California pomegranate fruit split what could be the issue

My brother in Coronas wants to know what went wrong. All his pomegranate split like this one where you can see the seeds before becoming ripe. The ants are having quite a feast

I always heard they split from uneven watering.
So, if you water everyday. You have to keep watering everyday.
Or, if you do once a week, you must continue once a week.
