Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The secret to growing a healthy Pitomba?
« on: October 10, 2023, 10:52:16 PM »
I've already kind of written off my 1 plant.  I don't have tons of experience with Eugenias like some of the people here do, but there is a lot of variation and environmental factors if grown outdoors with them.  Some thrive here in Southern California like Squamiflora and Uniflora, others like Pitomba and Arrabidae just don't look the best or decline in some cases. Some of the ones from Cerrado in Brazil, forget about it.  I like a challenge with some plants but I also don't like constant uphill battles.

Probably a rodent of some sort.  Lay out some traps.  Pill bugs suck too, they took out some of my tiniest seedlings at one point.  Kill them or probably repot it, they can hide in the soil and aren't helping your cause.  Maybe some chickenwire or a physical barrier around the plant will help?

Could be the humidity.  I am in the same area and have like a 10 inch one.  Grows glacially slow for me in a pot in a shaded area.

Whoa that tree looks great.  I would take you up on the offer as I have M. Halli but it is too small right now (wonder if anyone has tried a take on that?).

They are pretty easy in my experience. Definitely avoid full sun in the beginning though, mine are in part shade. Other than that I don't have problems with mine, they grow at a moderate pace for Eugenias compared to others. Mine started from seed  sometime last winter and the tallest one is close to a foot.  You probably want to bring in for the winter or protect it, I believe this one is frost sensitive.

I have some Plinia sp "Ană de Diamantina" sprouts for sale.  Got these from Luiz and selling for same price he sold to me $5 at pop.

Also have 1 Canistel seed, germinated and just starting to sprout - $5

For free because I need room and don't have much space currently (and because I appreciate this community):

"Regina" surinam cherry - 2 available - few inches tall, 3 sets of leaves

"Camino Laguna" guava - 4 available - very small maybe 1 inch or so

Stenocereus Pruinosus "Gray ghost organ pipe" cactus - several, all with some spines but they are very small, approximately 4 months old.

Local pickup only, sorry personal life too busy to mess with shipping anything right now.

Doesn't hurt to check out some of the Asian markets either.  I found some Manila at Mitsuwa but that was back in Spring, you don't really see those at the common chains.  H Mart might have something different too but I'm down south and don't make it to either too often.

I recall someone here mentioning a Indian market somewhere that carried some varieties of Indian mangoes but never been and don't know the name.

Everything I have is in pots for now but I also only started a year and a half ago.  I do plan on putting some of the bigger species in ground at a relative's property as it will be hard to keep them in pots indefinitely, mainly my Pouteria and Ingas.  Basically everything else I have is pretty manageable in a pot, dragonfruit and various cacti, myrtacea family e.g Psidiums, Plinias, Eugenias, Myrcianthes etc as they are all tending to be smaller trees.  My garcinias stay in pots for now too because they are really slow growing like a lot of Plinias.  The only thing annoying about this is playing musical chairs when I have to up the pot size but it also allows me to refresh the soil medium and give the plants a fresh start.

I save my pumice for cacti.  Perlite for everything else for me as I am cheap where I can be.

Here is pics from today:

The main vine near the soil has gotten pretty thick and woody:

Trust me I have no skill unless you count surfing this forum for a year and googling the species for 5 minutes.  I just make sure it is moist throughout summer, helps that I don't pick up the fallen leaves and just leave them on top of the soil to lock it in.  A good misting on the leaves on hot days to keep up humidity and a little hollytone once in a blue moon when I remember.  Stays in in full sun year round.  I don't really recommend this species here as it is somewhat slow and stumbles through winter.  That being said alive for now now and thriving to a certain degree.  Once I get it to a fruiting stage (if it isn't self sterile, seems like we don't know) or the point where I can let go of some cuttings I will come back here and let you all know.

