Done

To those who will be trying this, good luck and hope in a few years you are talking about the fruit.

Had a Hog Plum tree knocked over by wind (fringe of Ian) and I am stumping it (will try to upright the stump to see if it survives.)

I have lots of cuttings for anyone who want some.  It is free but you have to come get it or pay for shipping.
I understand thick cutting an inch or more across work best so I am making a few of those but if you tell me what you want (up to 2 or 3 inch thickness) I may be able to save you some before these end up by the roadside enroute to the dump.

US addresses only please - cant do international shipping with these.  No one will be happy.

What are the characteristics or identifying traits of a butterscotch sapodilla?

... and if the fruit is the only tell, what does that look like and how does it differ from other large sapodillas?

Can I start annona seeds in Florida in early summer without a humidity dome?
Also, in your experience must I start them under shade?

I ask because some of my successful seeds starts were from seeds I had given up because they seemed to fail to germinate and stopped caring for.  I later found that unprotected and on their own, they had sprouted, competed with weeds in the pot and were holding on.

Will a humidity dome improve my chances? or is it best only in our dry season?

I am putting out shade cloth today but don't want to adversely impact some of my germinating seeds which are pushing without shade but are about ready to be hit by our summer sunshine (without the the daily rain yet)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can you please help identify this plant
« on: May 22, 2022, 10:14:58 AM »
Can anyone tell from these pictures what this plant might be?
The leaf damage is from hail that we got a week or so ago.

31
The last two days have been terrible for my already poor mango season.

Yesterday we had hail stones and moderate winds, dropped a few fruits.  Not too bad.
Today heavy rain with vicious winds, somewhat localized, broke a branch of my Choc Anon loaded with fruits.  So a poor year even poorer.

I will take the rain though it has been dry the last several months.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Separate and transplant soursop seedling
« on: April 21, 2022, 08:47:33 PM »
I planted several seeds in the same pot and many (abut 10) germinated and grew past the dreaded 6 inch (dreaded for me because at about that height I tend to lose many annona seedlings to wilt or rabbits).
I could pull some leaving two plants in the pot but I would like to retain as many as I can.  Is there a good age for separating soursop seedlings?  I will need to repot soon anyway but separating will disturb the roots much more.

All input appreciated.

I started several seeds of cherimoya, custard apple, sugar apple and atemoyas, plus some mystery annonas seeds from past seasons.  I wasn't expecting much and planned on using them for rootstock.
One plant pushed well and really looked good so I set it aside.  Today it was the victim of kids playing and was snapped in two.  I will try to nurse the stump but wondered if anyone can suggest what this might be from the leaf which is unusual and unlike any of the others that germinated.

Some extra info
The seedling held leafs through our winter, but that may be because it's in a pot close to the house and was brought indoors for the coldest nights
It was about 18 inches tall when it met it's Waterloo at the hands of a errant volleyball.
The leaves are deep green and roundened.
No felt on the underside but soft and smooth to the touch on the upper side.

All suggestions welcomed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona seed borer in Cherilata
« on: February 09, 2022, 05:19:59 PM »
Do any of you have experience of annona seed borer in Cherilata fruit?

I have some fruit on a grafted branch that have the telltale holes (adult emergence holes).
I had not bagged the fruit (wish now that I had), and I see the holes in 3 of 5 fruit.

If any of you have the experience, is there some way of discouraging this pest from staying in my yard?  Or do I have to bag my annonas from this point on?

Citrus General Discussion / How to bring a neglected citrus tree back
« on: December 18, 2021, 03:43:01 PM »
I had several citrus trees and ended up losing some of them over the years.  I am left with 3 trees that have survived just about everything from hurricane and mild freeze (a couple of hors at least twice in their lifetime of about 10 years) to sheer neglect (little or no fertilizer or pesticide); I wasn't going for organic, just expected they would be affected by citrus greening or some disease and have to be removed.  Well, they haven't.  They are not special varieties, just whatever I got from homedepot and planted at the time.

I am motivated to rejuvenate these tress and wondered if there was a care regime, nutrition watering pruning etc. for citrus that I should use as a guide.  My decision came after a visit from IFAS researcher who was sampling for bugs in the neighborhood and informed me they were healthy, just poorly cared for.  Needed some fertilizer and pruning to remove deadwood and some bad branches growing straight up.  They make fruits now but I believe will make more and better fruit with a little TLC.

I will appreciate any input.

