  This is Alan.  I met and had a good long talk with you at that exchange in Cerritos a couple months ago.  Anyway, I think this is a fantastic experiment you did with a great video too.  You went all out and found some really interesting results in just one year.  We really need to have more people try these experiments, even if on a much smaller scale than what you did, but document and share the results with everybody.  One of the many things I'm currently trying, and is somewhat the opposite of what you did--I'm trying to figure out which pawpaws grow/fruit the best in SoCal in zone 10b.  I hope you have great success in Hawaii too!

I have a number of white sapotes planted in what are called geopots.  I think these are higher quality than many of the others.  Anyway, they work for me in 30 gallon containers.  In terms of white sapote, the best way to handle them in a fabric container is to have an airlayered white sapote.  This will alleviate the typical problem of the long tap root that a white sapote has.  If you can't do airlayered, then pick white sapotes that are generally dwarf, smaller, in size.  For example, rainbow and suebelle work well in containers.

How do the ilamas (annona rosada) you are talking about compare to the red genova ilamas (annona diversifolia)?

  I'm also in the Long Beach area and growing a number of garcinias (6 of them).  Which ones are you growing, and how old are yours?

I had the exact same problem.  I discovered it right after the problem started and found the caterpillar causing the damage.  Not long after, the plant put out 10 leaves (5 pairs) all looking very good.