87
Define luck? Lol.  I can post another picture of mine later on, I don't really have a recent one.  It picked up some growth during summer but not a whole lot, probably nowhere near what you had going on there in Florida but we also rarely peak above mid 90's here on the coast.  I am convinced it would definitely do better somewhere that has consistent warmth/humidity throughout the year.  That being said mine is alive and fine for now, but with winter approaching I imagine it will look ragged coming out of it once again.  The only good thing I know to come out of it is it can handle like 36F in our cold snaps and be fine.  Fingers crossed that it flowers before the end of its lifespan.  ;D

My Honduran Moon Torch(S. Hondurensis) is about to flower.  Really strange because I rooted back in January I think.  Seems more dwarfish than the other DF types and clearly can flower a lot quicker.  A little bit strange that it is late in the season too but whatever.  The flowers are actually heavy enough that it made the main stem keel over.

If you ever get to try cherapu, then you'll create an obsession to get those seeds.  those maybe 40% germination is good.

Wasn't suggesting they were Frankies just thought I would add my experience with them.  Would love to try some Cherapu or anything really, unfortunately in San Diego the only Garcinia I have ever seen is mangosteens from Mexico.  You guys are blessed with your options out there, I only got a small taste of what is available and I was hooked!

91
I actually got lucky when visiting Frankies nursery and bought some forbessii fruits late january.  I have nothing compare them to since the only other garcinia I have tried was mangosteen.  Pretty good, like a quite sour small mangosteen.  Maybe even too sour for some people, but I didn't mind at all. Took the seeds home with me and nothing came from it.  Good luck to anyone that grabs them.

92
It is supposedly a top tier cactus fruit.  They don't have a long shelf life and are more delicate is probably why it is expensive.  Also unless the cacti is huge they don't seem to produce a whole lot in comparison to say dragonfruit, you need many to have a decent harvest.  The growth rate of them is quite a bit slower than other cacti as well. S. queretaroensis and S. Stellatus seem to the more popular ones of the genus for commercial growth (and probably taste wise).

93
Whoa those look hefty Kevin.  Very cool!

94
I think the heat mats work well with Psidiums and speeds up the process a bit.  I have been using mine for cacti also and it really speeds up things as well as they need consistent warm/hot temperature, highly recommend for cacti in general.  My results with Sapotacaea and Garcinia are mixed results so I think it just depends.  You can always play around with different methods if you have plenty of seeds e.g. heatmat, moist vermiculite in a bag, small container in greenhouse etc and see what works best.

95
Has anybody got Psidium ubatubensis to pop up? I stirred up the soil on mine after a few months and the seeds look swollen but nothing emerging. It seems like once you venture out beyond regular guava and cattley guava, other species in genus tend to have lower germination rate or longer germination times.

A live plant would be pretty rare.  Bellamy had seeds maybe 6 months ago, I hear the germination rate is kind of low on this one.  Good luck with your search.

97
Getting a lot more growth out of my little guys.  Hoping it stays sunny for them.  8)

Stenocereus Thurberi seedlings approx 4 months old:

Stenocereus Chacalapensis:

Eulychnia Acida.  This one is finnicky to me for some reason.

Stenocereus Thurberi var. Littoralis the Dwarf Organpipe Cactus.  I got this one recently unrooted so hopefully no issues with it developing.

Also my Honduran Moontorch is showing some hairy looking buds but I don't have a pic of it.  Kind of weird though because I only rooted it over the winter, I am thinking maybe because it seems more dwarfish than regular dragonfruit species.

Exotica is nice but a bit chaotic and unorganized.  Atemoya Nursery in Vista is nearby, pretty good also and good prices although probably better to call them ahead.  Ong's is pretty good too and more central SD but pricey like someone mentioned and only open weekends.  At Ong's the plants I saw were more mature in general.

I have mostly the same experience, I think maybe only 1 of mine hasn't popped up yet.  I can't remember what I used probably some peat moss, coco noir, a bit of perlite and some other stuff. Pretty quick for Garcinia.  No tropical conditions unless you count Hilary  ;D

I'm up on the coast and not too worried for our area.  It's the valleys, inland/mountain areas and desert areas that are more a risk.  Wish you all the best and hey at least we don't have to water this weekend.  :)
