I would remove the thing down to where the crack starts to seal up, cutting at a harsh angle so it sheds water. Ideally you would have done this pruning when dormant a few weeks / months ago. This is one of the very few times where I would be considering a sealant. Current arboriculture suggests against sealants these days, but this is a unique situation where it has a massive open wound that is letting water in. I would seal it up at the driest time of the year, if you're going to go with that.
That type of wound can kill the whole tree. There is no way around it, that is a really grave injury.
cut it back with sealant it very well would come back but not fruit for at least two years
Don't sugar coat it- I'd rather be reasonable about managing it- I can have someone go to prune it or maybe head up there myself soon
It also is so old it has started to spread via suckers- we will not lose the genetics of the tree but this giant guy is good for loads of fruit every year
