These were fertilized on or about June 18th





These on or about July 7th

I think it is time to take the first batch.  It has been 40 days and they look ready.  I will appreciate any suggestions on making the call.  Also, if you can tell from the fruit what it is I will very much appreciate knowing.  The first 2 pictures are the same fruit, it is easily 7 cm in diameter, maybe even more and has this really nice pink color to the fruit.

We have to fix this.  I am out of the country but should be back in a week or so.  I know it has been raining a lot and don't know what shape my fruits are but they have to be better than anything you will bet at a Publix or Safeway.

I would still recommend you buy and eat a few mangos.  Something may appeal to you and then knowing it can even be better is just a plus.
Remember that preference in taste is personal and some on this forum will swear by Carrie and others will pass on it.  Talk to the seller, Squam256 for example will talk to folks who stop by, about mangos and he or anyone at Zill's may be able to tell you how the variety you are tasting has fared this year.

There was a seller on ebay, from Ocala FL I believe who sold tissue cultured starters of Sugar Loaf, White Jade and something else.
I have not seen the post of late but I am sure someone on the forum knows and possibly bought some from this guy.

I got bud-wood from Carlos back in 2004 and grafted on to a Lula stump I was top-working.
It has been slow but is holding fruit this year.  It had flowered last year but dropped the few fruits it made.  So 5 years to first real crop.
I am not a commercial grower and could be happy with a small crop of good 'cado.
I have what I believe is a Monroe too but it has been stressed by wind and water each of the last two years.  Tipped first one way and then the other.  I am sure it lost a lot of roots with each fall.  I propped it up and it appears it will live.  Will see.

Carlos (CTMiami)  in Homestead does a lot of work with Avocados and is a good resource if he sees this or if you can find him.
I believe he has a website where he reviews and documents observations about different 'cado varieties.

Simon, nice work.

It was my understanding that complete pollination results in high seed count and that a single dab with your brush results in the better fruit.
Since reduce seed count is one of your objectives can you do a normal pollination and bag one or two flowers as a control?
The goal being to see if the seed count can be discounted if you get a hit on your other metrics.

My opinions are from reviewing literature, I have never tried to create a new veriety but am following your work with great interest.  Hopeful you will develop a chirimoya tasting atemoya that fruits in Florida 😀

Bag it after you have hand pollinated.
I recall reading somewhere that people trying to develop new cultivars bag to avoid pollination by random varieties.
In your case you just need it dry.

A forum member, Simon, undertook a study with double stone grafts in California.  Posted a lot of good info.  I believe his experience in CA was that the plant tried to flower and fruit way to young due to conditions in CA.  I am sure you can find the post if you search for "double stone" on the forum.

Per the table it looks like it is not.  Flying fox says he has the combo and it works.
Perhaps if you graft and it works you can update this table.  Or Gozp or Flying fox can.

I think my choc anon is ready to pic.  It has not yellowed yet but my guests, birds, squirrels rabbit and raccoons have started taking their share.
What they leave behind yellows nicely in a day on the ground and is nicely colored on the inside.

Should I pick the fruit green for the best taste or let yellow on the plant?

I looked at my dragon fruits and saw some really small flower buds forming.
Lots of them.
I should be happy but I have a trip coming up in about a week or so and I will be gone for another week or two.
I looked up the old posting and it appears like from an inch long bud to open flowers is about 2 weeks.  I assume that from bud to open flowers will be between 2 and 3 weeks.  Is this correct?
Any chance it will take longer? up to 4 weeks?  or should I be looking for a friend who will help pollinate while I am away.

Need some help and information.
I am in Florida and it has been particularly rainy.
Last time I applied copper int he evening it rained during the night and all day the next day.  I did not know if I should have reapplied immediately, kept my schedule or reapply but after a week or so.

What is your strategy for fungicide application when it rains every day?

My Brewster and Mauritius lychee didn't do too well this year, I had to beat he birds and picked most a little early.  I live close to an orchard and have bought pounds of lychee this year the the taste has improved as has the season.  Last batch a week ago was perfectly ripe and spectacular.
My emperor is only now beginning to ripen.  I took a few today but it was still too tart.  The taste was not great but I hope it will improve with time.  This tree usually makes tasting fruit, I hope it isn't washed out.

Update on my graft (Scions from Raul)

I grafted 3

1 died early and has been cut off the plant.

The other is brown on the top by green about 3 inches from the union down.  I have left it on but assume it too will likely not survive.  I hold out hope because it is green past a set of nodes.  The top is dead though.  The root stock pushed new growth from just below the graft.
You might be able to see the graft behind the new growth in this picture.



The third did well and took.  The first leaves were tiny, the second flush a little more reasonably sized.
The grafts were on branches of the same G Intermedia.

BBS - I assume this can be transmitted through budwood / grafting.
Is there something that can be done if you are not sure if your scions are from infected trees?
Is there a best practice that will reduce the chances of passing disease along?
I want to increase my collection but don't want to introduce disease.

Big picture here, are there things as a community we should all be doing.

Thanks, I did look up Leprosis and it was the closest to what I observed.
I wanted a second opinion because Leprosis apparently no longer is present int he US.  I live in Florida and in the last 5 to 6 months some extension staff from USDA I believe have been doing some kind of citrus study to protect Florida Citrus came by the house and added the trees to survey of sorts.  They left a flyer to contact them which I promptly set aside now I wish I had kept it because if this is Leprosis I need to notify someone quickly.

Is anyone else in Florida aware of or part of this study?  Or who I can reach out to regarding notification and confirmation?

Just want to do the right thing.

First I cant confirm this is a disease but I had never seen it on my trees and it seems to have occurred after a severely vet period.
It look like a tan blotch wrapped around the stem and branches.



Should I be treating this?  What is it?

Done, thanks.  They munch fast too.
They had finished the one leaf and were moving on to others when I picked them off.
I assume there are others and will have to watch closely.

Perhaps it is time to spray.
