Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2024 FL Mango Season
« on: February 11, 2024, 12:21:48 PM »
Finally! Seven years after planting the seed, one of my Pickering Seedlings is flowering!

The tree is about 8' tall, got set back by the freezes a couple years ago, but actually stood strong during Hurricane Ian:

Galatians522, no idea, unfortunately--I just remember they were thornless. Was surprised nothing got to them before me--I did cover them with an organza bag once I discovered them. They were already darkening up then.

Bought a couple plants from Walmart last year and forgot about them, to the point where I ran over one with the lawnmower. The other survived in some overgrown weeds and rewarded me thus:

Oolie, yes, a few times. But never more than two sprout out, and one has always been sickly and died. But definitely a separate hatchling.

If anyone buys bulk Yangmei seeds and wants to sell, say 5, I'd be interested if the price is reasonable. Thanks, and thanks for offering these, Jaboticaba45!

bovine421,  LOL!

I am not aware of any future Mango Tasting events here, but certainly welcome one! My luck, we will be on vacation when one takes place😜

Regardless, if we avoid freezes and frosts and my Coconut Cream Seedling holds fruit again, I'm eager for your and your wife's feedback on taste, and want only honest answers😊

Great video, thanks, Greg A! It's always cool to see drastic action taken that I'd be too scared to do (e.g., sawing off the tops of those trees).

I have done no research on grafting avocados, but recently planted some Walmart Florida seeds to graft onto.

Can grafting be done on trees way younger than what spaugh is doing in his orchard? I planned on doing cleft grafts, and planned on doing that this summer, when the seedlings would only be ~6 months.

We were supposed to go down to 38° here with a wind chill of 30°. I was surprised to learn wind chill and "feels like" temps matter not to plants. What affects them is actual temperature.

That being said, I got to practice covering some stuff, just because the way weather forecasts can be off and that was some cold air up north.

I used 6' tall bamboo stakes and wrapped them in frost cloth. Should we have been forecast to freeze, my plan would be to place "candle heaters" in the covered shelter.

Maybe with the bigger trees, I would try a similar setup, but without being able to cover the tops of the tall ones, hope the rising warm air from the candle heaters would help some? Hopefully I'll never need to experiment with that.

Per my car's thermostat, the lowest I got here was 42°.

Flowering ones that are mature enough to hold fruit:
Pickerings three

Sugarloaf

Coconut Cream Seedling

Ice Cream

Flowering but in ground less than a year:
Coconut Cream

Florigon
Haden
Fairchild
Madame Francis

Hoping for:
Seedling Pickering (x2)

Seedling Lemon Meringue

Not sure how to categorize our Nam Doc Mai #4

Hoping this weekend's cold won't do any harm . . .

roblack, the Cedar Bay Cherry seeds are similar to Suriname Cherry. The Fruit of Mystery seeds are small (as apparently is the fruit when compared to Cedar Bay Cherry). They were almost like sunflower kernels. If your tree fruits and has tiny fruits with tiny seeds, maybe? But if it's a Cedar Bay Cherry, it'll be easy (easier?) to tell.

brian was kind enough to share some seeds (thank you!), and I encountered my first mystery--what is seed and what is vermiculite?🤣 I believe I planted all that was sent, and hopefully didn't plant vermiculite, as I'm not interested in growing that. Thanks again, brian!

"Criollo" Cacao seeds received (one had even germinated), many thanks, Lance!

shot, do you think you'll have Mangos available this year?

I wouldn't do anything but let it settle in and see what it does on its own. Besides, I recently discovered that the "pruning just below a node to get staggered limbs" trick doesn't always work. Tried that on a seedling and the tree kicked out a bunch of shoots all originating at the previous node. It was as if I cut right above that node.

Hi, Kaz, no, not yet. It did fruit last year, but I was out of town when they ripened and either birds or rodents got them. The fruits were small and short.

I'm tempted to cut the larger trunk off entirely to only let the smaller ones grow. I'm not familiar with mulberry tree pruning for size. Nor sure if I should leave all the side branches, either. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Evaluation of Shipped Mango Tree
« on: January 04, 2024, 07:23:33 PM »
I'd be unhappy receiving a tree in that condition. I hate buying plants sight unseen for that reason.

That being said, I think it should heal okay. I would not cover it with anything. I have a seedling that suffered a similar looking injury when roofers were throwing debris off my roof and a piece of metal sliced into the trunk. I initially tried to buddy tape the sliced piece back in place, but the piece rotted. I removed the piece and the buddy tape and sprayed the wound with Liquid Copper Fungicide. It seems to be healing fine.

Here's a pic of it from October (the wound occurred in May)

Good luck and keep us posted on the tree's progress!

I'd like no repeat of the back-to-back freezes of January 2022😳
