Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold induced leaf drop in south Florida
« on: January 08, 2026, 03:42:52 AM »
I was surprised at the substantial leaf drop in my yard from the cold nights last week. The Guava, Caimito, Soursop were hit the worst and I'm hoping they do not take downturn later this month.

Has anyone else had the same issues?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Odd papaya
« on: December 23, 2025, 01:52:36 PM »
I don't know how these papaya are suddenly appearing but I figure birds are dropping seeds? So far six have sprouted, one female, a male which I used to pollinate the female then pulled it and a herm with one fruit.

Funny the only papaya nearby has LONG interesting slim banana shaped fruit  and these in my yard have round. Weird.

Anyway one seedling (about 5' tall) is odd. Every leaf has a dark purple stem and purple leaf veins like a person.

I've grown papaya a long time and never saw a banana fruit or one with purple stems, are these common?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I had my first white fleshed Guava
« on: August 20, 2025, 08:05:31 PM »
Yup, it was really good too. The outside was a pale yellow and green and about the size of an 8 ball, it was very aromatic, white flesh soft not firm or mushy, mildly sweet and a bit tart, not too many seeds and I ate the skin and all!

The problem is not one of my guava trees are labeled as a white variety. This one fell off of the tree with the nylon bag and I have no idea which tree was mis-labeled.

I got two trees labeled as Ruby Supreme (RS) at Home Depot or Lowes but I do have an unlabeled variety that I saved from the compost bin as it was dehydrated and near death and the manager said they only received RS this year and claimed that it MUST be a RS! The kicker is that the unlabeled tree has not had fruit on it yet and the other RS in in my front yard many feet from where I found the fruit on the deck.

So which was the culprit? The Barbie pink (BP)? the RS? or the Scarlet (S)? Unknown because all those with labeled varieties had fruit on them and I did not keep a count.

This presents two problems.

1. I liked the white Guava and have no idea what it actually is so I cannot get another one if I wanted it.
2. If it was the BP, or S I do not know which to replace! I'm hoping the other RS are correctly labeled!

Caveat emptor? :-)

Oh well one thing for sure, after getting a few that were labeled as "Mexican cream" years ago that were terrible tasting I'm now having to admit that a white guava can be edible! :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I mowed the grass
« on: August 14, 2025, 10:20:00 AM »
After 50 years of mowing with a heavy steel gas mower and my trusty Honda mower needed work, I bought a 20" 40v Ryobi mower since I had other Ryobi tools.

Gads no start string pulling, no gas, no fumes in the garage and  no horrible loud noise.

The 7Ah battery was only depleted 1/4 (small yard) and I'm sorry it took me so long to go electric.

Add to that if needed I can even charge the battery with my solar system. Anyone else gone electric?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My first Ruby Supreme
« on: August 13, 2025, 03:34:22 PM »

I've had a love hate relationship with Guava over the last 16 years or so and about 10 years ago I gave up... defeated by white fly, scale, mealy bugs and a general inability to keep Guava trees healthy. The exceptions were Strawberry and Lemon guava which have been surprisingly trouble free. Unfortunately a neighbor has a tasteless poorly kept unnamed guava variety which has suffered neglect over the years and it seems as if his tree's issues had contributed to my problems.

Anyway, a while back I decided to populate my patio with potted guava trees in order to maintain a close watch on, keep them pruned, watered and fertilized and at the first sign of anything unusual under or on a leaf I removed it.

Luckily the general lack of white fly, scale and mealy bugs locally and my bagging fruit early have contributed to the health of the fruit and trees and today I enjoyed the first of the fruits of my efforts.

The fruit was still green at picking at ~ 2-1/2" across and after a few days indoors to ripen and turn yellow the sweet aroma wafting through the house told me when to juice it. All I can day is wow! My love of Guava is as renewed as my efforts to have a continuing source of fruit!

I know not everyone appreciates the Guava or many other fruits for that matter, but I wonder if it's because they haven't tried a selected cultivar with proven traits?

