south FL avocado - super hass complement
« on: May 08, 2023, 07:00:23 PM »
I have a super hass tree (about 3 years old - no flowers/fruit yet). I am intending on maintaining it up to 15x15, which seems reasonable given what I've read about it. Since I can only eat so many avocados, I'd like to graft another variety to it that fruits at a different time to extend my harvesting window. Though I'd like to also select a tree that I can maintain within my desired size target. Black skin is preferred but not necessary. Any recommendations?

Look up Oro negro.
For a while there were several posts on the forum on the variety.
Also Carlos on the forum has a web site with some good information on his experiments with several varieties in FL.

I almost bought a nice Super Haas tree that had fruit on it a couple of years ago, but I realized I didn't have room for another tree and passed on it. The guy who was selling the tree had one in the ground in his yard and it was full of fruit. Nice trees, nice fruit!

I've heard Super-Hass has uneven ripening issues in South Florida.  I bought a Carmen Hass instead for Port St. Lucie.

You might be thinking of Florida Hass. I believe that's the one with uneven ripening. Super Hass is apparently quite superb! (but I don't know from first hand experience).

Thanks. I was thinking about oro negro. Great avocado. Plus I have a neighbor with one - maybe he will let me take some bud wood.

Super hass is great but it does have ripening issues (didn't stop me from planting it though.)

That is Carlos's website about the various avocados he has tried to grow.

Some other things for you to consider is matching vigor, the Mexican types I've seen in FL are a bit slower than the West Indian types.
What season is Super Hass, last i remember it was in the Sept-October range.
Oro is Oct-Dec, and it is quite vigorous. If you want something before, Brogdon may be worth it (I don't know the vigor though)

If things don't work out with your neighbor you are welcome to as much Oro Negro budwood you want

Both!  "Fruitful Trees" (Paul N in WPB) chopped his Super-Hass tree down (from first-hand experience with uneven ripening).

I've planted Tonnage, Taylor, Oro Negro & Maria Black.  These are the best tasting avocadoes I've found for Florida.

Anyone happen to know what variety would have been sold in Florida grocery stores in past decades? They were large, green and smooth skinned. And delicious. Nowadays I mostly see the Mexican Haas.

There are so many different varieties of Florida grown Green Skin avocado that it is very hard to say which ones you are referring to.  The Florida avocado are under a federal marketing order.

The order dictates what avocado can be picked...start date and minimum size requirements by variety.

There are A dates (first date you can ship a variety) B, C and D dates.

The B & C dates lower the min size requirements and finally the D date lets you strip trees with no min size requirement.

There are like 50+ varieties although the industry is fazing out some and expanding on the amount of others.

When Florida runs low and finally out then Dominican grown avocado are imported.

The imports also have to abide by the marketing order....although the packaging requirements are less restrictive for the imports and the imports only have to grade #2 upon arrival.

So short answer is ....it could be any of a very long list

If you remember the month that you remember getting your favorite ones then I could narrow it down for you.

Interesting -- thanks for that. No I don't recall the specific times of year, but I need to get out and start looking at Publix, WD, Aldi and Sav A Lot to see what they offer.

Any idea if any of these have a slower or more compact growth habit to match the super hass?

Maria Black is supposed to be compact/dwarfish.  This is what sets it apart, along with the quality of the fruit.  "So they say." :)

I have super hass next to bacon avocado. The same age the same compact looking trees. Bacon is more dense than super hass. Both trees were last spring in 3gal, now in 15 gal. Super hass has at least 15 fruit hanging. Bacon did not set any.

Cool. For some reason I didn't htink Bacon grew/was productive in florida. I thought it was just a california/mexico avocado. Thanks

I have Lamb Haas and Semil 34 on the same tree, Semil is at least double the vigor on that tree (I keep having to chop it back to keep it under control). I recently grafted in Super Haas; I've been toying with the idea of putting Lamb, Super & Carmen on the same tree. That seems like my best bet for finding the Haas variety that does well in my yard, I'll just graft-out whichever variety doesn't do well.
