Citrus General Discussion / Re: Seedling Meiwa Kumquat fruiting
« on: February 04, 2021, 05:15:58 PM »
Tried one yesterday and it tasted just like a Meiwa. The fruit had a lot of seeds (6) and I got scratched by a thorn retrieving it. Still, I'm very happy with the tree!

Rob, did you do anything to protect your trees? I didn't, besides bringing sensitive potted plants inside, and am kinda regretting it now.

Supposedly only hit 36° here in the Cleveland part of Florida, but there was significant ice on the car and frost all around. Was gonna ask if a (hopefully light) frost--or is it frozen dew, per bovine421?--will harm exposed mango trees and their leaves and unopened flowers and small jackfruit seedlings, but I guess I'll be able to answer that myself in a couple weeks . . . I think all my papayas are ruined?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Where to put Barbados Cherry plants?

Thanks for the responses! I think I'll put them by the Night-Blooming Jasmines, as that spot seems to afford them the most room. I'll make more of an effort to water them if necessary. achetadomestica, are yours in full sun? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to put Barbados Cherry plants?
« on: January 29, 2021, 12:09:32 PM »
I recently picked up a couple Barbados Cherry plants. The spot I had in mind for them gets the most sun in the yard, and it's also one of the driest spots. The 3 Night-Blooming Jasmine plants in that area spend many a day thirsty and drooping. I'm not the most diligent waterer. Could the Barbados Cherries go in that spot or should I look for another spot with a little more shade and moisture? Thanks!

" . . . the fruits will be the test of this method of farming."

Thanks for another great video, Satya! Do you have a plan in place to objectively test the fruits? Thanks!

I should pay better attention when I walk around my yard . . . discovered last week that one of my Meiwa seedlings has fruit. Had no idea it even flowered. The seedling is either 3 or 4 years old. Excited to try the fruit.

The tree itself had a recent growth spurt, bringing with it some serious thorns.

Thanks, roblack, I myself don't always know what variety of fruit I'm eating, but certainly know what I like, ha! What's its growth habit been like? How tall is it? Thanks!

Great thread, roblack! How tall is the Jackfruit seedling? Was the seed from a particular variety? Thanks!

I've read geese eat grass. I'd actually like to get a couple because I think they're neat. They can be loud, from what I hear.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / braconid wasp cocoons on papaya leaves
« on: January 10, 2021, 06:34:20 PM »
We found these on the underside of a couple Strawberry Papaya leaves, and after a little help from an interwebs search, discovered they are the cocoons of a beneficial braconid wasp.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these bananas Manzano bananas?
« on: December 28, 2020, 08:07:42 PM »
These were from a fruit stand far far away and they were unlabeled but I bought them anyway not expecting much but they ended up having a fantastic apple taste to them and when I looked up "small bananas that taste like apple" the name Manzano comes up but the pictures of Manzano don't kinda look like these at least not to me so I was wondering if these are Manzano or not and if not does anyone maybe know what they might be?

My two trees are just finishing up fruiting also. The past 3 years my trees seem to
start late around July and fruit until December or January
And the cold doesn't damage the fruit? The tree is a seedling from seeds I got from you

I had thought they were more of a summer fruit? Happy to have this bunch ripening. The upper 30s/low 40s from a week or so ago didn't seem to affect them, and I'm hoping the ~40° temperature tonight doesn't harm the fruit so close to being ripe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Stake Mango Tree Branches or No?
« on: November 13, 2020, 06:19:48 PM »
What will happen when you need more stakes and taller stakes...

I figured the fruit would droop down and be easier pickins, ha!

I've now restaked the limbs post-Eta, but am honestly thinking of letting them be if the stakes are blown over again--I'm thinking that's how some mango trees get the long horizontal branches? I have over 20 other mango trees in the ground, and these two are the only ones drooping. . . .

Thanks for all the input, everyone!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Stake Mango Tree Branches or No?
« on: November 12, 2020, 06:55:47 PM »
I have two mango trees (grafted Neelam and Coconut Cream seedling) whose new branches droop and twist and spin in all sorts of directions. My attempt to remedy this has been to stake the branches in the direction I'd like them to grow (see attached pic). I suck at this task, and with TS Eta bringing the winds, the stakes gave up and now the branches are flopping around like the arms of a drugged octopus.

My question: should I just let them flail about? Do they eventually right themselves or do they continue to grow at odd angles and directions and eventually need to be pruned off? Thanks!
