So I have an old mai1 jakfruit that was damaged years ago.  It has 4 trunks emerging from the base.  I think only one is the mai1 graft but I will know this summer as it has a fruit.  So I wondered if I could maybe veneer graft some new cultivars onto the undesired branches.  some of the branches are just a couple years old and were new growth after a freeze so the bark is not very thick.  Those would be the best candidates.  Anyone done this? In apple orchards they just cut off the branch and bark graft little scions onto the stump.. called "top working".

I have not done it but so long as healthy growth is coming out, you are in business.  If the branches are too large diameter to graft, you should be able to cut/tip them back and have new smaller growth emerge and then go a standard cleft/wedge.  I've also seen jack done with approach graft and Felipe posted a pic of a veneer graft of lakoocha onto jack so you should be able to do a veneer of jack onto jack?  Good luck and I believe there is less latex flowing in the cool of the morning.

I'bve never done it, but I don't see why it couldn't be done. What cultivars are you thinking of adding?

thanks, Ethan & Harry,

As far as what varieties,  wouldn't it be great to make a "cocktail" jakfruit.  I've only had 1 kind.  I bought a tiny J31 last Sunday as a future donor.  And if the one branch with the jackfruit is a good  Mai1, I could experiment by grafting some of those existing Mai1 scions onto the unwanted root stock branches just to see if I have any success.  I mean, Harry,  I'd love to try and graft your Black g. x Tabouey but you're quite a distance from me, I'm in Stuart.  I've been informed that grafts of jak need to be performed within minutes.  Bangkok lemon and some sort of red/orange cv. would be good.  richard wilson planted this tree right outside my bedroom window so I'd have a view of jakfruit and it worked.  here's a picture.  By the way, Harry, the photo of your tree that froze next to the B.G. x Tab. was educational, if not , shocking.

I suspect Jackfruit is not easy to graft.  The only jackfruit grafting I have seen in a local commercial nursery was approach grafting.  Veneer grafting is supposed to have a cambian to cambian surface exceeding 3.5 inches in length.  Good luck!

FYI, I have sent scions from jakfruit via USPS Priority 2-3 day delivery and it has been successfully grafted after 3 days in the mail. I haven't really had the time to do much mailing in recent days, but if you were to stop by, you'd be welcome to all the bud wood you would like.  It could be easily grafted after a drive of a couple of hours. Well, if you call jakfruit grafting easy.

Thanks all,  for the info and offer.  Very interesting facts.  I will keep it in mind...  Maybe I should practice first!

I grafted my BG after 8-9 days with a success rate 1 of 2 (50%)

Mike,

thanks for the info.  Not sure I understand exactly what you did.  Could you explain exactly what you did?  Which jak was the receiver and which was the donor....And what type of graft.  Photos?

Thanks,
Rusty

I approach grafted a Daeng suria to a Pet raa chaa but after some weeks the whole Daeng suria plant died. Maybe i didn't water it enough or something else happened.

I will try it again this year by approach graft because that works the best for me.

My BlackGold seedling was 2 years old. I got the scions from Oscar, 2 pieces of BG. They were 7 days on the way. The 8th or 9th day took place the graft. I used cleft crafting. I can post pictures of my tree later.
