Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit success stories in SoCal???
« on: May 03, 2023, 12:50:29 AM »
Hello fellow gardeners.  I  see some old threads on growing jackfruit in SoCal and it does look like there are some success stories.

Not a lot of new information on the forum here.  Any updated successes?  Is one variety having better success than others?  I know there were many members talking about this 5-10 years ago so there ought to Bree some good recommendations by now.

Many thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Favorite banana?
« on: March 17, 2023, 01:09:32 AM »
Sorry, if this is a repeat, but I didnít find the answer in the search.  Had a nice ice cream banana planted up on the back hill and a friendly gopher, decided I planted it just for him!  Gopher is gone now.

I think I will plant two different varieties now. I would like a variety that isnít one of the tallest, if possible.

Iíve really enjoyed the small bananas Iíve found in other countries that have a flavor different than traditional banana.  Sometimes seem like itís a mix with apple and berries.

Anyone have a favorite or two?  Iím in zone 10b, coastal San Diego.  Happy to purchase from the forum.

Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba Full Sun??
« on: March 12, 2023, 12:12:28 PM »
Hello fruit fans.  I have four jaboticaba plants in pots right now.  A couple are really starting to grow and surprisingly one has put on 12 to 18 inches of growth just this spring so far.

Iíd like to put them in the ground in their permanent locations but struggle with a spot in the yard where they can be shaded. I am in coastal San Diego, about a half mile from the water in zone 10b.

Iíve mostly seen these grown as an understory, with some sort of canopy above and mixed sun/shade. Iíve kept them under a patio with only direct morning light, but would like to have them in full sun in the yard.

I donít get the high temperature, blazing heat, that our inland growers recover.

Is there anyone here that has had luck growing their Jabos in full Sun?  I read on a Brazilian blog that they are full sun trees, but most of what I see here is them being grown in a shaded setting.

Iím hoping somebody has had luck in full sun along the coast here in Southern California.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Mango Tree Leaves
« on: April 28, 2013, 11:05:47 PM »
Hello everyone. Please help with thoughts on what to do with my Mango trees. I have two new trees (bought last summer and transplanted then into larger pots.) exhibiting the same problems. Both planted into a composted blend of cactus and citrus tree mix and fertilized with an organic fertilizer containing mycorrhizae. Location: San Diego, CA, about 4-5 miles from the coast. Against south facing fence line.

Strong new growth of leaves and even small flower bloom. Then the top leaves began to yellow a bit, wrinkle and some even curl/bend to one side or the other as seen in the pics. The leaves are not falling off, but no longer growing strong and thriving. Do not appear to be on progressing toward the look of the older, mature, green leaves below.

No visible signs of insects, other than the very occasional small ant. No whitening or other color. Some brown edges in a few places as can be seen.

Anyone seen this before? Please help and thanks in advance!
