not a scam..

Jan's best is an everbearing type that is slightly bigger fruit than other everbearing mulberries. I purchased it from her. It is definitely not similar to thai dwarf i got from fruitscapes.