My best guess on the varieties in case it matters, Hamlin, Navel and HoneyBell.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Osteen Mango - as a late variety
« on: September 05, 2021, 01:42:05 PM »
I have an Osten that fruited for the first time this year, held on to about 6 (into the last week of August) of which I got 3 and the critters got the rest.
I enjoyed the fruit, we had the last one today, and I wondered if any of you have experience with Osteen and would like to share your thoughts.  Do you notice any aftertaste?

For me it is one of my late season collections and this year only Beverly and Keitt held fruit longer.

I will like to read your thoughts on this variety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherilata Fruit Pictures - please
« on: August 31, 2021, 12:33:01 PM »
I am interested in seeing what a Cherilata fruit looks like from just formed to ready to pick.
If you have pictures could you kindly share or point me to a link.  I have a couple of Cherilata plants that seem to be doing well (on pond apple rootstock) and I want to know what the fruit looks like.

I have several flowers and one fruit from a previous flowering.

I will post a picture later.

I was in the yard and saw one of the pond apple (Annona glabra) trees is dropping fruits.
I will be glad to throw a fruit in a zip lock bag and ship it to you.  I don't expect you to eat the fruit, but you will get a bunch of seeds to plant or do whatever you need to with.

I can sell you seeds (it will cost since it takes time to process) or give you the fruit and you take care of getting the seeds yourself.

Shipping should be about $8 for priority small box.

If you are interested, please make sure fruits can be sent to your location first.  PM me with your address and we can work out the details.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling fruit - will taste soon
« on: June 22, 2021, 08:09:51 AM »
I finally have fruit from a mono seedling tree.  I am not sure of the source tree, it was a volunteer, but was most likely a Haden.
I had grafted to other branches on this seedling and harvested Venus from the grafted side earlier this month.

The fruit is relatively large.  I couldn't risk the critters getting this as it is the only one this year.  It has started coloring up with full shoulders and should finish ripening on the counter.

One last thing, the tree is growing in an area that gets and stays wet about a month each year.  Mango seem to be able to deal with wet conditions once established.

Here are some pictures

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit - laying down on the job
« on: June 12, 2021, 09:46:22 AM »
A have a seedling Jackfruit fruiting after several years in the ground.  There is only one problem, the fruit is on the ground and is touching the soil under the tree.  What do I need to do to give this fruit a good chance of reaching maturity.  I have seen pictures of jackfruits close to the ground and I am sure mine is not the first that is actually on the ground, what (if anything) do you do to protect the fruit in such cases?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID these mangos
« on: May 13, 2021, 10:28:07 AM »
A couple of years ago these mangos were grafted but improperly or not labelled.
They made fruit for the first time this year and my fried has asked if I could help identify them.
I am asking the more experienced folks on the forum to help with this ID.

Variety # 2 ________________________________

I took out the third variety which there appears to be agreement on.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Agitator kit for backpack sprayer
« on: January 05, 2021, 12:33:18 PM »
I have a relatively inexpensive backpack sprayer that I use fairly often. I can not use it for items that require constant agitation to keep the product in suspension (such as sulphur).
I was wondering if anyone made an after market kit that I can attach to my sprayer.  Perhaps that runs on a battery.  It is extra weight but I can fill the tank to the 3 or 4 gal mark when the kit is connected.

Yes, I saw the post about the "Country Way 15 Gallon Spot Sprayer w/1 GPM Everflo Pump"  This looks like a viable second option but I will have to drive it around the yard instead of slinging in on my back.  I may look in to this some more if the option of a kit does not pan out.

I got some seeds from a forum colleague, thanks for the seed.

I planted them and committed the cardinal sin, I I didn't use indelible ink on my label.  Well I have a number of seedlings of both and don't know which is which.  I want to select one or two of each to plant but would not be happy to end up with four of a kind in stead of two of each.

Can anyone tell, is there a way to distinguish between torta ssp. glabra and Abiu seedlings?

I can post image if necessary but they look almost identical to me.

This pair were moved indoors to spare them some cold temps.  The rest were left outdoors.  Please refer to these as A (left and right or 1 and 2 - your choice)

Call these two B, again left and right or 1 and 2

Call these C

and this last one which I moved to a slightly larger pot, D

By the way, the paint on the inside of some of the pots is homemade spinout for root pruning.

My first Lisa Atemoya has been on the tree for a while and sugar apples that set fruit at the same time are being picked.  How can I tell when the Lisa is ready to pick?

Is there a subtle change of color?
Does it get soft to the touch?

Will appreciate your input