Anyway, now I wait for the Scarlet, Barbie Pink and Variegated Guava fruits to mature.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Prevalent pests this year
« on: August 06, 2025, 08:30:14 AM »
The summer in south Florida is shaping up to be a relatively pest free growing season.

White Weevils are way down, and scale, mealy bugs, annona seed borers and white fly are non existent. I bag my fruits so I do not see fruit fly on my Guava.

Am I being fortunate or are others in So. Flo. seeing the lack of these pests?

PS, I do have an unknown (any help here would be appreciated) pest infecting only new growth on some of my guava trees. The new growth curls, turns brown and dies but I do not see anything causing the issue. I'm spraying new growth with all seasons horticultural oil and it seems to help?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Variegated guava leaf curl
« on: June 18, 2025, 09:19:20 AM »
I have nine guava trees of which eight are in nearly identical sized pots, all get the same water and fertilizer regimen and all but the in ground tree are in the same location on my rear patio.

Most of them are flowering and all are healthy in appearance except one, the variegated guava. It has leaf curl (convex or curling downward) and there's no sign of any pest infestation and it's growing robustly and has even set a half dozen fruit.

Here's the rub, just about every pic I see online of the variegated guava type has leaf curl identical to mine, so I "assume" that this particular type has naturally convex curling leaves? Are there any others who have confirmed this issue?

My little 4' variegated guava has recovered from the winter and subsequent transplant and has pushed two flowers and four more buds are on the same branch. When I got the plant it had one tiny fruit that disappeared from the branch, maybe stolen by an opportunistic squirrel? :-)

Many say to snip fruit from young trees but I never have in 18+ years and my trees have all done well so I'm hoping that it keeps at least one of the fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Old Mango not bearing fruit
« on: May 24, 2025, 08:38:50 AM »
I moved into Coral Springs south Florida some 18 years ago. My yard was barren save for a row of ficus bushes along my fence line which I removed. After removing them I planted several trees and my next door neighbor remarked how he hoped his mango seedling from a store bought fruit would bear soon.

Well it's been 18+ years and that tree has not produced a single fruit despite it being healthy albeit a bit overgrown but still rather small for its age at about 18 feet tall.

I read that some seedling fruit trees would never bear fruit but I never believed it till I came across this tree. Is this sterility thing a known issue with store bought mango seedlings?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The amazing Guava
« on: May 23, 2025, 10:22:08 AM »
I have a Ruby Supreme that's about 7' tall with a 1 1/2" diameter trunk that I have transplanted twice most recently into a large pot on my patio so it can get more light.

I did not prune the roots this last time or trim its canopy, I just  cut it out from the dirt, wrapped the rootball in burlap and planted it in the pot.

The leaves wilted for a week or so but as soon as it recovered from the wilting it pushed a flower which is now a fruitlet 1/2" wide.

That is amazing to me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Q's about potted trees
« on: May 06, 2025, 04:10:23 PM »
I have a few guava trees that now live in pots, I have never tried to grow trees much less fruit bearing varieties in containers so I have some questions about pot / container growing.

1. Should a dish for over flow water be used?
1a. If the answer to #1 is yes, if water does seep out from the bottom of the pot will the dryer potting soil wick up the water?

2. I have three pot types, clay / terracotta, ceramic over clay / terracotta (in various colors),  and heavy gauge plastic. All are at least 18-20" wide by the same depth and are on a sunny patio and trees generally have a 1/2" to 1" caliper.

I "think" I know about the finger in the medium test for water needs and the clay pots need watering the soonest (they're all doing well) while the white plastic pot needs water less frequently. Any advice on preference for one type of pot over the other?

After enjoying a batch of gnarly but DEElicious tomatoes recently I dug around in them for seeds and thought "what the heck, why not try growing them" and I planted the dozen or so seeds I was able to get from the seed stingy tomatoes I had. Gads, the 10 or so seeds I was able to get sprouted!

Now the questions...

Has anyone grown Heirlooms in south Florida?

