Need ID ->New Unknow Guava Discovered - Seedling??
« on: January 28, 2024, 04:23:44 PM »
I found a person who has an older guava tree that has some nice fruits, ripe ones range from 2"-4" (240 grams). I ate a few smaller fruits earlier in December and it tasted very good. When it is ripe, the flesh is softer, not the crunchy variety. It has a good smell when ripe, and one of the better tasting guava fruits I have tasted.

I went by the tree again and checked the fruits, it has some larger fruits so I got one large fruit (1/2 lb) and these were redish colored skin, like an apple. The fruit was even better than the first fruit I tasted, this one is a winner. Since it is large, there is a lot more flesh to eat.

So, if anyone can identify this variety that would be nice, I plan to graft it on my trees.

Here's photos of the fruit and branch I'm grafting.

I believe it is 胭脂红番石榴, carmine guava, one of the oldest variety out there.

it could be an old variety since the tree is pretty large and maybe 15 yrs old at least.
Do you have any photo of the carmine guava?

That is a nice looking guava. I am sure it would sell good in the market.

that is it, is the inside white like the fruit I show?
Also, the fruit flesh will be medium to soft, not hard like some of the Vietnamese white guava. It also has a real nice fragrance when it is ripe. For me, it may be the best tasting guava since you can eat it before it gets soft so it is firm like an apple or pear, but still has good flavor.

My Mexican cream fruits are good, but it is so small there is not much flesh to eat when you remove the seeds. Same with my Melon guava, the fruit smells good, taste good, but not a lot to eat after I remove the seeds.

I hope I can get more cuttings from the home owner and negotiate grafting some citrus or avocado for a trade to take cuttings from this tree after the fruits are done.

I don't have a picture of inside, maybe later this year.  I brought a grafted tree recently.  It still small I hope I can have one or two fruits this year.

Carmine is the main variety grown in the suburbs of Guangzhou.  Carmine guava, known as chicken feces fruit by local people, is bright red in color, has thick flesh, is crisp and tender, and is rich in nutrients. It is a fruit variety that is mainly eaten fresh and is very popular among the masses.  Also known as Datang guava, etc., it can be divided into four varieties: palace pink, full red, born red, and big leaf red, with palace pink and full red being the best.  The palace pink fruit is pear-shaped, medium-sized, with an average fruit weight of 82 grams. The flesh is smooth and sweet. Half of the ripe peel turns pink. It matures from mid-June to late July.  The whole red fruit is pear-shaped, medium-large, with an average fruit weight of 78 grams. The peel is medium-thick. When mature, the whole fruit is dark red and shiny. The flesh is thick and the flavor is medium. The fruit matures from mid-June to late July.  Both palace pink and full red are suitable for development.

This guava tree has some smaller fruit that is 50-100 grams that are turning color, but the one I show is 243 grams. The tree had a few more of these larger fruits with the same red color.

ok, I ate all the fruit of the larger Betty guava (unknnow seedling?).

It is not hard and crunchy so I like it. Medium firm flesh, sweetness is noticeable, much more than other varieties I have tasted. This one is a winner, one of my favorites now so I'm going to graft it to my larger tree. Fruit is the best tasting I had, better than Crystal, Mexican Cream or Melon guava.

Here's another photo today with my citrus fruits I picked. Of course, no way a guava will have more flavor than any of these citrus fruits, can't beat the taste of citrus fruits or loquat fruits.

Sure is, when I saw the tree with all the green fruits, I didn't think much of it except when I saw the red color start to show up. Then I noticed the larger fruits on the tree were red like an apples so it got my attention. Definitely will be grafting it on my trees and top working some of my in ground trees that I have other varieties grafted now.
