If I understand correctly, slowly prune down the split part of the tree until it is flush with the main trunk? any recs for how much to reduce over how long?

I would remove the thing down to where the crack starts to seal up, cutting at a harsh angle so it sheds water. Ideally you would have done this pruning when dormant a few weeks / months ago. This is one of the very few times where I would be considering a sealant. Current arboriculture suggests against sealants these days, but this is a unique situation where it has a massive open wound that is letting water in. I would seal it up at the driest time of the year, if you're going to go with that.

That type of wound can kill the whole tree. There is no way around it, that is a really grave injury.

cut it back with sealant it very well would come back but not fruit for at least two years

Don't sugar coat it- I'd rather be reasonable about managing it- I can have someone go to prune it or maybe head up there myself soon

It also is so old it has started to spread via suckers- we will not lose the genetics of the tree but this giant guy is good for loads of fruit every year

Ooooof that sucks! That is a really tough condition to fix. It's only going to get worse, but you're going to maim the tree badly removing that. I would probably have removed it years ago, had it been mine, and would consider taking it back bit by bit till you can get water out of the tree.

I was reading your post about keeping fruiting trees manageable and thinking about this tree K-Rimes haha-

100% vermiculite - it is by far the best starting spot- a small number of seeds will need modification, but this stuff works miracles

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Paw Paw (Asimina triloba) Help

Hey all,

Just got some Pics from the Paw Paw tree in Michigan and the Main Trunk has had a massive split- tree seems to be okay but I would think Pruning at this point would be prudent- would you take off the whole large limb? Maybe a good chance to get some grafts on?

Side note- if anyone wants fruiting paw paw wood (it is a seedling) near MI lmk

Lowkey not a fan of cherimoya even when perfectly picked ripe from CA
I like soursop a decent bit
Rollinia is probably my favorite if picked at right time (lemon custard) and not slimy
Sugar apple is ok
IDK not a fan of annonas that much

-also don't get annonas from the store, they got to be all picked off tree or something or else it's not a solid representation of what it tastes like

How could I forget Rollinia!

This one is a top tier fruit- maybe the best non-named variety

Ive tried a few of them

S. australe
S. smithiii
and a few unknown ones

In general they are good crisp and refreshing, like a light apple

been wanting to try some of the larger ones because the wild ones leave a lot to be desired as far as flesh amount and flesh to seed ratio

here we have arbutus unedo growing everywhere as hedging, some of the fruits taste delicious! Like fizzy peach mango! and others taste like sawdust....

Need to find the best-tasting one and clone it.  As far as I know cultivars for A. unedo are few and far between or hard to get, mostly Compacta seems the easiest to get, and some say it's the same variety as Elfin King.  So they're grown as hedging, mostly ornamentally, and some happen to be great fruits (according to posts like yours across the internet, mine hasn't fruited yet) and most stink, and yet still nobody really isolates the great-tasting ones and sells them.  Why?  What am I missing?  Even OneGreenWorld only sells Compacta.

they turn to mush in 24h so shipping will never happen- commercial cultivars are usually exactly that (commercial)

money make-a da world go round

some good trees in the bay area as well

JibrilEnterprise has many Senegalese species if not being based in Senegal

13
Everyone should have received a PM from me today- if you're comfortable with the situation please send payment for your seeds ASAP

Once the shipping is figured out we will split it evenly 10 ways (my count of the people on the order)

14
1. Golden Soursop
2. Lisa Atemoya
3. Pierce Cherimoya
4. Tree Ripened Cherimoya (store bought are so hit or miss)
5. Paw Paw
6. Soursop
7. Sugar Apple

They are all really really good though-

I had a soncoya that improperly ripened so I excluded it

15
Okay all-

Richard has collected and confirmed the availability of the seeds for this order, I will send PM's to request payment for your portion of the seeds and shipping/packing

So far it is

nofspeppers - 6 platonia
TFL777 - 10 platonia
JabbatheHut - 2 platonia, 1 pacouria
shot - 10 platonia
Jabo45 - 10 platonia
Rain - 5 platonia
purebluejapan - 10 platonia, 5 pacouria

Crush53 I will ask about adding 10 more Pacouria and PM you

Wow!

Nice LangsatFL- did you plant the trees 30 years ago or inherit them?

FWIW Flies can pollinate many things, although I am unsure of Langsat specifically

Please do a review of the fruits when/if you get to taste them

Im in contact with him about the other seed order- want me to ask?

21
two things with Inga-

the name ice cream bean does it a disservice, they are good but everyone expects it to taste like a bowl of bryers which it doesnt.

They are good when you find the right variety, they also get huge and are good chop and drop nitrogen fixers, they are mostly a novelty though and can be a bit fibrous as well

22
Just Reached out to Colombo to make sure everything is good with the order- if you are in keep an eye on this thread and watch out for a pm soon