If so, my yard is semi to mostly shaded with patches of full sun areas, which is best?

Container or in ground?

Planting / soil medium?

Any help would be appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / More vexing Guava issues
« on: April 23, 2025, 10:11:44 AM »
I am officially stumped.

Of my 8 guava trees (2 in ground) all are in ~10 gal. clay pots, in the same potting medium, get the same fertilizer and watering schedule are in close proximity to each other on my sunny patio so they get the same amount of sun.

That said, while all are thriving with new growth, the only one pushing more than one flower (10 as of today) I bought as an unnamed nearly dead stick a few months ago.

Afaik all were (according to their nursery labels) air layered and are of similar size and trunk caliper.

My fertilizer is Excalibur's 8-3-9 and and a finely grained "bloom booster" for fruit trees  at 3-9-4.

Maybe my fertilizers are wrong? But if so then why is one out performing the others by so much?

Any Ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / One sided Rollinia
« on: April 14, 2025, 07:02:42 PM »
Two Rollinia came ready for picking today.

I've been growing them long enough to know they do not ripen if picked green off the tree but today of two I picked one was yellow enough to pick but I found that the other side was STILL green.

I am bummed out thinking one of my long awaited fruits will not be edible. What are the chances this one can be salvaged? If so how to store it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is this insect?
« on: April 11, 2025, 10:57:15 AM »
This fellow (or gal) was on a Guava tree leaf. It's almost 1" across and it looks like a Papaya fruit fly but the legs seem too long and it's "stinger tail" too short? Some kind of mosquito?

Never mind, after a search I found out it's a harmless Crane Fly.

Should you wait until new growth hardens with bark? Or prune green shoots to encourage new branching?

My sweetheart lychee, Fairchild #2 canistel, and Rollinia are all poised for a banner year of production. Anyone else having similar luck?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Variegated seedling
« on: February 07, 2025, 02:24:18 PM »
I have a Julie seedling I call Juicy Lucy that is in ground for over 10 years. She's completely disease free and very productive, and the fruit inherited the Julie "nose" profile but it's a bit more colorful.

Over the years I've had many dozens of volunteer seedlings sprout near and beneath the tree and this year is no exception but of the current crop one is variegated. If it were all alone I'd say it was experiencing chlorosis but there are others fully green within a few inches of this one.

Opinions? Verdict?

My tree is about to collapse from the weight of the fruit and anyone in south Florida within reach of north Broward county is welcome to PM me and come take what you need.

No shipping, no way, no how sorry.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another banner year for Rollinia coming

Every year my Rollinia has produced just a few more fruits and this year is shaping up really nicely.

Is anyone's Rollinia looking good>

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another bust or banner year for Rollinia?
« on: December 29, 2024, 12:56:27 PM »
What are you folks who grow Rollinia seeing? Mine is doing well and as expected fruits are ranging from quarter size to the size of a hard baseball and more flowers erupting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Would you buy an unnamed fruit tree?
« on: November 13, 2024, 10:45:44 AM »
Yesterday I was in Lowes and they had an unusually nicely shaped guava (upward growth habit like a tree and not a bush) in a 5 gallon container at ~5' tall that had experienced and had fully recovered from a water deficiency but it had no cultivar or price stickers attached  to it.

Most of the other samples in stock were marked with price but not cultivar but were small in 1 gallon containers and $29. Since this one was the only fairly large one a manager priced it at $11 so I took it home. Sure it could be a dud like some of those I bought there marked "Mexican Cream" which were hard and bland but I figured I'd take a chance.

The question is, would any of you take a chance and buy a good sized and healthy fruit tree that is priced reasonably and not marked with the cultivar?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to safely clean grungy pots
« on: November 11, 2024, 06:41:12 PM »
I have two large clay pots (one with a guava in it the other empty) that have moss and algae on them and I want to completely clean them without leaving any chlorine or chemicals behind on the pots that could cause injury to the plant.

Without having to find a way to pressure clean them, does anyone have any ideas?
